No plans to retire: Big B

INDORE, Jan 16:

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan today said that he has no plans to retire from acting as he believes if he does so, he would fall sick.
“I have always been confronted with the question about why I am working at the age of 71. I feel that if I stop working, I will fell sick. For each one of us work is important as it keeps our mind and body busy,” Amitabh said after receiving the Lifetime Excellence Award 2014 during the inaugural session of the Indore Management Association’s (IMA) 23rd International Management Conclave.
“If I am satisfied with my work and start thinking that I have done the best acting of my life, then the actor in me will die. I always long to face a new challenge,” he said.
In the 1990s, his family members and few other close friends advised him to take a sabbatical since he had worked a lot. Acting on their advise, he took rest and did not work for almost four years, he said.
“But later on, I realised that it was the worst decision of my life,” he said.
Recalling the days when his company Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Ltd (ABCL) went bankrupt, he said, “During that period I walked into Yash Chopra’s office and told him that I don’t have any work and he offered me a movie. So I began working again”.
“Later, I got an opportunity to host the show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ (KBC) after which I paid back all my debt, with my own resources. Today, I feel good that I had to face all those difficulties during that period which had taught me lots of lessons,” he said.
Responding to a question, Bachchan said, “I feel bad when people describe India as a developing country or a Third World country. I hate it. I believe that India has strength to become a First World nation on the basis of its youth power”. (PTI)

Floods, landslide kill 13 in Indonesia; 2 missing

MANADO, Jan 16: Days of torrential rain triggered a landslide and flash floods on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, killing at least 13 people and sending tens of thousands fleeing for safe ground, disaster officials said today.
Residents and rescuers in Sangihe district of North Sulawesi province dug through debris with their bare hands and shovels. Two bodies were pulled from the mud, and eleven others were found in the water late yesterday, said National Disaster Mitigation Agency’s spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.
More than 1,000 houses were flooded by overflowing rivers in five other districts of the province, he said.
About 40,000 people fled to temporary shelters, and rescuers were still searching today for at least two more villagers.
Police and soldiers struggled to reach about 1,000 people who were isolated in three hamlets after floods destroyed the only bridge, said the agency’s provincial chief Noldy Liow.
He said that rivers bloated by days of rain burst their banks and washed away dozens of houses and vehicles, including in the provincial capital of Manado. Floodwaters reached a meter in some places.
“Many people drowned or were buried by mud … They didn’t have time to save themselves,” Liow said.
Millions of people live in mountainous regions and near fertile plains that are close to rivers. Seasonal rains and high tides in recent days have caused widespread flooding across much of Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands that’s home to 240 million people. (AGENCIES)

Rahul not to be named PM candidate

NEW DELHI, Jan 16:

Rahul Gandhi will not be Congress party’s nominee for Prime Ministership in the April-May Lok Sabha polls but will lead the election campaign, the party announced today putting at rest all speculation about his role.
The decision was taken at the two-hour meeting of the extended Congress Working Committee brushing aside an overwhelming demand for anointing him the PM nominee ahead of the polls.
Addressing those who voiced the clamour for declaration of Rahul as PM candidate, Congress President Sonia Gandhi said there is no tradition in the party to declare a PM candidate before polls.
The demand for Rahul to be made PM candidate was raised by Kerala PCC chief Ramesh Chennithala and got instant support from a host of leaders including B K Hari Prasad, Gurudas Kamat, Ghulam Nabi Azad and youth Congress chief Rajiv Satav.
Soon after the CWC meeting began, Chennithala made a strong pitch to declare Rahul Gandhi as PM candidate saying “time has now come to do it” and reasoned this will enthuse the youth and will be beneficial for Congress in the changed demographic scenario.
As the leaders made a common chorus to name Rahul as PM pick, Sonia Gandhi intervened saying why should the party name a PM candidate before polls when there is no such precedent.
“This meeting of the AICC delcares that 2014 election campaign will be led by Rahul Gandhi,” the CWC decided adding the line in the omnibus draft resolution which will come before the AICC meeting tomorrow for approval.
Rahul has been entrusted to lead the campaign a year after he was made the party Vice President in the brain storming session at Jaipur in January last.
Taking a dig at BJP, which has declared Narendra Modi as its PM candidate, party general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said that in Congress the question of making anyone the PM candidate never arose starting from the era of Jawaharlal Nehru to the 2004 elections, which the party fought under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi.
“It is always clear who is the leader in Congress. It is never an issue for us,” he said adding it is an issue for those parties which have seen intense rivlary and dissension over Prime Ministerial candidate. (PTI)

