JAMMU, Aug 17: The irate residents of Durga Nagar and surrounding areas held a protest demonstration by squatting on Jammu-Bantalab road with the dead body of a lady  who was knocked down at Gulshan Ground, Police Lines yesterday evening demanding registration of  FIR against the culprit who happens to be the kin of a senior superintendent of police.
The protestors raising slogans against the police and district administration alleged that police was trying to hush up the case as the daughter of the senior police officer was driving the car which knocked down Lalita Raina wife of Bushan Lal Raina.
The traffic on the busy Jammu -Bantalab road remained disrupted for six hours and no vehicle was allowed to move on the road as the protestors squatted on the road along the dead body and did not agree to lift the blockade till an assurance came from a senior officer in the administration that the matter will be fully investigated and the guilty punished under law.
The protestors while accusing the police of hushing up the case said that the police has failed to register the FIR against the culprit.
Earlier SP South, Rajeweshwar Singh visited the venue of the protest along with other police officers but his pleas to lift the road blockade were turned down by the agitating people. It was followed by the visit of SSP Jammu Prabhat Singh who assured that action will be taken against the culprit responsible for knocking down the lady. But the protestors were not satisfied with his assurances also as they continued to press that the assurance should come either from Divisional Commissioner or Deputy Commissioner Jammu otherwise they will keep the dead body on road till justice is given to the family.
Later Deputy Commissioner Jammu Sanjeev Verma visited the dharna site and assured that no leniency will be shown to any one how influential he may be. He further assured the protestors that he will himself look into the matter and justice will be given to the family.
On his assurance the blockade was lifted and the dead body was taken for cremation by her relatives.
