NEW DELHI, June 17: The Finance Ministry has asked LIC to devise a strategy with a view to focus on young people so that the average age of policy holders can be brought down leading to improvement in bottom line.
“The average age of policyholders (of LIC) is very high. It needs to come down,” a top Finance Ministry official said.
LIC should bring proper policy and reach out to younger people so that this objective can be achieved, the official added.
Average age of insured with LIC is 37 years. Higher average age raises risk for LIC. Lower the age of people, the mortality rate such cases are lower. Thus, it will help the company in improving profitability.
The insurer behemoth has a market share of around 81 per cent in terms of new business policies and 71.3 per cent in terms of new business premium during 2011-12.
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in a recent meeting with the heads of the public sector insurers had appreciated role of LIC in implementation of social security schemes.
“I congratulate LIC for being the trust factor among the people. LIC also is successfully implementing Social Security Schemes – Aam Aadmi Bimay Yojana and Janashree Bima Yojana (JBY),” he had said.
“I would advise LIC to work out “Kisaan Bima Yojana”, a life insurance scheme for the farmers on the lines of JBY where the coverage can be extended up to the age of 65 or 70 years and the additional premium could be borne by the farmers covered under the scheme,” he had said.
In order to increase penetration of insurance in the country, the Finance Ministry has advised insurers to appoint Business Correspondents as agents.
It will make business sense for insurance companies to appoint these Business Correspondents as agents to tap the huge potential of insurance coverage in rural areas. (PTI)

Israel’s defence attache to have luxury apartment
JERUSALEM, June 17: Concerned over the security of its representatives in India, Israel has decided to upgrade the official residence of its defence attache in New Delhi to a luxury apartment.
The new residence is expected to cost between USD 15,000 to USD 20,000 per month, which is much higher than the apartment that has housed defence attaches in New Delhi in the past, a media report said.
“Unfortunately, the threats against Israeli envoys, as was evident in the latest attack in India, in which an envoy’s wife was injured, oblige us to pursue an extended security package, which includes overhead expenses that are intended to ensure the protection of the envoy and his or her family members”, Israel’s defence ministry said.
“All Israeli representatives are protected according to security instructions issued by the Shin Bet (Israel’s internal security agency), including military and defence ministry attaches all over the world.
“The military and defence ministry attaches in New Delhi play a critical role in the strategic relationship between Israel and India and in the defence and economic cooperation between the states,” the ministry said, as quoted by news website Ynet.
The chosen apartment will eventually have to receive budgetary and security authorisations.
The decision towards upgrade comes almost four months after an Israeli defence ministry official’s wife was injured in a terror attack in New Delhi, for which Israel blamed Iran.
The terrorist attack in February injured Tal Yeshohua Koren while she was on way to pick up her children from school.
India is Israel’s largest purchaser of military equipments, estimated to be around 50 per cent of Israeli defence industries’ total exports, highlighting the importance of such representatives. (PTI)

“I’m quite sensitive to people. You pick up on moods quicker, I think. I’m also really good at sensing if someone is around. It’s weird, it’s like a sixth sense.
“I always know if someone’s taking a picture as well… You see people just taking a picture casually at a different (restaurant) table. I’ve got into the habit now of going up to people with my phone with the flash on and just start taking pictures two inches away from their face,” he said. (PTI)

Cox celebrates birthday with ex-husband, daughter
LOS ANGELES, June 17: Courteney Cox, who filed for divorce from David Arquette recently, celebrated her 48th birthday having lunch with the actor and their daughter Coco.
The pair have remained close friends following their 20-month separation. Since parting ways in the fall of 2010, Cox and Arquette, 40 — who met on the set of the first “Scream” film and wed in 1999 — have both spoken out about how their friendship has never been stronger, reported Us magazine.
“Our relationship is probably better than it would be if we lived together. It’s definitely better than it used to be. We communicate better, we have much more respect for each other, we listen,” Cox said in an interview last year.
Though papers have been signed since March, the pair’s formal divorce filing occurred just before what would have been their thirteenth wedding anniversary.
Arquette filed papers first that day, and a source said the actor’s timing wasn’t meant as a cruel dig towards the “Cougar Town” star.
“He’s in love with Christina McLarty,” the insider explained of Arquette’s decision to officially end things now, adding that he is hoping to “build a life” with the TV reporter, whom he has been dating since the fall. (PTI)
