NEW DELHI : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said true religion cannot be the basis of hatred and division, but of mutual respect and tolerance for faiths and beliefs of all.
“It is no use celebrating Swamiji’s life, paying our respects to his ideas and teachings and honouring his memory if we do not imbibe the values that he advocated,” he said while paying homage to the memory of Swami Vivekananda on his 150th birth anniversary.
Singh said, “His truly great message for us which is of great relevance to our country and our sub-continent, was that true religion and true religiosity cannot be the basis of hatred and division but of mutual respect and tolerance for faiths and beliefs of all.”
Recalling Vivekananda’s famous address at the World Parliament of Religions at Chicago in 1893, he said, “Swami Vivekananda said sectarianism, bigotry and fanaticism have long possessed this beautiful earth. They have filled the earth with violence, drenched it often with human blood, destroyed civilisation and sent whole nations to disrepair.
“Had it not been for these horrible demons, human society would be far more advanced than it is now.”
The closing ceremony of Swami Vivekanand’s 150th birth anniversary was attended by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Defence Minister AK Antony and Culture Minister Chandresh Kumari Katoch.
Quoting Vivekananda’s speech, Singh said “Swami Vivekananda expressed the hope at the World Parliament of Religions that the bell that tolled this morning in honour of this conversion may be the death-knell of all fanaticism of all persecutions with the sword or with the pen and of all uncharitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal.”
Describing Vivekanand as a “citizen of the world”, the Prime Minister said his message has gone far and wide, inspiring millions of devotees across the world.
Singh said he has been personally inspired by Vivekanand’s syncretic views that “All who have actually attained any real religious experience never wrangle over the form in which different religions are expressed. They know that the soul of all religions is the same and so they have no quarrel with anybody just because he or she does not speak in the same tongue.”
Invoking Vivekananda, the Prime Minister said, “This syncretic and pluralist view of religion is one of the great contributions of Hinduism and of the civilisations that took root in this ancient land of ours. The idea that the whole world is one family has inspired millions all over the world.”
Singh also believed that it is an idea that defines India and the Indian view of the world.
Highlighting three central messages of Vivekananda’s teachings, Singh said, “First of all the great religions of the world seek peace on earth and goodwill among human beings.”
“Second that India’s true religions would come when every Indian feels liberated from the scourge of poverty, ignorance and disease and third that India, this great motherland of ours, has much to learn from the world around us and equally much to teach the world and that a two-way flow of knowledge between India and the world can only be part of our benefit and the benefit of all humanity.”
The Prime Minister said another major contribution made by Swami Vivekananda to modern India was to stir the minds of fellow Indians and inspire them to seek freedom and a life of dignity.
Recalling his clarion call “Arise! Awake and stop not till the goal is reached”, Singh said it was a call for spiritual as well as political liberation.
“While promoting the idea of the oneness of all religions, Swamiji promoted with equal zeal the idea of equality of all human being. Therefore, he rejected colonialism and alien rule as an affront to human dignity,” Singh said.
Observing that Swamiji’s sense of confidence without being arrogant “is a rare but precious trait,” Singh said, “It is a trait we in India today must readily acquire and jealously retain.”
Advocating tolerance, the Prime Minister said, “Let us, in all humility imbibe lessons from Swami Vivekananda. Let us learn to be tolerant of one another, have respect for all religions and dedicate ourselves to the development of our people and our country.”
“Let us be humble enough to recognise that there is much that we can learn from the world and, therefore. Be open to new ideas, new opportunities and new challenges,” he said.
