Ian Thorpe reveals he is gay in interview

Sydney, July 13:

Five-time Olympic swimming gold medalist Ian Thorpe for the first time publicly confirmed that he is gay during a television interview today, ending years of speculation about his sexuality.

Thorpe, who had long denied that he was gay, told British talk show host Michael Parkinson in an interview broadcast on Australia’s Channel 10 that he just recently realized the truth about himself.

“I’m not straight,” Thorpe said. “And this is only something that very recently — we’re talking in the past two weeks — I’ve been comfortable telling the closest people around me exactly that.”

For years, Thorpe took great pains to hide his sexuality. In his 2012 autobiography, “This Is Me,” Thorpe wrote, “For the record, I am not gay and all of my sexual experiences have been straight. I’m attracted to women, I love children, and aspire to have a family one day.”

Thorpe, 31, said being asked about his sexuality by journalists when he was just a teenager forced him to adopt a defensive attitude toward the issue. He was too young to know whether he was gay or straight, and said he responded that he was straight to avoid teasing from classmates. Things spiraled from there.

“I felt the lie had become so big that I didn’t want people to question my integrity,” he said. “And a little bit of ego comes into this; I didn’t want people to question … have I lied about everything?”

Now, he says, he wishes he had come out sooner.

“I’m comfortable saying I’m a gay man,” he said. “And I don’t want young people to feel the same way that I did. You can grow up, you can be comfortable and you can be gay.” Part of his reluctance to come out, he said, was fear of letting his family and his fans down.

“I wanted to make my family proud. I wanted to make my nation proud of me. And part of me didn’t know if Australia wanted its champion to be gay,” he said. “But I’m telling not only Australia, but I’m telling the world, that I am.”

Thorpe added that he is looking forward to living his life openly, without the burden of carrying a secret. He wants to find a partner, he said, and start a family.

Thorpe retired from swimming in 2012 after winning five Olympic gold medals, three silvers, and one bronze, and setting 22 world records. (Agencies)

The Netherlands blank Brazil 3-0 in play-off

Brasilia, July 13:

Brazil lost its face, its pride one more time in the space of four days after the Netherlands embarrassed the hosts 3-0 in the third-place play-off match of the World Cup, as boos and jeers from the fans dressed in canary yellow reverberated across the Estadio Nacional here.

Coming off the devastating 7-1 hammering to Germany in the semifinals, the humiliation for the hosts was complete on the eve of the grand finale.

Captain Robin van Persie (3rd minute), Daley Blind (17th) and Georginio Wijnaldum (90+1) found the target for the Netherlands, the result only adding to the already gloomy mood of thousands of home fans as they left the stadium deeply dejected.

Van Persie started the scoring for the Netherlands after he converted from the spot barely few minutes into the game.

Arjen Robben was the one credited with getting the Netherlands the penalty after he was pulled by host skipper Thiago Silva, who returned after missing the German massacre due to double bookings.

The Manchester United player calmly slotted in the ball, high above Julio Cesar’s dive. This was van Persie’s fourth goal in six appearances in the ongoing tournament.

There was though a hint of doubt over if Robben was dragged inside the box.

Lack of discretion on part of stopper David Luiz, who is headed for Paris Saint-Germain FC on a world record 50 million pound, led to the second goal.

In what turned out to be a horrible piece of defending, Luiz’s feeble header from a cross landed on the path of Daley Blind, who promptly volleyed it in to make the scoreline 2-0 for the Oranje, in the process scoring his maiden international goal.

Wijnaldum added to the home team’s woes when he successfully launched his right-footer into the net in the added time.

Oscar looked to be the most impressive Brazilian player on the field and embarked on a mazy run before launching into a shot from the edge of the box, but Jasper Cillessen was equal to the task at the post. (PTI)

It was a good Test match for us, says Dhoni

Nottingham, July 13:

Calling the stalemate here a “good Test match” for his team, Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today singled out Stuart Binny as one who could fill in the seaming all-rounder’s slot in the near future.

Binny struck a match-saving 78 on his debut as India overcame some anxious moments to manage a draw in the first cricket Test against England.

