RAJOURI, June 28: Sarpanches and Panches in a one day convention at Thana Mandi today demanded their empowerment and urged the Government to fulfill its commitment in this regard.
The convention, which was chaired by Fazal Hussian chairman of the Panches and Sarpanches Association also demanded that panches and Sarpanches be given salary and the amount of Rs 120 given under NAREGA scheme be enhanced to Rs 250 per day as the same is insufficient.
The convention also demanded that Sarpanches be nominated to four seats of Upper House, which are to be elected by the Panchayats. They said that despite the promises made by the Government of empowering the Panchayats nothing has been done on ground in this regard till date.
The convention said by denying the powers to the Panchayats the Government was ignoring the basic institutes of democracy.
Meanwhile Nana Ji ex Sarpanch and a political activist has also demanded empowerment of Panchayats with implementation of 73rd and 74th amendment of the Indian Constitution. He said this will go a long way in strengthening the basic institutes of democracy in the state.
