Animal Festivals

Maneka Sanjay Gandhi
Last time I wrote about the so called festivals in India which are simply excuses for killing. But for every travesty of an animal based festival, we have good ones as well. Fairly good ones, because even though the animal is central to the festival, our worship is largely symbolic now.
The Ahoi Ashtami is a fast observed by mothers for the well-being of their sons during the month ofKarthik (October –November).
The story of Ahoi Ashtami relates to a woman with seven sons. She went to the forest to bring soil and her implement fell on an animal den and killed a cub. Over the next year, her sevensons died and she felt it was a result of what happened with the cub. As atonement for her sin, she offered prayers to the goddess Ashtami Bhagawati by sketching the face of the cub. She eventually got back all hersonsby the power of her prayer and ever since it becomes a ritual to worship the goddess every year. Mothers fast and pray for their children.
The picture of Ahoi Mata is painted on a wall and a bowl of water is placed near it. A red thread is wrapped around the bowl of water and the edges are smeared with turmeric powder. The story of Ahoi Mata is read out. All thewomen sit down to listen to the story. The fast ends in the evening when the moon appears.
The snake is worshippedin small temples called Kavus in Kerala. The temple of Nagaraja at Mannarashala is one of the important snake temples in Kerala. Couples without children hang small cradles in trees near the temple. On snake festivals, floor drawings called `Kalams’, with coloured powders and cowdungare made ofserpent gods. A priest consecrates the drawings, followed by dance and music and a recitation.
Elephants unfortunately have not done very well in elephant festivals. They are worshipped in every temple in Kerala but treated really badly. The elephant festivals have degenerated into farces where they are made to walk miles in the heat, kept standing while loud devotional music is played and decorated with heavy howdahs and smeared with colour. Many of them go mad during this torture.
Ganesha Chaturthi, mainly in Maharashtra, celebrates the birth ofLord Ganesha, the elephant headed God. It is observed during theHindu monthof Bhadra (August -September) and lasts for 10 days. A clay model of Lord Ganesha is placed on raised platforms in homes or in decorated outdoor tents. The priest, clad in red silk dhoti and shawl, invokes life into the idol amidst the chanting of mantras. Coconut, jaggery, rice sweets called modakas, grass and red flowers are offered. The idol is anointed with red unguent or sandal paste. Vedic hymns are chanted. On the 11th day, the image is taken through the streets in a procession, accompanied with dance and song, to be immersed in a river or the sea symbolizing a ritual see-off of the Lord in his journey towards his abode in Kailash while taking away with him the misfortunes of all man.
Cow festivals abound.
Pongal, theharvest festival of Tamil Nadu is incomplete without the presence of cows. The third day of Pongal is allocated to cows. It is called the Mattu Pongal. Cows are adorned with kum kum and their horns are painted. Women from every family feed them sweets.
The day before Diwali is Govardhan puja or the festival of cow dung. On this day, cow dung is the deity who is offered vegetables and money.
On Shivaratri, women pay their respects to Shiva’s bull Nandi before going to the God.
Bachchabaras is a ritual observed in North India in the Bhadrapad month – this year it isAugust 22nd. The ritual is observed for the wellbeing of children. A cow and calf are worshipped. The cow is given ghee, rice, milk and delicacies made from millet. Millets is also given in charity to the poor.
Gopashtami is celebrated in the Kartik month (October – November). On this day Krishna lifted the Govardhan hill to save the people of Braj from the rage of Indra. People clean the cowsheds and bathe the cows and calves. They are given special food, decorated and worshipped. Gopashtami is similar to Govatsa Dwadashi festival celebrated in Maharashtra in the month of Pousha. During the festival acow and a calf are worshipped. Celibacy is observed and the worshipper sleeps on the bare floor. Cows are fed and the worshipper lives on milk and uses no salt. Goshpada tritiya Vrata is celebrated in the month of Bhadrapada. Cows are worshipped. Oil, salt and all cooked food is prohibited.
Bahula Chaturthi is also celebrated in the month of Bhadrapad. Mothers keep a fast for their sons.Actually this is a festival to celebrate promise keeping. No milk is drunk on this day. The cow keeps it all for her calf. The women fast the whole day and in the evening worship cows and then hear the story of Bahula before eating. Bahula was the child of the wish fulfilling cow Kamdhenu. Lord Shri Krishna wanted to test her commitment to him so he came in the form of a hungry lion and asked to eat her. Bahula promised the lion that she would come back tobe eaten up once she fed her calf. Bahula went home, fed her calf and then came back to the lion who then revealed himself as Krishna.
Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth ofHanuman, the monkey god, on the full moon day during the month ofChaitra. Devotees visit temples and applysindoorto their foreheads from Hanuman’s idol as Hanuman himself was of that colour. On this day spiritual discourses are started at dawn in the Hanuman temples. In Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated in the month of Margazhi (Dec-Jan). InOdisha, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on the first day of Vaisakha (April 14or 15) as New Year for allOriyas. The officiating priest bathes the idol and offers special prayers to the gods. Then the entire body is smeared with sindoor and oil. The story goes that when Sita was applying sindoor to her hair, Hanuman asked her why. She replied that by applying sindoor, she ensured a long life for her husband, Rama. Hanuman then smeared his entire body with sindoor, in an effort to ensure Rama’s immortality. Hence Hanuman’s idol is daubed with sindoor. People offer sweets and fruit, especially bananas, to the god and to monkeys all over. Men also fast from morning till evening in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Tents are erected in front of Hanuman temples where people congregate to listen to recitations of the Hanuman Chalisa.
Kurma Jayanti on Vaishakh Purnima –May 14ththis year- celebrates the birth of the tortoise, the second incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Pujas are done on this day in Vishnu temples.
Hayagriva, the horse, is also considered anavatarofVishnu. His festival is on the day of the full moon in August (Srava?a-Paur?ami) and on Mahanavami, the ninth day of the Navaratrifestival.
Sri Matsya Narayana Temple in Karnataka is dedicated to Sri Matsya Narayana Swamy.Matsyais the fish incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The festival of Matsya Jayanti is celebrated on the third day of the waxing moon of the Chaitra month (March- April)) every year.
Ancient Indians had recognized the animals’ right to co-exist with man and therefore they were loved, nurtured and worshipped. In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna compares the world to a single banyan tree with unlimited branches in which all the species of animals, humans and gods wander. We forget only at our own peril.

