Panchyats will keep eyes on birds, hunters at Nikki Tawi

JAMMU, Apr 20: Panchayats will come forward to provide a safe environment to the migratory birds coming to the Nikki Tawi river. For this, awareness boards will be installed in the Hot Spot areas of birds.
This information was given during ‘Tawi the Lifeline’, Birds Film Show/Seminar programme , held at Mandan Deer Park on Thursday. The Programme was organised by The Himalayan Avian in collaboration with Wildlife Protection Department.
Guldev Raj presented the photographs of migratory birds coming every winter at Tawi river site, during the last 10 years on a projector and told that some edges of Tawi river have become favorite places for migratory birds. Bishan Dass, Sarpanch of Sum-Top panchayat, announced that boards would be installed in Sum-Top area where migratory birds soujaran in winter. On the other hand, some representatives raised the issue during the seminar that hunters/poachers come from the city to hunt migratory birds on Tawi river in winter.
There should be a ban on these. On this, Suresh Kumar Gupta, Chief Wildlife Warden Jammu Kashmir sought information from Panchayat representatives and social workers and said that raids would be conducted in the area in the coming season. Whoever hunts, a case will be registered under the Wildlife Protection Act.
Wildlife Protection Department will also create awareness about migratory birds by putting up some boards in Tawi area. Binny Sharma, Sarpanch of Badyal Brahamana raised issue of the dumping garbage in Badyal Tawi river where migratory birds sit.
Yashpal Mangotra, general secretary of Tawi Welfare Society also expressed his views. On the occasion, Darshan Mehra, Ravindra Thapalu, CM Sharma, Joint Director of Agriculture Department Arvindra Singh Reen, Regional Warden Wildlife Conservation Department Dr. Kumar MK and Ravinder Thaploo were present as special guests.