The best tribute to Swamiji would be to recognise “the relevance of his teachings and his thoughts for the 21st century, for today’s India, for tomorrow’s India.” (AGENCIES)

Change education system
Sir,
The Indian education system has been the target of many allegations from students, parents and teachers. Students think they are overburdened, teachers think they are not paid enough and parents want their children to secure 99.99 percent marks. Where does the buck stop? India is already on its way to becoming a developed country. However certain things are still lacking. Education has become one of the important prerequisite to survive in the today’s world but unfortunately India is lacking behind in education. India’s education system is ranked 74th in the entire world. Education in India is a clean business today. Today’s education system creates jealousy among students. It never stresses the importance of love and care, after all that’s what life is all about. Money is an aid for living but it has become living for money. Today we are culturally strong and we need to be educationally strong also. Educational system should aim at meeting the educational needs of the entire population of different age groups. It should have the ability of preparing today’s child to futures citizen who is capable of adapting himself to various forms of self learning. A potential education system favors all the necessary and inevitable requirements of nurturing a tot into a complete humane who is conscious of all kinds of social etiquette along with technical skills. Indian education system definitely needs some reforms. Our system of education mostly empathizes on theoretical aspects, which is not sufficient for an individual to succeed in life. Practical aspects must be focused on. In colleges also syllabi must be modified in order to make the students capable of handling the real life situations. There is so much talent untapped in India and if Indian government improvises new changes in its implementation of education and career oriented education that would be good & also pave a path for an improved education system in India.
Yours etc….

Serious differences in NC, Cong over admn units, Gen Singh
Sanjeev Pargal
JAMMU, Jan 11: Open differences have surfaced among two coalition partners—National Conference and Congress on the issues of creation of new administrative units in Jammu and Kashmir and summoning of former Army chief Gen VK Singh by the Legislative Council Privilege Committee.
While Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today directly took on the Congress charging it with “creating hurdles’’ in the setting up of new administrative units, one of the Congress leaders and a Minister alleged that the National Conference was trying to take “political mileage’’ out of the issue in the year when both Lok Sabha and Assembly elections were due.
Omar in his addressing to a public meeting at Vijaypur vowed that as the Chief Minister he will keep fighting for the setting up of administrative units till he fulfills his mission.
The Chief Minister’s attack on Congress came after the latter demanded that the proposal to set up new administrative units at ground level be examined before being set up.
“Some people are creating hurdles for me in this endeavour (to set up administrative units). I know how to use what resources at which time to fulfill my mission,” Omar said without naming his coalition partner—the Congress.
“As long as I am on the chair of the Chief Minister, I promise that I will keep fighting for setting up of the units like niabats, blocks, tehsils and sub-divisions,” he declared amidst thundering applause from the massive crowd.
The CM said that a Cabinet Sub Committee (CSC) headed by Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand is currently visiting various districts to check the recommendations by S S Bloeria and Ganai Commissions to set up the new units.
Omar also charged the Congress with trying to weaken NC in Vijaypur but said the massive crowd has given a fitting reply with their presence at the rally.
“Everybody is eyeing Vijaypur. The day he (Surjeet Singh Slathia) won the elections, he has been a target of political parties. (They think) Slathia should be dislodged because he has developed close rapport with the people. But your presence in larger number here is a befitting reply to all who are trying to weaken Slathia,” he said.
Omar’s attack on the Congress on delaying setting up of new administrative units came even as he had set January 15 deadline for the CSC to submit its report. After flying to all 10 district headquarters in Jammu region, the CSC today reached Srinagar.
However, a Congress leader and Minister in the Cabinet described the Chief Minister’s stand as “politically motivated’’. Pleading anonymity, he said the Chief Minister and the National Conference was trying to gain “political mileage’’ out of the issue of administrative units while the Congress stands for complete transparency before creating the new units.
“We too want creation of new units but in a complete transparent manner. We are in a no hurry. The units should be set up after the CSC submits its report after touring the entire State,’’ the Congress leader said describing January 15 deadline as “deliberate attempt to implement Mushtaq Ganai Commission report, which was blatantly biased towards Jammu region’’.
He admitted that under no circumstances January 15 deadline on submission of report can be met with as the CSC was yet to tour 90 per cent Kashmir Valley and Ladakh and then compile the data and make recommendations.
Not ruling out showdown with Congress on the issue of creation of new administrative units, a senior National Conference leader didn’t rule out the NC vying for implementation of Bloeria and Ganai Commission reports on the new administrative units as proposed by NC’s provincial core group.
The CSC comprised seven members including three each from NC and Congress. It was headed by Deputy Chief Minister and Congress leader Tara Chand and have PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Sham Lal Sharma and Urban Development Minister Rigzin Jora, all Congress, Higher Education Minister Mohammad Akbar Lone, Planning and Development Minister Ajay Sadhotra and Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Saifullah Mir, all NC and Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir, an associate member of Congress.