Day 1
Body Massage: Apply warm sesame seed (til) oil or olive oil on the body and massage it on the skin. Pay special attention to elbows and knees. Use circular strokes on the shoulders, elbows and wrists. Stroke down the muscles of the inner arms and then upwards on the back of the arms, in a smooth movement. Using the palms of the hands, massage in large circles over the whole front of the body, moving upwards and outwards from the centre. Use circular strokes for the abdomen. Apply oil to the whole leg, stroking upwards. Using both hands, one on the inside and one outside, massage down the front of the legs, from knee to ankle and then upwards at the back of the legs, from ankle to back of knees.
Body Pack: Mix ripe papaya pulp with two parts honey, two parts yogurt, two parts powdered dried orange and lemon peel and 3 parts oats. Apply on body and wash it off after half an hour. Mix liquid ingredients gradually, to get the right consistency.
Day 2
Shampoo : Select a mild herbal shampoo, according to your hair type. Oily hair may be washed three times a week. In hot and humid weather, wash more often. For dry hair, wash twice a week.
Wet hair thoroughly. Apply the shampoo and use your fingertips to rub it lightly into the scalp and hair. Work up lather. Rinse the hair by running plenty of water through the hair.
After washing the hair, avoid rubbing with a towel. Wrap your towel around the head for a few minutes to soak up moisture. Avoid brushing wet hair. It can cause the hair to stretch and break. Use a wide toothed comb, to comb out the tangles, starting from the ends and going upwards towards the scalp.
Day 3
Face Pack: Mix cucumber and papaya pulp with one teaspoon curd, one teaspoon honey, 4 teaspoons oats and one teaspoon fresh tomato paste. Apply on face and neck and wash it off after half an hour.
Beauty Bath
Beauty Bundle for Bath: An ideal way of using natural ingredients is to tie ingredients in a clean cloth, wet slightly and then rub the cloth bag on the skin. You can use besan, oats, dry and ground mint leaves, rose petals, almond meal, a little turmeric powder.
Day 4.
Hair Care: Nourishing: Take two teaspoons pure glycerin, one tablespoon sesame seed (til) oil and one egg yolk. Mix together and apply on the hair. Apply on the ends too. Wear a plastic shower cap and leave on for an hour before washing the hair.
Day 5.
Skin Care : Mix together two teaspoons honey, a little milk and rose water, dried and powdered lemon peels into a paste. Apply on face and neck. Wash it off after 20 minutes.
Hair Care: Mix some water with creamy hair conditioner and put it in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture on the hair. Then comb the hair, so that it spreads through the hair. Helps dry hair.
Day 6
Cooling Face Pack: Mix Cucumber juice (or pulp) with two teaspoons powdered milk and one egg white on face and neck and rinse off with water after half an hour. It will also help to remove tan.
For Hands: Take lemon juice and coarse sugar (large grains). Mix them just before use. Apply on the hands and rub gently till the sugar dissolves. Leave on for 5 minutes and wash off with water. Take fresh orange peels, pierce them with a fork. Rub the peels on the hands to brighten them.
Day 7
Eye Care: For dull and tired eyes, dip cotton wool pads in rose water and use as eye pads over closed lids. Lie down and relax for 10 minutes. It helps to remove fatigue and brighten the eyes. The fragrance of rose has a calming effect on the mind.
Hair Care : To prevent dandruff and lice infestations, soak Fenugreek (methi) seeds in water overnight. Next morning, make a paste of the seeds, add a little olive oil and apply on the scalp. Leave on for 20 to 30 minutes and then wash hair. The water can also be used to rinse the hair.

