Excelsior Correspondent

Addressing the meeting, Sena president, RR Raina, said that he would take up the case of the ancient Fort with the Divisional Commissioner Jammu and if needed would also approach to Archaeology Department for maintenance and renovation of the Fort.

Bollywood looks forward to a crowded movie calender in 2014

NEW DELHI, Jan 1: The race to the 100 crore club and beyond will get more exciting in 2014 with Aamir, Shah Rukh and Salman Khan battling it out at the box office even as a crop of upcoming actors and their films are set to challenge the Khan reign in Bollywood.

January’s most anticipated film is ‘Jai Ho’ which will mark Salman’s return to the big screen after a gap of one and a half years. Slated for January 24 release, ‘Jai Ho’ will see him play the role of a common man with lot of muscle power.

The film is directed by his brother Sohail Khan. The trailer features the ‘Dabangg’ star fist fighting enemies while Tabu plays a proud sister. After a long time ‘Jai Ho’ will see Danny Denzongpa playing a baddie.

Salman and Eid releases equal to box office success. After the blockbuster success of ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ in 2012, the actor is releasing his second film ‘Kick’ on July 27 this year.

Aamir ended 2013 with ‘Dhoom 3’ and looks set to have another great year in 2014. He has teamed up with his ‘3 Idiots’ director Raj Kumar Hirani for ‘PK’.

The story of the film has been kept under tight wraps but it seems that Hirani, who has had a fail-proof directing record so far with ‘Munnabhai’ films and ‘3 Idiots’, is taking on godmen in his next, which will release on June 6.

King Khan as Shah Rukh is known among his fans is also in the race with two films. After the triumphant journey of ‘Chennai Express’ at the box office, SRK is back with his friend Farah Khan with the aptly titled ‘Happy New Year’.

SRK recently revealed that he will star in Yash Raj Films’ ‘Fan’. The film where SRK will play the role of an ardent fan, will be directed by ‘Band Baaja Baarat’ helmer Maneesh Sharma.

The Khan rule for over two decades is facing fierce challenge from newcomers like Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and Sushant Singh Rajput.

The other films to look forward to in the crowded 2014 slate are ‘Dedh Ishqiya’, ‘Gunday’, ‘Bang Bang’, ‘Bymokesh Baskhi’, ‘Bombay Velvet’, ‘Phantom’, ‘Singham 2’, ‘Action Jackson’, ‘Bhootnath Returns’, ‘Gulab Gang’, ‘Welcome Back’, ‘Jagga Jasoos, ‘Humshakal’, ‘Dawat-e-Ishq’, ‘Hasee To Phasee’, ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’ and Main Tera Hero among others.

With his interesting choices be it the deaf-mute character in ‘Barfi!’ or blockbuster ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, Ranbir is climbing the charts as the new heartthrob in Bollywood.

In 2014, he has re-teamed with his ‘Barfi!’ director Anurag Basu for ‘Jagga Jasoos’ besides his role in Anurag Kashyap’s period saga ‘Bombay Velvet’, which releases on Christmas.

Ranveer Singh-Arjun Kapoor will be seen romancing Priyanka Chopra in Ali Abbas Zafar’s ‘Gunday’. Based on the coal mafia in Kolkata of the ’70s, the story of two gangsters, is a tribute to Yash Chopra’s 1979 Amitabh Bachchan starrer ‘Kaala Pathar’. The film releases on February 14.

Another rising Bollywood star Sushant Singh Rajput will play the role of Byomkesh Bakshi in Dibakar Banerjee’s period adaptation of Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s famous character. It is slated to release on December 12.

It should be an interesting year for Bollywood diva Madhuri Dixit as she returns to silver screen with ‘Dedh Isqiya’ and ‘Gulab Gang’. Director Abhishek Chaubey’s sequel to ‘Ishqiya’ will see Dixit romancing Naseeruddin Shah. Also starring Arshad Warsi and Huma Qureshi, the film releases on January 10.

2013 was a mix year for Hrithik Roshan. While his outing as a superhero in ‘Krrish 3’ won at the box office, Roshan had to suffer ill health and separation from wife Suzanne.

Hrithik will enter the box office race in 2014 with Sidharth Anand’s ‘Bang Bang’. Starring Katrina Kaif, the film, faced delays due to Hrithik’s head injury and surgery but is now slated to release on October 2. He is also re-teaming with Kareena Kapoor and his ‘Agneepath’ director Karan Malhotra for ‘Shudhi’.

