Srinagar, July 9: The Panchayat members of south Kashmir’s Shopian district today staged a protest against “step-motherly treatment is being meted out with them” at the hands of local administration.
Javaid Qadri, who is the president of Sarpanch and Panch Association, Shopian, told Excelsior that the administration is ignoring the Panchayat members. “We are not being consulted for any work. Since PDP-BJP Government took over the reign of the State, we are being ignored despite the fact that we are elected representatives of the people. We are being exploited,” he said.
Qadri alleged that the DC Shopian has “undermined their role”.  “The district officers in league with contractors are looting State funds and there is no value left for Panchayati rule,” he alleged.
The Sarpanchs and Panchs held the protest at Town Hall in Shopian and gave a 10 -day ultimatum to Government for “mending its ways”.
Qadri asked the DC to arrange a meeting of Panchayat members and all district officers. “If he failed to do so, then we will start a hunger strike from July 22 against the Government,” he said.
