JAMMU, Apr 22: A deputation of All J&K Passengers’ Welfare Association under the leadership of its president RC Sharma along with Gajjan Singh and Raj Gopal Sharma met the Transport Minister, Abdul Ghani Kohli and presented a memorandum of demands and problems being faced by the passengers in their journey.
Briefing the Minister, the president demanded convening of a high level meeting to discuss, deliberate and resolve the problems of passengers.
The memorandum stressed on slashing down of the existing passengers’ fare in the State in view of the considerable reduction in fuel prices which is the burning demand of the people.
The Association representatives in their memorandum alleged that people are being looted by transporters in broad day light. It added that several times drivers and conductors misbehaved with the innocent passengers including senior citizens, women and students.
The Association also demanded that there should be age limit for drivers as well as passenger vehicles and it should be fixed 28 years minimum. The memorandum stresses for registration of drivers and conductors route-wise; 50% concession in existing fare to those passengers, who travel standing; provision of First Aid box in every passengers’ vehicle; proper procedure should be adopted for issuing fitness certificate to the passengers vehicles besides conducting physical verification of the concerned vehicle; all the passengers should be insured at the cost of transporters; students concession should be ensured round the clock and all days including holidays; Passengers Complain Cell should be created at every district head; installation of GPS and CCTV in all passengers vehicles; proper utilization of passenger welfare fund; the stoppage should be fixed to avoid jams and inconvenience; banning of music players in loud voice; to avoid unnecessary delay by the passengers vehicles on their respective routes and display of names of drivers and conductors, who are operating the vehicle.
Besides while operating the passengers vehicles drivers and conductors should be in proper uniform and complaint box should be fixed in every passenger vehicles.
The Minister gave a patient hearing and assured deputation redressal of all demands and problems of the passengers, besides promised to convene a high level meeting immediately of the Transport Secretary, Traffic Police, transporters and representatives of All J&K Passengers’ Welfare Association.
