JAMMU, July 4: PDD Casual Labourers/Need Based Workers’ Union today staged a sit-in protest in front of PDD Division- II Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, demanding their pending wages.
A large number of casual labourers as well as need based workers joined the protest and raised slogans against the Government and PDD authorities for not releasing their wages.
While addressing the protesting workers, president of the union, Akhil Sharma, expressed grave anguish over withholding of wages of casual labourers and need based workers by the department. He said though, the need based workers and casual labourers posted in stores and workshops have been their wages but those performing their duties in the field have been deprived of their wages for months together.
“Due to non-payment of their wages, these PDD casual labourers and need based workers and their families are on the verge of starvation”, Sharma alleged and demanded that their wages be cleared without any delay.
He said till the wages of the need based workers and casual labourers are released, the workers will continue their strike. Sharma further said that the department should ensure life insurance of all casual labourers/need based workers, as it has usually been seen that the workers while working on electric poles have suffered electric shocks and died untimely. He said that the life insurance will be the only alternative for such victims to sustain their families.