“Overall there was a lot of positives for us. We needed a partnership this morning and we got it. It was a good Test match for us, we managed to put pressure on them and then we held up well when we were under pressure,” Dhoni said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Binny made a mark with a memorable performance as he not only pulled India out of the woods but also took his side to a lead of more than 300 runs to shut the door on England at Trent Bridge.

And Dhoni said: “We haven’t had a seaming allrounder but Stuart Binny can be someone who can really contribute for us in the future.”

He had no regrets about leaving out Ravichandran Ashwin from the playing XI.

“I don’t regret not playing R Ashwin because there was no help for the spinner. We had good combinations and I was happy with the bowling attack. I don’t think I could have changed much when (Joe) Root and (Jimmy) Anderson were going, we tried a few things but the ball got soft and the bowlers go tired and I don’t think there was much else we could have done.”

Root and Andreson shared a world-record 10th wicket partnership to bail England out of a precarious situation yesterday.

“A lot of youngsters have played really well. We wanted to see what kind of fight they are putting in and we’re pleased,” Dhoni said.

England captain Alastair Cook was full of praise for Root, who notched up a big century in the hosts’ first innings.

“In this game we had a poor session, losing six wickets on a really good pitch. Thankfully we got out of it. Joe Root has come back really well, leading the time and marshalling those partnerships,” Cook said. (PTI)

Civil services aspirants demand change in syllabus

NEW DELHI, July 13:
Scores of civil services aspirants have demanded that the syllabus for UPSC examinations to select IAS, IFS, and IPS officers be changed to give level-playing field to those coming from rural areas.
“There is a need to change second paper of Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination which is known as Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT II), as it makes it difficult for people coming from rural areas of Hindi-speaking states to crack this examination,” said Sampoornanand, a native of Bihar.
The CSAT-II paper carries questions on comprehension, interpersonal skills including communication skills, logical reasoning and analytical ability, decision making and problem solving, general mental ability, basic numeracy, and English language comprehension skills (of Class X level).
“The questions asked in English language comprehension skills are asked in English and no Hindi translation is provided. We find it difficult to understand them. Questions asked are also much above the level of Class X. We want it to be changed. In fact the pattern of CSAT is beneficial for students of science background,” he claimed.
The civil services examination is conducted in three stages — preliminary, main, and interview. There are two compulsory papers of 200 marks each in the preliminary examination. This is also known as CSAT I and CSAT II.
A group of students had carried out protests in Mukherjee Nagar and other areas of the national capital in support of their demand. They want the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to postpone the civil services (preliminary) examination 2014 scheduled to be held on August 24.
“Most of the students have been protesting against the pattern. We want UPSC and the Government to intervene in the matter and postpone the date of preliminary examination,” said Jitendra, another civil services aspirant.
The issue was also raised in Parliament recently by SP’s Dharmendra Yadav and BJP’s Yogi Adityanath. Adityanath had demanded that CSAT examination be brought to an end as it is difficult for Hindi-speaking students coming from rural areas. (PTI)

Gill wins Rally of Coimbatore

     Coimbatore, July 13:

Overnight leaders Gaurav Gill and Musa Sherif, in a Mahindra XUV 500, today won the JK Tyre-powered Rally of Coimbatore, the second round of the FMSCI-Indian Rally Championship (IRC), by over two minutes.

Karnataka’s Arjun Rao and Satish Rajagopal, in a VW Polo, bagged the second place overall and the top spot in the IRC 1600 category, while reigning Asia Pacific champion Gill’s Mahindra Adventure teammates Sunny Sidhu and P V Srinivas Murthy were third.

During the run over the two Special Stages of 26.10 kms and 12.65 kms in Leg 2, Gill, winner of the opening round in Nashik last month, chose to drive cautiously.

“I didn’t want to take any risks as I already had a good lead overnight,” Gill said.

“I wanted to hold on to the lead and it just so happened that I was fastest in both the stages today,” added India’s top rally driver.

