JKLF march foiled, Malik detained

SRINAGAR, June 23: Government today foiled Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF)’s Quit Kashmir march by imposing restriction in the Civil Lines areas of Srinagar and detained JKLF chairman and its activists.
The march and shutdown called by JKLF was the part of party’s ‘Quit Kashmir’ campaign that they launched today.
Huge contingents of police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were deployed in Civil Lines areas including Lal Chowk, Budhshah Chowk, Maisuma, Gawkadal and Barbarshah to foil the march. Restrictions were also imposed in these areas.
Malik, who had gone into hiding, appeared in Maisuma along with his supporters and tried to march towards Lal Chowk. Carrying banners and placards, the protesters who were trying to march towards Lal Chowk were detained by Police. Malik’s supporters pelted stones on police men.
The JKLF leaders and activists also staged protests in Batamaloo and Makhdoom Sahab areas of city, reports said.
Meanwhile, shutdown was observed in some parts of Srinagar. Shops, commercial establishments, schools, colleges and petrol pumps remained closed. However, traffic was plying some areas.
The impact of shutdown was more in Old City areas of Srinagar where roads presented a deserted look.

PTWJ organizes workshop on ‘Maintenance of Police Vehicles’

JAMMU, June 23: Police Transport Workshop Jammu organised Orientation Workshop on “Maintenance of Police Departmental Vehicles”.
The workshop was attended by all the MTOs, MT Clerks and representatives of all District Police and different Wings of Police Department established in Jammu Province.
Ranjit Singh Sambyal, Superintendent of Police, Police Transport Workshop Jammu inaugurated the workshop.
In his inaugural address, Sambyal welcomed all the participants of different Police Establishments and briefed the participants about the motives behind organizing such workshop on awareness and maintenance of vehicles of Police Department.
Sambyal stressed upon the adoption of installation of Global Positioning System (GPS) in the Police Department vehicles which will enable fleet management functions such as fleet tracking, routing, dispatching, on-board information and security and safety to the jawans travelling in the departmental vehicles. The system will provide real-time location of all drivers of Police Departmental vehicles with great efficiency during the Law and Order duties and other VVIP/ essential duties. Moreover, Fuel Monitoring will be an another important usage of vehicle tracking to monitor the fuel through tracking device, besides, distance calculation as the tracking device will automatically calculate the distance travel by the fleet.
Sambyal also requested all the Unit heads with regard to servicing of departmental vehicles as per the service schedule already given by the concerned vehicle manufacturing companies in the service manual of the particular vehicle.

President releases first Encyclopedia on Hinduism

NEW DELHI, June 23:
The basic tenet of Hinduism is happiness, health and enlightenment for everyone, and suffering, pain and agony for none, President Pranab Mukherjee said as he received the first copy of the Encyclopedia of Hinduism today.
Speaking at a function at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President complimented Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji of the Parmarth Niketan Rishikesh, the founder-chairman of India Heritage Research Foundation (IHRF) for undertaking the effort to bring out the encyclopedia.
Hindu philosophy identifies ‘Dharma’, ‘Artha’, ‘Kama’ and ‘Moksh’ as the foremost objectives of a human being, and striking a balance in human behaviour in working towards these objectives has been prescribed as a key aim of human existence, the President said according to a statement from Shamima Siddiqui, Deputy Press Secretary to the President.
Quoting former President Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, Mukherjee said Hinduism is not just a faith, but a union of reason and intuition that cannot be defined, but is only to be experienced.
“The basic tenet of Hinduism is happiness, health and enlightenment for everyone and suffering, pain and agony for none,” he said.
Senior BJP leader and MP, L K  Advani, Law Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Water Resources Minister, Uma Bharti, Auroville Foundation Chairman, Dr Karan Singh, Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji and Director General, TERI, R K Pachauri attended the function at the auditorium of Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The Encyclopedia, a compendium of thousands of years of history, science, art, architecture, polity, religion, philosophy and culture, took 25 years to complete and is not limited to Hinduism as a religion, but provides an inclusive treatment of India’s spiritual culture, including coverage of Sikhism, Jainism and Buddhism traditions, the IHRF said. FCI employees demonstrate in support of demands