Musharraf refuses to leave Pakistan on medical grounds: aide

LAHORE, Jan 16: Pakistan’s embattled former military dictator Pervez Musharraf has refused to leave the country on “medical grounds” until he is given “clean chit” in high treason and other cases, according to a close aide.
Contrary to the impression that “Musharraf’s illness drama” has been staged to prepare a ground to send him abroad under a deal, his friends suggest that all efforts to “persuade” him to leave the country have failed to bear fruit as the Nawaz Sharif-led government wants to “rid” 70-year-old Musharraf of as early as possible.
“Musharraf is more keen to get his name cleared in high treason and other cases rather than leaving the country on medical grounds,” said former deputy prime minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi who is considered close to the former president.
Elahi and his party – PML-Q – remained a partner with Musharraf during 2002-07. It has recently put its weight behind Musharraf and launched an offensive against the PML-N Government for ‘only’ trying him under treason charges for imposing emergency in the country.
“Gen Musharraf sees treason and other cases politically motivated and based on personal vendetta. He wants to face them and get his name honourably cleared,” he said.
There have been unconfirmed reports that Musharraf may leave Pakistan this month on ‘medical grounds’ after a deal with the PML-N brokered by international players – Saudi Arabia and the United States.
But Elahi says Musharraf has no such plan.
“Musharraf is simply not interested in leaving the country on medical grounds,” he made it clear.
Musharraf has been under treatment at the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC) in Rawalpindi since January 2 after he suffered from triple-vessel coronary artery disease and some other ‘not serious’ diseases.
Musharraf’s aide has cautioned the PML-N about the consequences of trying the former army chief.
“There will be uncontrollable fallout if the Musharraf’s trial continues. The PML-Q leadership has also moved a bill in the Senate seeking to replace the word ‘high treason’ in Article 6 of the Constitution with ‘offence against state’.
“We have contacted the opposition in the Senate for the support of our bill. We wonder as how the word ‘traitor’ can be used for the head of the Pakistan Army. This word should be replaced forthwith as it has demoralising effect on our army officers and jawans who are deployed at the Siachen and Indian border,” Elahi said. (AGENCIES)

Religious diversity enriches our cultural fabric: Obama

WASHINGTON, Jan 16: Emphasising that America embraces people of “all faiths” and of “no faith”, US President Barack Obama today said that the country’s religious diversity enriches its cultural fabric.
“America embraces people of all faiths and of no faith. We are Christians and Jews, Muslims and Hindus, Buddhists and Sikhs, atheists and agnostics,” Obama said in a proclamation to declare January 16 as the Religious Freedom Day.
“Our religious diversity enriches our cultural fabric and reminds us that what binds us as one is not the tenets of our faiths, the colours of our skin, or the origins of our names.
“What makes us American is our adherence to shared ideals — freedom, equality, justice, and our right as a people to set our own course,” he said.
America proudly stands with people of every nation who seek to think, believe, and practice their faiths as they choose, he said.
“In the years to come, my Administration will remain committed to promoting religious freedom, both at home and across the globe,” Obama said.
He also urged every country to recognise religious freedom as both a universal right and a key to a stable, prosperous, and peaceful future. (AGENCIES)

UK, US and Australian police probe Philippines sex abuse ring

LONDON, Jan 16: British police are working with Australian and US counterparts to break a Philippines paedophile ring that has been streaming live scenes of child abuse over the internet, the National Crime Agency revealed today.
The NCA, which has been investigating the ring since it discovered obscene videos on a British paedophile’s computer two years ago, called abuse in developing countries “a significant and emerging threat”
“This investigation has identified some extremely dangerous child sexual offenders who believed paying for children to be abused to order was something they could get away with,” said the agency’s Andy Baker.
“Being thousands of miles away makes no difference to their guilt.
“Protecting the victims of abuse is our priority and that means attacking every link in the chain, from dismantling the organised groups who are motivated by profit through to targeting their customers,” he added.
The enquiry – called Operation Endeavour – has taken in 12 countries and led to the arrest of 17 Britons, five of whom have been convicted. Fifteen children aged between six and 15 have been rescued.
Three other investigations into live streaming of child abuse have netted 733 suspects globally.
The investigation was sparked when Northamptonshire Police seized the computer of registered sex offender Timothy Ford, who was later jailed for eight-and-a-half years after being found guilty of paying to view live sex abuse.
The NCA added: “The use of webcams to stream live abuse, particularly from the developing world, is a significant and emerging threat according to the NCA’s CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection) command.
“Extreme poverty, the increasing availability of high-speed internet and the existence of a vast and comparatively wealthy overseas customer base has led to organised crime groups exploiting children for financial gain,” it warned. (AGENCIES)
