JAMMU, May 9: Hundreds of people from several villages in Dansal Tehsil blocked Domail-Kishenpur road to lodge their protest against Revenue Department for non-payment of land compensation to the farmers whose land was acquired for construction of Sangar-Jandrah road link about eight years ago.
The villagers also lodged their resentment against the failure of Revenue Department to demarcate land identified for setting up of Government Degree College (GDC) Jandrah which was announced in 2011.
Raising slogans against the Revenue Department, the protestors laid a blockade at village Jandrah and criticised the Department for its indifferent attitude towards the problems being faced by the farmers due to non-payment of compensation in lieu of land acquired from them for construction of Sangar-Jandrah road link.
“More than eight years have passed since the administration had acquired land from farmers for the construction of road. The Revenue Department officials did not pay any heed to the repeated requests of the farmers, subjecting them to great hardships,” the protestors alleged.
They also took on the revenue department for its failure to demarcate 90 kanals of land identified for GDC Jandrah in the last five years and alleged that it had severely affected the functioning of the college which is being run from Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Jandrah.
The protestors vociferously raised the issue of ‘abandoned work’ on vital Sangar bridge, being constructed on river Tawi to connect Sangar with Jandrah and other villages.
Later, Naib Tehsildar Jhajjar Kotli rushed to the spot and sought week’s time to address the genuine issues of the people.
The protestors warned that they would resume their strike if their issues were not settled within a week.
