US condemns ‘massacre’ in Iraq’s Tikrit as horrifying

WASHINGTON, June 16:  The US has condemned the reports of massacre of 1700 Iraqi Shia air force recruits in Tikrit by Islamic terrorists as “horrifying” and urged all Iraqis to unite against this violence, the State Department has said.
“The claim by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) that it has massacred 1,700 Iraqi Shia air force recruits in Tikrit is horrifying and a true depiction of the bloodlust that these terrorists represent,” State Department Spokesperson, Jen Psaki, said.
The US condemns these tactics in the strongest possible terms and stand in solidarity with the Iraqi people against these horrendous and senseless acts of violence, she said.
“While we cannot confirm these reports, one of the primary goals of ISIL is to set fear into the hearts of all Iraqis and drive sectarian division among its people,” Psaki said.
Terrorists who can commit such heinous acts are a shared enemy of the US, Iraq, and the international community, Psaki said.
“This underscores the need for Iraqi leaders from across the political spectrum to take steps that will unify the country in the face of this threat,” she said, adding the US will do its part to help Iraq move beyond this crisis.
The US urges all Iraqis to unite against this violence and continue to reject the path of hatred that ISIL represents, she said.
“The United States strongly supports Iraq and its people as they face security challenges from violent extremists.
The people of Iraq have repeatedly rejected violent extremism and expressed their desire to build a better society for themselves and for their children,” Psaki said. (PTI)

Egypt jails killers of Coptic Christians

CAIRO, June 16:  A court in Egypt jailed three people for life and two to seven years for creating a “terrorist” group and killing four Copts in 2010, a judicial official said.
Another was sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison, while a further 19 defendants were acquitted, the same source said yesterday.
They were accused of “forming an illegal group and using terrorist methods to target the police, foreign tourists and the Copts”.
The four Coptic Christians — who comprise up to 10 per cent of Egypt’s mainly Muslim population — were killed in January 2010 in an attack on a jewellery shop in an eastern suburb of Cairo.
Several more people were injured in the attack.
The Copts are the Middle East’s largest religious minority, and have long suffered sectarian violence including attacks on churches. (AGENCIES)

A laudable decision

Sir,
The decision of the State Government to give five year service benefit to 55,000 RET teachers of the State is more than welcome. The step is surely going to make teaching profession  and service conditions more attractive. The terms and conditions which were framed for recruitment were harsh and unjustified. The RET teachers suffered a lot because of them.
These teachers struggled a lot to convince the authorities about the harshness of these rules governing the service conditions.  At times teachers RETs had to bear the heavy handedness of police.
The RET scheme which was launched in 2005 with the objective of creating employment opportunities was criticised for non-inclusion of first five years of service for promotion and non-transferable posting.
The decision of the State Government marks the end of the painful struggle. Now, the ball is in  the court of these teachers. They have to work sincerely to achieve the educational objectives  set by the Education Department.
The Government has done its job by conceding the demands, and now it is upto the teachers how they would promote the cause of education.
Yours etc…

Of Power cuts and politicians

Sir,
Those politicians of the State who keep on counting the world class (as they say) achievements of their respective Governments since fifties, should experience the joy of one of such achievements made in the power sector, by joining South Gandhi Nagar & adjoining areas people of this winter capital. If they don’t have the time to join us, they should atleast try to know as to who is responsible for inflicting and enjoying the miseries of the people of this area during May, June & July every year by enforcing ten to twelve hours power cuts during the day time & more during the nights.
If they don’t have any answer to this very very serious problem, as the sufferers have been given to understand, even after using & abusing the liberal central funding meant for the purpose, during the last about six decades, in that case they (Hon’ble Rahnumas) should change their profession or otherwise should try to see some shots of the film written, acted & directed by the electorate of India during the recently concluded Parliament elections. The famous Urdu poet Akbar Allahabadi had once said:
Khate hain roz dinner Hukkam Ke Sath
Ranj leader Ko bahut hai magar Aaram ke Sath
