Srinagar, June 28: Pashmina weavers today staged a protest asking the administration to take steps to revive and save the industry which is on the verge of extinction.
A group of such weavers—who are weaving the fabric by hand—appeared in the Press Enclave and raised slogans in favour of their demands.
They said that the introduction of the power looms in the industry was destroying the quality of the fabric and at the same time was telling upon their livelihood.
The weavers under the banner of Kashmir Pashmina Handmade Weavers Union said that as the industry is on the verge of collapse, the work carried out by the power looms and spinning mills was akin to rubbing salt on their wounds.
“We appeal the administration to ban the power looms and spinning mills for the betterment of the workforce involved in the sector,” Bilal Ahmad Khan, Vice President of the Union demanded.

He also said that the Government should take steps for the implementation of the Handloom Protection Act-1985 in the Union Territory which would pave a way for the safeguard of the weavers associated with the sector.
“Along with the implementation of the Act, we seek an immediate cancellation of registrations of the power looms and spinning mills with immediate effect,” the protestors demanded.