Inner Voice

RAKHI

Rakhi is an occasion when sister is proud
Protection promise gets from brother
To express love she ties colourful thread
Brother feels proud of affection
Earth could not resist occasion
She spreads colourful rainbow on sky
To bind wrist of sky
Both feel proud of each other
Earth gets promise from sky for care
From scorching heat and flood of rains
Cool breeze with full food bowl
Freedom for birds to chrip and fly
Brother on earth promised
Protection from all evils
Comes to rescue on call
Tie colourful Rakhi every year
Eyes of sister get flooded with tears
Tears of love and affection
She gets secured of worldy evils
She blesses silently from heart
Brother gets the silent message
Tears of love occupied space
In eyes of both sister & brother
Both parted in tears
With shower of blessings
Message was silent with smile
Both understood with deep sigh.

FEELING REELING
IN THE HEART

Words can’t express all our feelings
Which, in our hearts are ever reeling
Those dwell in my such loving heart
For you, that has grown so much smart
Though, time for others never waits
For anyone, even for the closest mates
But love is that candle that ever shines
Makes short poems with beautiful rhymes
May your future, health, good luck thrive
For you the happiness may all life survive

RAKSHA BANDHAN

Bandhan is not just a word of seven letters
It encircles the love of whole world

A festival of love and care ,
Isn’t it astonishing ,
That a piece of thread keeps us near
Few ties are soo deep and profound
And with soo much affection
A thread is abound
Happiness in our hearts and faces glow
Streams of joy and peace are in flow
Its a thread that binds two souls
In abound of joy forever,
No matter how farther we are,
It brings happy days together
It grows continously as we grow,
A day whose value we know,
Many things siblings share ,
And this is nurtured with parent’s care,
I wish it comes with happiness
Prosperity and joy every year.