While the top three overnight leaders finished in that order, Team Yokohama’s Vikram Devadasen and Shrikanth, in a VW Polo, turned in faster times in both Super Stages to finish fourth overall ahead of their Team Yokohama mates Rahul Kantharaj and Vivek Bhatt in a Mitsubishi Cedia.

B Raghu Nandan and K Suraj topped the FMSCI 1600cc Cup category.

Yesterday, 10 cars retired during leg one, including reigning National champion Amittrajit Ghosh and Ashwin Naik following mechanical problems. (PTI)

Budget only beginning, I did whatever I could do: Jaitley

NEW DELHI, July 13:
Brushing aside criticism of not having done enough reforms in the Budget, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said this was the beginning of the journey and he did all he could do under the given circumstances.
“This is the beginning of our journey, not the end. Abhi hum jitna kar sakte the, humne utna kiya hai (Whatever I could do now, I have done). And all the decisions are not taken on day one,” Jaitley told.
Jaitley, who presented his maiden Budget on July 10, is being criticised, especially by rating agencies, for not repealing the retrospective tax amendment and not providing enough sops for the industry.
The Minister, however, has provided relief to the salary earners by sacrificing Rs 22,200 crore in direct taxes.
Refuting the criticism, he said the Government has taken important steps which are necessary but not taken in the past 10 years.
“Each one of those major issues, whether it is insurance or real estate, defence, retrospective tax, simplification of tax administration, transfer pricing (were important). So in 45 days, we have tried to address each one of them and then we have given impetus to the manufacturing sector.
“These are important decisions. Our Government is very clear in some sector you got to give more relief. Aam aadmi par aap kitna bojh denge? (How much can we burden the common man?). So, that is why we tried to rationalise individual taxation. We have also removed inverted duty structures,” Jaitley said.
The Budget has proposed increasing the income tax exemption limit to Rs 2.50 lakh from Rs 2 lakh and raised the ceiling on investment in saving instruments to Rs 1.5 lakh from Rs 1 lakh per annum.
On criticism of Budget not having a detailed roadmap for fiscal consolidation, Jaitley said: “I have not spelt it out in details because I have provided for Expenditure Management Commission and if anybody feels that in 45 days you can come out with the scheme of rationalisation of subsidies to which people in the last 66 years have not found an answer, we must rate the agencies then.”
He said that there are two ways of reducing fiscal deficit — either you spend less or you earn more.
“The ideal situation is that you should earn more because if you spend less then you are contracting expenditure and you may end up contracting some parts of the economy… I have looked at unresolved issues that they (UPA Government) left behind or the problems they have left behind,” he said, adding in the period of 45 days he has tried to address most of these problems.
The Budget proposed restricting fiscal deficit this year to 4.1 per cent of GDP and bring it down to 3 per cent by 2016-17. This is in line with the roadmap laid out by the UPA Government.
Later in an interview to Karan Thapar for ‘Headlines Today’, Jaitley said the two challenges he faces in achieving the “daunting” fiscal deficit target of 4.1 per cent in 2014-15 is monsoon and global oil prices, which are outside the control of Government.
“It (monsoon failure) will affect us…We are cautious about it. Therefore, when I said I accepted 4.1 per cent, I knew it’s a daunting challenge, so I have not said that I will achieve it. I will take up the challenge and I will endeavour to achieve it,” he said.
“At the moment, oil prices are moderating. I can’t predict what will happen 15 days from now. As far as monsoon is concerned, it’s too early to write it off completely. So let’s wait for a couple weeks. Even if we have weak monsoon, India has lots of food stock,” he said.
Improving investor sentiment will spur manufacturing and tax buoyancy, he said.
“My challenge for 4.1 per cent is that either I cut down my expenditure as my predecessor did or I let the growth rate go up so that economic activity expands,” he said.
“I am consciously choosing the latter and therefore I am trying to improve the investment environment in the country. I am trying to improve environment under which manufacturing can grow and if we grow in those areas and achieve a certain level of growth then tax buoyancy would take us to a situation where we can perhaps achieve 4.1 per cent,” he said.
The Finance Minister said that he is confident of going back to 8 per cent growth during his tenure.
“I have indicated that the intention is over next 2-3 year to get back to the (high growth path) road…I hope 8 per cent growth would happen in this tenure. I am reasonably confident,” he said.
The growth rate in the past two financial years have slipped to sub-5 per cent.
On reforms, he said the Government would take up those issues first which are easy to be implemented.
“There is no point in solving the UPA policy on multi-brand retail….You start with a reform knowing fully well that roadblocks are likely to be created. You reform those areas which are very easy and possible….,” he said. (PTI)

