Owing to some mechanical snag, the motor boat of BSF guards forced the occupants to abandon it and call for rescue. Unfortunately one of the jawans among the squad was carried down by a strong drift of the Chenab River. However the Pakistani Rangers rescued him and he is now in their custody. We are thankful to the Rangers for saving the life of a jawan from calamitous situation. Now they should respond to the message of BSF authorities to arrange for safe return of the jawan back to his unit in Akhnoor. There is international law and precedents governing safe return of security/army personnel if they unwittingly stray into the territory of the neighbouring country. It will be reminded that in the past India has always returned such strayed persons, civilians or in uniform, when they were caught or picked up on our territory. It is a goodwill gesture and is expected from both sides of the dividing line. We are hopeful that at a time when the two countries are making efforts to continue the process of talks, Pakistani Rangers will do nothing to derail the talks or put a hurdle in the way.
