PCB seizes 600 kg banned polythene from Narwal Sabzi Mandi

JAMMU, June 11: J&K Pollution Control Board conducted an early morning anti-polythene raid today and seized 600 kg of banned polythene carry bags from various shops of Narwal Sabzi Mandi.
The raid was conducted by a team of PCB officials comprising Arshad Nazir Malik, Divisional Officer, PCB Jammu-North, Chander Singh Kotwal, JEE, Naveed Chowdhary, FI, Dimple Sharma, FI along with officers of the of the Department of Horticulture, Planning and Marketing, Jammu.
Following a tip off the illegal polythene (below 50 microns in size) is being sold and traded at Narwal Sabzi Mandi, PCB officials teamed up with the officials of Horticulture Department to crack down on the traders and vendors of illegal polythene during the wee hours when most of the trading takes place.
The drive was conducted on the directions of Chairman JKPCB, Suresh Chugh and under the supervision of Member Secretary J&K PCB, BM Sharma and Regional Director Jammu, Dr Syed Nadeem Hussain.
A spokesperson of PCB said that matter will be further taken up with Director, Horticulture, Planning and Marketing for getting the shops of erring traders deregistered and their lease deed cancelled for selling the banned products in complete violation of law and adding to the menace of plastic pollution. He further added that confiscation proceedings shall be initiated in the matter soon.
Chairman, J&K PCB made a fervent appeal to all the traders, shopkeepers and users to avoid storage, sale and use of banned polythene (below 50 microns) as well as single use disposable cutlery items made of non-biodegradable material. He assured strict punitive action under law against all violators.