JAMMU, June 23: Under second phase of the agitation in support of their demands, the members of Food Corporation of India Executive Staff Union, State Committee J&K, today held lunch hour demonstration. The protesting FCI employees, working under the jurisdiction of Area Manager Jammu, raised slogans in support of their demands, which included implementation of transfer orders dated 1-3-2014 issued by Area Manager, relieving the staff from Mufassil Departments, release of pending over-time payment of staff, release of category-III promotion of qualified class-IV staff, release of pending pay, EL encashment etc. The protesters also demanded reshuffle of staff and Managers from DO Jammu to RO Jammu and vice-versa as well as posting of Managers in each department as most of the employees have completed more than three to ten years particularly in office. The protest demonstration was addressed by Sukh Dev Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Rattan Lal, B D Sharma, Karam Chand, Balbir Singh, Dharam Pal and Sharief Hussain who reminded that the Union has already submitted a detailed memorandum on which Regional Labour Commissioner has sought comments from FCI Management, which is silent over the issue.

Cong activists protest against scarcity of drinking water

UDHAMPUR, June 23: Agitating against scarcity of drinking water due to irregular supply in Udhampur town and adjoining Panchayats, the locals and Congress activists held a demonstration in front of PHE office, here today.
The protest demonstration was led by Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) State secretary Sumeet Magotra. The demonstrators raised slogans against PHE authorities and broke earthen pots registering their protest against the scarcity of drinking water.
While addressing the gathering, Sumeet Magotra lamented that the area was facing drinking water scarcity for the last two months due to inadequate supply while the concerned higher authorities were maintaining silence over the situation in these summer days.
He threatened a big agitation if the necessary measures are not taken well in time.   A number of Sapanchs, Panchs along with the Congress activists took part in the demonstration.

Modi Govt’s mantra ‘delay out, decision in’: Javadekar

NEW DELHI, June 23:  Union Minister Prakash Javadekar today said the Narendra Modi Government believes in the mantra “delay is out, decision is in”, and asserted that the job of the Government is not to create roadblocks but to give impetus to entrepreneurship and industry.
The Information and Broadcasting Minister, who was addressing representatives of the media and entertainment sector here, said both the government and industry should work together for the welfare of the consumers.
“There are issues of distribution, there are issues of taxation….But that is why (for) the Modi-led Government, what is the mantra? The mantra is delay is out, decision is in,” Javadekar said at an event organised by ASSOCHAM.
He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked his ministers to delete the word ‘delay’. “He has already asked us to delete the word delay. Delay word is now getting deleted,” he emphasised.
“We are here to facilitate. The Government’s role is not to create roadblocks for the industry. I believe our job is to give impetus to entrepreneurship,” said Javadekar, who also holds the portfolio of Environment and Forests Ministry.
The Minister, however, added that the welfare of the citizens has to be kept in mind.
“We, both the industry and the Government, have to think about the final consumer. Government and industry have to think about the welfare of common citizen and to that end we are partners, we are the facilitators,” he said.
Javadekar exuded confidence in the media and entertainment industry in the country saying the sector has immense opportunities. He said that the world is fascinated by our culture and Indian cinema is becoming very popular.
“Education and entertainment are the primary needs after roti, kapda and makaan (food, cloth and shelter),” Javadekar added. (PTI)

Youth our pillars of strength: Sagar

Srinagar, June 23: National Conference General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar today said that youth of J&K were its future and formed pillars of strength upon which a saga of progress and growth was being scripted under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. He was addressing party’s youth and women wing activists at Party Headquarters. Party’s Provincial President for Kashmir, Nasir Aslam Wani, Women’s Wing President Shameema Firdous, Youth President Salman Ali Sagar and various senior leaders of the party were also present.
Addressing the Provincial Committee, District Presidents and activists of Youth National Conference, Ali Mohammad Sagar said the Omar Abdullah Government was a youth-centric Government that had firm conviction in the capability of our youth to usher J&K into an era of nation-building and prosperity. The NC General Secretary said that the role of youth and an elaborate vision for their growth was penned down in the National Conference vision document ‘Naya Kashmir’ and it was none other than Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah who gave youth a space and opportunity to serve their people through constructive and youth-centric politics.
Addressing the party’s Women’s Wing, he said that women play a vital role in the social, academic, cultural and economic progress of a nation and National Conference was proud to have a robust, vital Women’s Wing that has strengthened the party at the grassroots level at every crucial juncture.
The NC General Secretary said that Madar-e-Meharbaan Begum Akbar Jehan was a role-model for the women of State as her vision for their emancipation and education had guided thousands of young girls and women towards prosperity and progress.
All district presidents and office bearers of the NC Women’s Wing reiterated their resolve and commitment to ensure a resounding victory for National Conference in the forthcoming Assembly elections.

