Parts of Dal Lake, ‘nallahs’ freeze in Srinagar

SRINAGAR :  Parts of the world famous Dal Lake, ‘nallahs’ and other water bodies were partially frozen here, where the mercury dropped further and settled at minus 4.4 degree Celsius, coldest of the winter so far.    Elsewhere, in the region Leh, Kargil, Pahalgam and Gulmarg also recorded coldest night of the season.    As compared to last week, the day was chilly, dry and such condition would conditions would continue for the next 24 hours.
However, Western Disturbance (WD), originating from Arabian sea will enter the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan on December 13, which could remain active for some  time.
This could result in an improvement in the night temperature but the maximum temperature will drop.    Parts of the famed Dal Lake and other water bodies were partially frozen near banks due to below freezing  temperature.
The minimum temperature dropped to minus 4.4 degree, 3.4 degree below normal, which was also coldest of the winter so  far.
Dew on roof tops also was also frozen. Earlier coldest was minus 3.5 degree recorded yesterday.    However, the ice started melting as the day progressed. But in the  interior parts of the Lake, remained frozen.    Water level in river Lidder and other water bodies has dropped considerably after the mercury dropped to minus 6.3 degree, which was more than two notches below normal.    The famed ski resort of Gulmarg, which still awaits heavy snowfall to attract skiers and other adventure lovers, also recorded coldest night of the season due to clear sky and dry weather.
Met spokesperson said the minimum temperature was minus 5.5 degree, which was one-and-a-half notch below normal. Earlier the coldest was minus 5 degree, recorded yesterday.    Kupwara also witnessed coldest night when the mercury dropped to minus 4.2 degree, more than three degree below normal. Water bodies and water pipes were frozen in most parts of the district, particularly, near the Line of Control (LoC).
Qazigund and Kokernag in south Kashmir also witnessed below normal minimum temperature.
In Leh and Kargil people continued to freeze as there was further drop in the temperature.
Against yesterday’s minus 13 degree, it was minus 14.4 degree, while at Kargil the minimum temperature was minus 13.8 degree against yesterdays minus 11.6 degree. (AGENCIES)
