Electricity failure in CD Hospital shocking: DAK

Srinagar, Jan 2: Doctors have said that the failure of electricity supply in Chest Disease Hospital that comes under essential services was shocking.
A statement of Doctors Association Kashmir, DAK, said it is shocking that Chest Disease (CD) Hospital Srinagar had no electricity for two days with the result patients faced huge inconvenience.
Quoting its president Dr Nisar-ul-Hassan the statement said the Chest Disease Hospital Srinagar during winter months receives huge number of chronic obstructive lung disease patients requiring oxygen as life saving treatment.
“Without electricity oxygen is not delivered to these patients putting precious lives to risk. This forced attendants and patients to stage massive protests in the campus of CD Hospital who had come to receive specialized care from peripheral Hospitals. It is pathetic that CD Hospital has no genset available and during power cuts, patients are left to mercy of Almighty. This is a criminal negligence on part of authorities,” he said.

JAMMU, Jan 2: Two players of BSNL J&K Circle Weight Lifting/Power Lifting/Best Physique Team namely Bansi Lal and Deepak Jyoti won gold and silver medals respectively in the 13th All India BSNL Weight Lifting/Power Lifting/Best Physique Tournament held at Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh recently.
These two players have excelled at the National Level many a time and brought laurels to BSNL J&K Circle.

Samar scripts narrow win over Dashmesh Club, enters finals

SIMBAL, Jan 2: Registering a narrow win by 4 runs over Dashmesh Cricket Club, Gadigarh, in the semifinal, Samar Cricket Club Jammu entered the finals of the Mahant Bachhitter Singh Memorial T20 Cricket Tournament, being organized by Simbal Welfare Association at Government High School ground, here.
Now, Samar Cricket Club will take on Young Star Simbal Camp in the final on January 13, 2013 at the same venue.
Earlier, batting first, Samar Club scored a fighting total of 137 runs in 19.3 overs, Monu was the top scorer with 37 runs, while Chetan contributed 28 runs to the total. Kaka and Jagandeep chipped in with 20 runs each. For Dashmesh Club, Ramandeep Singh bagged 5 wickets, while Tinku bagged 2. Bunty and Ricky shared one wicket each.
In reply, Dashmesh Club was bundled out for 133 runs, thus lost the match by a narrow margin of 4 runs. Bunty top scored with 38 runs, while Panku and Kamal contributed 29 and 16 runs to the total respectively. For Samar Club, Sidhharth and Kaka took 2 wickets each, while Vishwajeet, Sourav and Kamal Kishore claimed one wicket apiece. Kaka was adjudged man of the match.
Satinder Singh, MD Gurjeet Sports Industry was the chief guest in today’s semifinal match.

Four injured in cooker blast

JAMMU, Jan 2: Four members of a family were injured, when a cooker blasted in RS Pura.
As per reports, a cooker (utensil used to prepare food) blasted in ward number 7, RS Pura, in which four women received injuries.
All the injured were rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment, where their condition was stated to be out of danger, when last reports came in.
Police has taken the cognizance.

Farooq, Omar congratulate J&K team

JAMMU, Jan 2: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Dr Farooq Abdullah, who happens to be the president of Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) today congratulated the State cricket team for reaching the quarterfinal stage of the Ranji Trophy Cricket Tournament for the second time ever.
“Congratulations to the J&K cricket team for reaching the quarters of the Ranji trophy. 1st time since 2000 so well done chaps,” Omar said.
Dr Farooq in a message to J&K skipper Parvez Rasool said, “I am very happy to know that our team has qualified for the quarterfinals of Ranji trophy. I congratulate you and the other team members for this historic achievement”.
In a fantastic achievement, the Jammu and Kashmir cricket team today qualified for Ranji Trophy quarterfinals for the first time since 2000.

Power shut down

JAMMU, Jan 2: In order to carry out the rectification of hotspots/weak points, replacement of worn out jumpers, replacement of damaged disc insulators and preventive routine maintenance of 220/132/33 KV Grid Station Barn and transmission lines, the power supply to District Reasi, Akhnoor, Bhalwal, Jagti, Jourian, Gharota and areas being fed from Grid Station Pouni Chak and Canal will remain affected on January 4, 2014 from 10 a m to 1 p m.