Worthwhile to mention here that Ganai Commission has recommended more administrative units for Kashmir as against Jammu region.
The senior NC leader claimed that during creation of eight new districts by then Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad in 2007, the PDP was opposed to the decision but Mr Azad had unilaterally announced the new districts. He didn’t rule out the National Conference going in for unilateral decision on the administrative units if the CSC report was delayed.
The issue of former Army chief Gen VK Singh being summoned again by Legislative Council Privilege Committee headed by Congress leaders and former Minister Jugal Kishore on January 22 has also snowballed into another row between the two coalition partners especially after PCC (I) chief Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz publicly stating that he was personally opposed to the summons issued to Gen Singh when he has already replied to the charges.
Sources said the Congress leaders including those in the Privilege Committee were of the view that the NC was trying to exaggerate the issue and it should be treated as closed since Gen Singh has given his reply to Legislative Council Chairman Amrit Malhotra.
However, National Conference provincial president and member of Privilege Committee, Devender Singh Rana said: “let us not confuse retired General VK Singh with the Indian Army. He is not the Army chief. He is former Army chief. I strongly believe that the privilege motion is against an individual and so far as the Army is concerned, I feel that it is the steel frame Indian democracy and his (Gen Singh’s) statement about politicians of J&K has been strongly refuted by all living former Army chief. Some people are trying to blur those lines of distinction to create confusion, which was not required’’.
However, the senior Congress leaders of the Council including those in the Privilege Committee were of the view that the NC was again trying to gain “political mileage’’ from the issue of former Army chief and the issue should be settled when Gen Singh has given his reply to Mr Malhotra.
The Congress leaders were of the view that the issue would have been settled on January 9 had an official of the Council not refused to take the letter sent by Gen Singh. They opined that the Council official had allegedly spoken to a NC leader before refusing to take the letter.
Mr Malhotra has already ordered an inquiry into refusal of one of the Council officials to take the letter after speaking to someone on phone. The official has not been identified so far.
Protest on NH against Traffic cops’ ‘forced graft’
Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Jan 11: Drivers and operators of vehicles resorted to strong protest demonstration on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway at Ban Talab near Nagrota, after a driver of the load carrier was allegedly thrashed by Traffic Police men for denying entry (forced graft) to the ‘men in blue’ on the highway.
The level of ‘open corruption’ or ‘virtual extortion’ on the highway has reached such an alarming position, that some of the cops in ‘blue’, without any fear from the top brass, are operating unbridled, beating up drivers and vehicle operators just to mint money and share the ‘booty’ with others in the system. The incident at Ban Talab near Nagrota triggered massive protest by the drivers, cleaners and other transport operators after a load carrier driver Gafoor Khan was beaten up by an ASI and other cops of Traffic Police for denying them ‘Entry’ (illegal gratification).
The mini load-carrier No. JK14A/1650, loaded fresh vegetables, was on way to Katra Mata Vaishnodevi from Jammu. When, it reached at Ban Talab, Nagrota, the Traffic police party led by ASI Dara Singh stopped the vehicle and asked its driver to deposit “entry” (forced graft). The hapless driver, who had no sufficient money, refused to oblige the cops. The furious men in blue started showering abuses on him and also slapped him. When he objected to it, he was beaten up on the busy highway.
The hapless driver then came out on the highway, stopped his load carrier in the middle of the highway. The other drivers and vehicle operators also came out and started protest against Traffic Policemen. The SHO Nagrota reached the spot but the protesting vehicle operators refused to open the highway. They shouted slogans against the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Director General Police, IGP Traffic Muneer Ahmed Khan, DIG Traffic S A Watali and even the SP Traffic. They were demanding immediate action against the Traffic Police team deployed at Ban Talab. Later, SP Traffic Pawan Parihar reached the spot and assured action against the cops. For over two and half hours, the busy highway remained blocked and a long traffic jam was created. The traffic could be restored at around 12 noon.
IGP Traffic, Muneer Ahmed Khan when contacted said that ASI, Dara Singh of Traffic Police has been attached and inquiry ordered into the incident. He said the entire team of Traffic police has also been removed from the highway point. Another senior Traffic Police officer tried to down play the incident and claimed that driver tried to create scene there on just minor issue.