The year’s another big release is not a Bollywood film but has fans from all over India looking forward to it as Rajinikanth’s charm is all pervasive. The megastar’s ‘Kochadaiyaan’, directed by daughter Soundarya Rajnikanth Ashwin, is tentatively slated for mid January release.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan is reviving his act of a friendly ghost in ‘Bhootnath Returns’.

Choreographer-turned-director Prabhu Deva had a disappointing year in 2013 with both ‘Ramaiya Vastavaiya’ and ‘R… Rajkumar’ failing to live up to the expectation but he is hoping for a better result this year with Ajay Devgn starrer ‘Action Jackson’.

After ‘Chennai Express’, Rohit Shetty is bringing Devgn starrer ‘Singham 2’.

Akshay Kumar has two releases this year with ‘It’s Entertainment’ and ‘Holiday’.

Priyanka Chopra has a lot to live up to in her second release where she plays the role of Olympian Mary Kom. Directed by Omung Kumar and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the biopic will tentatively release in July.

Pareeniti Chopra has two releases in ‘Haasee To Phasee’ and ‘Dawat-e-Ishq’.

Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan’s ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’ is another film to watch out in 2014.

‘Student of The Year’ stars — Alia Bhatt (Highway’, ‘Two States’), Varun Dhawan ‘Main Tera Hero’ and Siddharth Malhotra ‘Hansee to Phasee’ — will have a busy year.

‘Welcome Back’ will see Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor returning with John Abraham and Shruti Haasan as the new additions.

Kangana Ranaut has been charming in the trailers of ‘Queen’ where she plays a small town girl again after ‘Tanu Weds Manu’.

Sajid Khan is looking forward to put the debacle of ‘Himmatwala’ behind him with another comedy, Saif Ali Khan-Reitesh Deshmukh starrer ‘Hamshakals’.

Director Hansal Mehta and Rajkumar Yadav have teamed up again for ‘City Lights’ after ‘Shahid’. (PTI)

Children of lesser God

Sir,
This in reference to the photograph of four children enjoying their free time on a Sumo after the hard work Page 1 of the DE Dec 26.
It is an irony of fate that our society has discarded people and becoming children who work hard for themselves and their families with honesty. These children need to be helped with tools that keep them engaged in their work while keeping themselves healthy and neat after the work. They need to be educated by conscientious members of the society. They are doing that work, which even our Municipalities have failed to perform. They are children who are earning as well as doing service to the society by picking solid waste of polythene, plastic, tin and iron pieces from the garbage generated by our city culture of the modern times thus, helping us to recycle the waste into useful products. Unfortunately, such children are neither looked after by the pseudo developed society nor by the Government. I would have suggested the other title for the photograph-“Happy children, who are salt of the soil.”
These children need the help of people who would support them to serve the society in much better  manner. On the other hand, the need of the hour is to educate all school going children about managing the solid waste of their house hold, schools and surroundings to keep the environment clean and healthy. Helpful teachers need to take the lead in this direction.

Four suspected SIMI members held in Ujjain

BHOPAL, Jan 1: Close on the heels of arrest of five SIMI activists in the state last week, four suspected operatives of the banned organisation were apprehended by the Madhya Pradesh ATS and Counter Terrorist Group in Ujjain.

Huge amount of explosives were also seized from the suspected Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) men during the late last night operation.

The four arrested have been identified as Javed Nagori, Abdul Aziz, Mohammad Adil and Abdul Wahi, state ATS chief and Inspector General of Police Sanjeev Shami told reporters here.

The explosives recovered from the four include 12 bombs, a pipe bomb, 900 gelatine sticks and more than 600 detonators, he said.

The interrogation of the four suspects was on, Shami said.

Those arrested included Abu Faizal, who had escaped from the state’s Khandwa jail with five others a few months ago.

Later, the ATS claimed Faizal and two others who were arrested had links with fundamentalist terror group Tehreek-e-Taliban, which is active in the north-western Pakistan. (PTI)