India to host first Wimbledon tennis event outside UK

New Delhi, Jan 2:
Former Great Britain No.1 Tim Henman will be in India to spearhead a new initiative aimed at boosting the development of junior tennis in the country.
India will host the first Wimbledon tennis event outside the UK as 11-time-Tour winner Henman will be in Delhi and Mumbai later this month to launch ‘The Road to Wimbledon’ with a series of coaching clinics and events offering local children the chance to play at Wimbledon next August.
The clinics are part of two Under-14 National singles events in Delhi (RK Khanna Tennis Centre) and Mumbai (MSLTA Tennis Centre).
The top sixteen boys and girls from these two events are invited to the Wimbledon Foundation Junior Masters in Delhi in April with the two boys and two girls finalists invited to compete in the UK HSBC National Finals on the grass at Wimbledon.
Henman, who kick-started his career in India in 1994 with three successive tournament wins on the Indian satellite circuit, will be joined by All England Club Head Coach Dan Bloxham, for the activity in Delhi and Mumbai between January 6-14.
The Wimbledon Foundation, the community, charitable and development arm of the All England Club and The Championships, Wimbledon, and HSBC have linked with All India Tennis Association (AITA) on this pilot scheme as the first phase of a long term plan to support the development of Indian tennis.
“India has a special place in my heart – 2014 marks twenty years since I made my breakthrough on the Indian satellite circuit, winning eighteen successive singles matches. This is pretty much where it started for me and thanks to The Wimbledon Foundation and HSBC this could be the start for a whole generation of Indian children,” Henman said.
“The activity in January is just the beginning of The Road to Wimbledon India and I can’t wait to see how we can help develop tennis in India over the coming years,” he added. (PTI)

Young Star Simbal enters hockey finals

JAMMU, Jan 2: Outplaying Hiranagar Hockey Club by four goals to three via tie-breaker in the semifinals, Young Star Simbal Camp entered the finals of 1st Shaheed Bhagat Singh Memorial Hockey Tournament, being organized by Shaheed-e-Azam Foundation, under the aegis of Hockey J&K at KK Hakhu Astroturf Stadium, here.
Earlier, both the teams ended the stipulated time with (1-1) tie, with Suraj netting the goal for Hiranagar Club in 16th minute and Ramanjot scoring it for Young Star in 51st minute.
In the tie-breaker, Inderjeet Singh, Ramanjot Singh and Shivam Sharma succeeded in scoring goals for Young Star, while Akash and Suraj Jasrotia scored goals for Hiranagar Club.
The second semifinal will be played between Sittu Club and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Hockey Club at the same venue at 1:30 pm tomorrow.

Prinkle enters National Tennis Series semis

JAMMU, Jan 2: Defeating Ganeshi of Madhya Pradesh in the quarterfinals, promising Jammu and Kashmir tennis player, Prinkle Singh entered the semifinals of the ongoing National Tennis Series, being held at Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh.
In the doubles event, Prinkle Singh alongwith Arja Chakarborty of Uttar Pradesh defeated the duo of Dakshita Girishkumar Patel of Maharashtra and Tuhena of Madhya Pradesh by (6-2, 6-4) to qualify for the semifinals, after getting bye in the pre-quarterfinals.

Christmas Gold Cup Football Tourney from tomorrow

JAMMU, Jan 2: All J&K Christian Welfare Association is organizing 8th Christmas Gold Cup Football Tournament from January 4, 2014 at GGM Science College football ground, here.
According to a handout issued here, 20 prominent football teams will be participating in the Tournament.
The Tournament is being organized under the chairmanship of SM Gill, Ex-MLC and president of All J&K Christian Welfare Association alongwith Feastus Sotra, David Burat and Yousuf Don.
The Tournament is being held under the auspices of Jammu and Kashmir Football Association (JKFA).