DLRC meeting held at Samba

SAMBA, June 23: A meeting of bankers and District/Sectoral Officers was held to review the progress and performance of banks in key areas relating to deposits/advances and priority sector lending for the quarter ending March 2014. District Development Commissioner, Samba RK Varma while chairing the meeting had a detailed and threadbare review of progress achieved in sponsoring the cases by various departments like DRDA, KVIB, KVIC, DIC, Employment, SC/ST/OBC Corporation, Agriculture, Animal/Sheep Husbandry etc. under various schemes like SGSY, SGSRY, JKSSES, PMEGP. It was informed that the deposit and advances of banks as on ending March 2014 stood at Rs 2223.96 Crore and Rs 1210.10 Crore respectively, thus achieving a CD ratio of 54.41 %. Further, District has achieved 74.92% of target under total Annual credit Plan for the year 2013-14. The Lead Bank Manager, B.M. Sharma while giving a detailed account of the performance of Banks during the quarter informed that the progress under priority sectors, weaker sections and credit flow to women beneficiaries has been above the RBI stipulations. The house was informed that against the bench mark of 40% under priority sector advances, the banks have comfortably achieved 52.58% during the quarter. The achievement under advances to weaker sections of the society was 18% against the national goal of 10% and 5.27% to women beneficiaries against national goal of 5%. The DDC appreciated the efforts of banks and Agriculture Department for issuance of 29313 Kissan Credit Cards to eligible farmers. He instructed the Agriculture Department and banks to clear the backlog and ensure that all eligible farmers are covered under the scheme. He also urged upon the bankers to disburse credit under the KCC scheme. The DDC while speaking on the occasion advised the sponsoring agencies to conduct the awareness camps in the villages especially in far flung and border areas to expand their orbit so that more and more people are educated, motivated and facilitated to initiate self employment enterprises. Surinder Singh, DDM NABARD apprised the house that NABARD had sanctioned a watershed development project in the district. He also discussed about the Dairy Entrepreneur Development Scheme and farmers club programme of NABARD and urged upon the bankers and the government departments to utilize these forums for propagating their scheme. SK Wattal, Lead District Officer, Reserve bank of India stressed upon covering the unbanked areas of the district through bank branches or BC/BF model. Later, the DDC also reviewed the progress of SBI RSETI during the Local Advisory Committee meeting.

GREF employee arrested for eve-teasing

JAMMU, June 23: GREF employee was arrested for eve-teasing women at Jindrah-Domail main chowk, falling under the jurisdiction of Jhajjar Kotli police station.
As per police sources, GREF employee namely Preet Pal Singh, son of Labh Singh of Pathankot, presently at 1623 Pioneer Company Suketar was found indulged in obscene acts at Jindrah-Domail main chowk.
Some passerby informed the police, who rushed to the spot and arrested the GREF employee.
A case under FIR number 77/14 under Section 294 RPC has been registered against the accused at police station Jhajjar Kotli and investigation started.

IOA to unveil National Games schedule this week

Thiruvananthapuram, June 23:
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is set to announce the schedule of the 35th National Games on Thursday.
President of IOA, N Ramachandran, would announce the dates of the event at a special function in the Lembers’ Lounge of the Kerala Assembly on June 26, state Information Minister K C Joseph and former DGO and organising committee secretary general Jacon Punnose said here today.
The 35th National Games will be held in Kerala early next year.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs Sarbananda Sonowal, state Sports Minister Thiruvananchur Radhakrishnan, Kerala Assembly Speaker G Karthikeyan and Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan would attend the function.
Though the state had proposed mid-January as the tentative schedule for the event, it was for the IOA to take the final call and unveil the games’ schedule, Punnose said duringan interaction with the journalists here.
The event would be held in 32 venues spread around seven districts, though more than 50 per cent of the event would take place in the state capital and suburbs, he said.
The development of stadia and other infrastructure for the event was in final stages of completion, he said.
It is after a quarter century that the National Games is coming to Kerala as the state last hosted the event way back in 1987.
The whole event has been planned in an eco-friendly manner and so great emphasis would be made on its conduct without causing any harm to the environment, Punnose added. (PTI)
