NEW DELHI:
In the wake of terror strikes in France and Peshawar, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon today favoured firm and committed action by the international community against the menace to terror.
The issue of terror attacks in France and Peshawar came up when Ban met President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhawan here.
The Secretary General said huge solidarity was expressed by the world after the incident in Paris but “committed action is even more important”.
He was responding when Mukherjee said “The international community must assert itself and tackle the problem of terrorism.” He asked Ban Ki-Moon to take initiative in this regard.
Noting that “terrorism was no longer a debating issue”, the President said, “Terrorists engage in wanton destruction and show no respect for borders or values.”
The Secretary General “agreed that the international community should take firm action on the matter of terrorism,” according to a statement issued by the Rashtrapati Bhawan.
Three gunmen killed 16 people in Paris last week and were on the run for two days before being killed by police.
Last month, Tehrek-e-Taliban Pakistan, an offshoot of Al-Qaeda terror group, had shot dead 145 people including 135 children at Army school in Peshawar. (AGENCIES)