Plight of State OBCs

Sir,
In J&K State, it is unfortunate for the State OBCs to be the State Subjects of this state. The  sufferings of the OBCs in the country came down to some level in the free country, may be after the Apex Court’s Judgment of 1992 on Mandal report, but in J&K the misery continues.
During the Parliament election in 2008, Congress MP, Madan Lal Sharma before elections made promise to set up OBC Advisory and Development Board and for the state OBCs organized a programme at Muthi near his house. He won the election with flying colours and the setting up of the “State OBC Advisory and Development Board” came into its existence.  But this Board too did not meet our demands.
The present  President of the State unit of Congress assured many a times to fullfil the demands of due share of the State OBCs but all went in vain and proved his promises all false propanganda.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah promised to think over the proposed magic solution of the OBCs sufferings under Para 95 of the Apex Court’s Judgment of 1992 as this solution is already being implemented in case of handicaps and ex-servicemen by providing them the horizontal Reservation. But the result that surfaced was the “Census of the State OBCs”. Govt. is thinking of census after 22 years of Apex Court’s Judgment on Mandal report, but this is far away from the interests of the State OBCs.
State OBC Advisory and Development Board was set up on 15-02-2010 to ameliorate the sufferings of the State OBCs. But this board could convene only two meetings without any results in the past four years. This only means that this OBC Board instead of solving the OBC problems was set up to block the wheels of Justice for the State OBCs.
One more OBC institution called “State Commission for backward classes” has been fully converted into Backward Area Commission and what its chairman and  members are doing is only to please the Govt.
So both OBC institutions in the State are either defunct or working against the State OBCs.
The successive Governments have so far marginalised this section of society by not conceding their genuine demands.

AIBCU holds meet

Excelsior Correspondent
RAJOURI, Jan 1: All India Backward Classes Union (AIBCU) held a meeting under the chairmanship of vice president AA Najar, in which large number OBC people participated. During the meeting, the speakers raised their voice over the treacherous attitude of the State rules. They said that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz are playing deceitful tactics to cheat the due share of 27 per cent of the State OBCs in order to corner 82 per cent reservation for the so called Muslim and Hindu upper castes, who form only 15 per cent of the State population. On the occasion, Abdul Mehmood was appointed as district president, Rajouri. Ghulam Ahmed Kumahar, senior vice president and Mohammad Shakil Saksaaz, district president Anantnag also expressed their views.

2013:India won Kishenganga arbitration; Cauvery award notified

NEW DELHI, Jan 1: In 2013, Indian hydrologists had to don the mantle of diplomats and lawyers when New Delhi fought hard and won an international arbitration against Pakistan over the Kishenganga hydro project in Jammu and Kashmir.

Besides, the high point of the year gone by remained the notification of the final award of the Cauvery inter-state water dispute tribunal after a Supreme Court rap.

Despite sharp differences among ministries, the Ministry of Water Resources managed to get the nod of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs for continuation of the Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme (AIBP) with a total outlay of Rs 55,200 crore. It is expected that states would create an additional irrigation potential of 8.7 million hectare.

In a major relief for India, the Hague-based International Court of Arbitration rejected Pakistan’s objections by upholding New Delhi’s right to divert water from the Kishenganga river for power generation in J&K.

In its final award on the India-Pakistan arbitration case, the court also decided that India shall release a minimum flow of nine cumecs (cubic meters per second) into the Kishenganga/Neelum river below the Kishenganga hydro-electric project (KHEP) at “all times”.

The issue of minimum flow was left unresolved by the partial award issued on February 18, 2013.

The court, in its final award pronounced on December 20, also decided that both India and Pakistan may seek “reconsideration” of its decision through the Permanent Indus Commission and the mechanisms of the Indus Waters Treaty “after a period of seven years from the first diversion of water from the Kishenganga river”.

In its partial award, the international court had unanimously decided that the 330 mw project in J&K is a run-of-river plant within the definition of the Indus Waters Treaty.

It had also held that India was free to divert water from the Kishenganga/Neelum River for power generation.

The court has given India the right to divert water for the project and has accepted Pakistan’s demand for uninterrupted flow of water.

In another milestone, the final award of the Cauvery Waters Dispute Tribunal was notified on February 19, 2013 after a delay of six years.

The move came after the Supreme Court rapped the Centre for delaying the decision and had on February 4 set February 20 as the deadline to issue notification.

The Tribunal, comprising chairman Justice N P Singh and members N S Rao and Sudhir Narain, in a unanimous award in February, 2007 had determined the total availability of water in the Cauvery basin at 740 thousand million cubic (TMC) feet at the Lower Coleroon Anicut site.

The proceedings of the Tribunal, set up in June, 1990, went on for more than 16 years.

In, what was then described as a balancing act, the Tribunal gave Tamil Nadu 419 TMC of water(as against the demand of 562 TMC); Karnataka 270 TMC (as against its demand of 465 TMC); Kerala 30 TMC and Puducherry 7 TMC.

For environmental protection, it had reserved 10 TMC.

After the issuance of the notification, institutions like the Cauvery River Authority (CRA) chaired by the Prime Minister and the CMC will cease to exist.

New organisations like the Cauvery Management Board and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee will be constituted which will have representatives from all the co-basin states, experts in hydrology and agriculture.

These will be headed by an officer of the Central Government and will be under the control of the Centre.