‘Amazon India entry has raised the consolidation pace in eCom’

NEW DELHI, July 13:  Entry of e-commerce giant Amazon in the Indian market in June last year has not only spurred heightened competition, but has also increased the pace of consolidation in the USD 2.3 billion e-tailing market, a report said.
According to report by consulting firm Technopak, the sector could witness mergers or acquisitions between firms with same investors, while niche and specialty players could be acquired by larger firms.
The report says that Amazon’s entry in the e-commerce market is a development worth noting.
“The global leader is expected to vie for the top slot in India as well, which has triggered an increased urgency and competitiveness within the sector.
“As a result, there has been a significant increase in the investments that are being injected as well as the speed of consolidation,” it said in a report.
According the report by the firm, although Indian online retail (e-tailing) market is still a small contributor to retail, accounting for only 0.4 per cent of the overall market, it is on a rapid growth trajectory.
The USD 2.3 billion e-tailing market in 2014 is expected to reach 3 per cent of Indian retail (USD 32 billion by 2020).
“Going forward, the consolidation process will continue. Players sharing common investors will increasingly look at mergers/acquisitions, while niche and specialty players possessing unique positioning, assets or capabilities will attract acquisition by the bigger players,” Technopak said.
In May this year, marking the biggest consolidation in the e-commerce space in India, homegrown e-retailer Flipkart acquired online fashion retailer Myntra in an estimated Rs 2,000 crore deal.
Technopak said that investors have reaffirmed their faith in this sector by continuing to invest large amount of capital as a result of which an entirely new sector has emerged.
“Indian e-commerce (of which e-tailing is a part) has attracted a total funding of USD 1.6 billion across over 140 deals since 2012,” the report said.
As of May 2014, the sector witnessed 20 deals worth USD 637 million compared to 60 deals worth USD 592 million in the entire 2013. In 2012 the sector saw investors pouring in USD 371 million for a total of 73 deals. (PTI)

FCI starts maize procurement in Bihar to ensure MSP to farmers

NEW DELHI, July 13:  Concerned over farmers in Bihar selling maize below the MSP, Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan today said Food Corporation of India (FCI) has been asked to procure the cereal crop at the support price in the state.
Currently, FCI is procuring maize in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chattisgarh.
“Against the maize MSP of Rs 1,310 per quintal, farmers in Bihar are getting only Rs 900 per quintal. To protect the interest of farmers, we have begun maize procurement via FCI in the state,” Paswan told PTI.
About 16 procurement centres of FCI have been opened for undertaking maize procurement in nine districts — Khagaria, Purnea, Madhepura, Bhagalpur, Chapra, Vaishali, Motihar, Bettiah and Jamui, he added.
Paswan further said that the Bihar government could have initiated maize procurement on its own after knowing their farmers are being deprived of the basic MSP.
“The current policy permits state governments to initiate MSP operations for coarse cereals. Some states are doing this,” he said, while noting that the Bihar government has sought the Centre’s intervention at the fag end of maize procurement season.
Maize MSP stands at Rs 1,310 per quintal for this year. FCI, which normally procures wheat and rice in big way, has purchased about 12.15 lakh tonnes of maize from five states so far in the ongoing 2013-14 season, as per the official data.
Last year, FCI’s total maize buy was only 2,243 tonnes.
Bihar with an annual production of around 27-28 lakh tonnes is the second biggest maize producer in the country. It has 6.85 lakh hectares under this crop.
Maize is not a staple food in Bihar. Quality maize is grown thrice a year during autumn and in rabi and kharif seasons. (PTI)
