Pakistan releases 163 Indian fishermen

NEW DELHI:
Pursuant to the joint statement between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in Ufa, the Pakistan Government today released 163 Indian fishermen who will return to India via Wagha border tomorrow.
Sources in the Pakistan high commission said, ”Pakistan is committed to move forward on the joint statement released by Mr Modi and Mr Sharif at Ufa.”
The sources said the 163 fishermen were being released and would reach India tomorrow. After a bilateral meeting between Mr Modi and Mr Sharif in Ufa, Russia earlier this month, the two countries agreed on a joint statement which outlined a number of steps to take forward the relationship including release of fishermen in each other’s custody, along with their boats, within a period of 15 days.
However, subsequent incidents of firing on the border and the Gurdaspur terror attacks had put a question mark on the talks. (AGENCIES)