While Tamil Nadu had been demanding an early notification, Karnataka was opposed to it saying till the times cases filed by it in the Supreme Court are settled, the notification should be kept in abeyance. (AGENCIES)

Family of gangraped victim meets Governor, seeks security

KOLKATA, Dec 1: The family of the 16-year-old gangrape victim today alleged that they have been threatened to leave the State by the city police along with the body of their daughter and sought security for themselves.

The parents along with some Left leaders, met West Bengal Governor M K Narayanan and demanded death penalty for the accused.

“We want that those who have gangraped my daughter should be given death penalty. We have also requested the Governor to see that our family members are provided security as we fear for our lives,” the father of the victim said after meeting the Governor.

“Police officials last night threatened me and asked me to leave the state and return to Bihar with the body. The police officials and some local toughs also threatened that if I did not, they would stop me from driving my taxi,” the father, who is a taxi driver and hails from Bihar, said.

“I have told the Governor about the police officials who threatened me and the Governor has assured that the matter will be looked into,” he said.

Protests have rocked several parts of Kolkata since yesterday over the brutal rape and death of the girl with demands for justice to the girl.

There was a tussle between Left parties and Kolkata Police last night over the cremation of the body of the girl who died in a city hospital of injuries suffered during an attempt to set herself on fire at her home on December 23.

The girl’s father, who is close to CITU, said it was decided by the family and the trade union that the body would be kept in Peace Haven mortuary in the city and a condolence rally would be taken out today.

But when the body was being taken to the mortuary late last night, police forcefully took it for cremation, the girl’s father and CITU officials alleged.

“The police took away the body forcefully and tried to cremate it at the Nimatala Ghat crematorium, but could not do so as the death certificate was in possession of the girl’s father. After the news spread, we too rushed to the crematorium and protested forcing the police to retreat,” CPI(M) State secretariat member Rabin Deb told reporters.

“The police gave the excuse that the condolence rally with the body cannot be allowed as there is dearth of policemen due to new year celebrations,” he claimed.

Denying the allegations, Joint Commissioner of Police (HQ) Rajeev Mishra said, “It is a totally false allegation. Whatever was done was done in consultation with Bidhahnagar police, under whose jurisdiction the girl’s home is. We did not forcefully take away the body.”

Deputy Commissioner of Bidhannagar Police (Detective Department) Arnab Ghosh said, “The incident happened under the jurisdiction of Kolkata police. So we can’t comment on it.”

The body is currently in the custody of the family and CITU.

The girl’s family has also alleged negligence by R G Kar Medical College Hospital where she had been admitted.

The ruling Trinamool Congress has accused the Left Front of launching a ‘false propaganda’ against the State Government.

“The CPI(M) is alienated from the people and they are desperately trying to launch a wrong propaganda against the Government over this (gangrape) issue. But the people will not accept this,” TMC General Secretary Mukul Roy told reporters.

He said the girl’s death was a sad incident and the administration did whatever was necessary to bring the culprits to book.

“The accused are in jail and a charge sheet has been filed against them,” Roy said.

West Bengal Left Front chairman Biman Bose wondered, “Under whose instructions, the police has been so overactive. We want the guilty to be punished. We will organise protest- rallies and programmes throughout the state.” (PTI)

Copying menace

Shiban Khaibri
Morally and ethically, a teacher is supposed to be above any extent of pliability and like gold, carries the property of not rusting but only shining and spreading light of knowledge and building a nation.  If builders turn out to be demolishers and light spreaders themselves grope in the dark, the nation is susceptible to suffer in that, the generations can remain bereft of the virtues of knowledge, efficiency and capabilities. We cannot go ahead in any way, in any field and in any manner unless we sustain and strengthen hard work based on the solid foundations of sincerity and honesty.  A teacher converts a student into a full fledged human being, a knowledgeable and wise human being from a simple creature to occupy a purposeful and useful place in the society. The role of teacher being so high and noble is, therefore expected to possess high character, efficiency, self restraint, illuminated vision, piety and religiousness – a role model for his or her students. Against this background and held belief, when we hear that some members from such a noble profession resort to utter brazen unfair means to get the next grade or promotion, or a small monetary increment,  the confidence in and the respect for a teacher gets shaken.
Recently, out of a number of 30 teachers, allegedly indulging in mass copying, as many as 13 were caught red handed by Police in an examination centre in Rajouri. The situation appeared free for all, in an organized and planned way and strangely this time the case was not in respect of the students but the “respected” teachers themselves breaking all hell loose about the principles of morality, legality, fairness, and honesty. The nefarious aim was to secure “Masters’ grade” not by means fair – of hard work, reading books and knowledgeable material but ostensibly by offering bribes. Imagine when such stuff is deputed for exam. duties, the cardinal business of which is to conduct tests in all fairness without any cheating and to deal very effectively with those, who resort to copying or any other means of cheating, they in all probabilities at best could be expected to negotiate deals for “allowing” and “ensuring” foolproof copying thus marring very mercilessly the prospects of the hard working and sincere students who sit to take exams only after a lot of hard work in studies. The sordid story is unique in as much as they were caught doing the dark act in night’s darkness with a dark mind and a dark intention with aids and tools dipped in all black darkness. They were caught at those very centres where they were expected to appear the next day in broad day open light. They instead believed that most of the dark deeds were committed in darkness. Copying is thieving and the conventional characteristics of thieving is that the act is committed in the darkness of the night when the unsuspecting victims are usually fast asleep readying their bodies and brains for the next day’s toil. The head of a family, institution or the country is expected to be all honest, sincere but firm and resolute and here the head – the Principal and other concerned authorities are suspected of having  been  in full connivance and rather having facilitated the “smooth” operation without any let or hindrance hence choosing the night to ensure that these “intelligent and efficient” teacher candidates enter into the Master grade of School Education department to serve the purpose  and aim of the education with intent to “raise” its standard and stature.
The Police authorities of Rajouri deserve all praises for their swift action by arresting the culprits in the interests of fairness, equity and upholding the law. The prospects of the deserving and the promising students have thus been sought to be protected. As per reports, the Police party accompanied by a Magistrate raided the examination centre at Gmbhir Muglan in Manjakote tehsil of district Rajouri on Dec 27, 2013 at 11 pm – arresting 13 including the Principal. Although 30 such “illustrious” candidates were engaged in the shabby act, yet only 13 could get into the police net, rest managing to escape taking advantage of the darkness. It got revealed that the accused had “bought and managed” question papers in advance from the superintendent and other concerned staff members, the same which they were required to appear in the next day and were copying answers on the answer books. The word “superintendent” means one who supervises (against any mischief or hanky panky), one who performs as a care taker, one who upholds and enforces law and not the one who connives with the thieves. It is further revealed that the accused had managed earlier papers in the same manner after a “commercial deal” of Rs20000 per candidate had been struck with those in – charge of the examination.
The fact that some courses in Urdu from the Jamia Urdu Aligarh University of UP which reportedly are  treated by the Education department as equivalent to B.Ed  degree needs a review of experts as the standard of the level of the education imparted in  our state is fairly good and even at par with the best of the universities of the country and while  recognizing academic  courses of other institutions to match with our courses should not be the ones with diluted standards,  instead should be at par with,  if not  above our level. Copying breeds corruption and spreads inefficiency, the indulgers nursing a hollowed mindset of having glorified deceit which strengthens their  tendencies of employing the same tactics in other walks of their life at each stage. Such people can resort to crimes of various hues and not only the government but all in the society must resist and fight such a cruel joke with the highest institutions of learning and light.
Just up to three decades back, we hardly heard, not even rarely, that some Superintendent of an examination centre had “sold” some question paper to those whom he or she would keep the same as an irretrievable secret till the announced date and appropriate ticking of the fixed second of the watch, open the packet’s seal and arrange its distribution and then guard the whole exercise with an eagle’s eye. The heart beats in waves of the candidates ( what could  be in it) used to collide with those of the Superintendent for  satisfactorily and in deference to the legal , moral and procedural  conducting of the exercise produced a synthesis of genuineness and  fair play in all respects. When the prized packets were being delivered by the University or Board authorities to the Superintendents and other  designated officials, back home neither their  spouses nor they themselves ever used to think to use any contents for personal illegal gains for turning rich overnight but used to guard the public  “amanat” more than their lives. Their apparent mediocre, if not poor, level of economic status was providing to them more solitude, contentment and dignity rather than   going the other way for which their inner conscience always  would curse and reprimand them. Were we less developed then or are we more developed now comparatively is an important issue to ponder over. The fact that most of the staff at each level associated with the exams are even now still holding the side of honesty and integrity and the number of black sheep is not more to cause alarming concern but it is a reality that we cannot afford any compromise with the sanctity of the knowledge, the art of learning, spreading of light and the fair test of knowing who knew how much and what much. That is the avowed job of teachers who cannot afford to falter, fret and tempt in their noblest and the most respected role of teaching, guiding and imparting trainings in career and character building of their students. They are gold and “if gold rusts, what then can iron do?”