BEING YOU

Accept yourself
That’s all that I can say
Let your inner voice tell you
The way to live your day
Do not be hard upon yourself
That never did no good
Just be happy, never worry
It’s foolish that one should.
Love yourself
Cause you’re a one off too
No one else can play your part
Nobody can be you
It’s a lovely world we live in
Let it seep into your soul
Then when you feel at one with life
Twill get you feeling whole.
Most people call me crazy
But I love being me
I do not care what others think
I only like to be
To be this way, it is my right
A gift sent down by fate
I’m so I’m happy being me
Each day to me is great.

An interesting news-piece highlighted the fact that an increasing number of pet owners are providing provisions for their pets in their wills. The write-up focused on some of the world’s richest animal heirs, which included a Pooch, Labrador, Bull Terrier, Chihuahua, Ragdoll Cat… even a Chimpanzee.
The West has attempted films on pets inheriting the wealth of their deceased master. Recall films like THE RICHEST CAT IN THE WORLD [1986] or THE DUKE [1999]. A number of dream merchants in Bollywood have explored the man-animal relationship in films — HAATHI MERE SAATHI, TERI MEHERBANIYAN or the more recent YEH HAI BAKRAPUR. ENTERTAINMENT is, perhaps, the first Hindi film that depicts the dog as the heir to his deceased master’s riches.
What makes ENTERTAINMENT attention-grabbing — besides its distinctive storyline — is the fact that it is helmed by Sajid-Farhad, who have penned several laughathons in the past. Naturally, one expects their directorial debut to be a rib-tickling entertainer. There’s one more reason — Akshay Kumar. The actor, synonymous with comedies, has a terrific comic timing and with a title like ENTERTAINMENT, the film ought to live up to those lofty expectations, right? Does ENTERTAINMENT hit the right notes? Let’s find out!
First, the premise! Akhil [Akshay Kumar] struggles to make ends meet by doing petty jobs. He does all this to support his ailing father [Darshan Jariwala], who has been hospitalized. Akhil gets a jolt when he overhears his father telling the nurse that Akhil is not his son. That’s not all, for he also gets to know that the wealthy diamond merchant, Pannalal Johri [Dalip Tahil], is his father, who had cheated his mother.
When an over-excited Akhil breaks this news to his pal [Krushna Abhishek], the duo also get to know, through a news channel, about Pannalal Johri’s sudden demise in Bangkok. Akhil rushes to Bangkok to stake claim on his fathe’s fortune. However, Akhil gets a shock when the lawyer [Johny Lever] informs him that his father has bequeathed his fortune to his dog — Entertainment. What happens next?
Sajid-Farhad have been an integral part of Rohit Shetty’s movies and unsurprisingly, Rohit’s influence shows in their very first outing as well. Much like Rohit or for that matter, David Dhawan and Anees Bazmee, who have focused on providing ample laughs and amusement in those 3 hours, Sajid-Farhad too throw logic out of the window, focus only on tickling your funny bone and offer unabashed, over the top humor.
Sajid-Farhad also integrate the man-animal relationship smartly in the narrative and create episodes that are ludicrous, but comical. One doesn’t mind absurdities or irrational situations as long as you have a good laugh and Sajid-Farhad make sure the humor is never in short supply. Much like their predecessors, Sajid-Farhad’s first attempt is akin to your fav fast food that may be low on nutrition [sensible, path-breaking stuff], but your taste buds relish it and you savor it till it lasts.
The writing is stuffed with uproarious episodes and a couple of them are indeed side-splitting. The sequences between Akshay and Krushna Abhishek [at the commencement of the film] or the antics between Akshay and the pet do bring a smile on your face and at times, makes you break into guffaws. Really, if you need to de-stress yourself, ENTERTAINMENT — with all its bizarre, outrageous and wacky jokes and superb one-liners — serves the purpose.
However, you cannot disregard the loose ends. The humor quotient goes downhill as the comic villains [Prakash Raj and Sonu Sood] surface slightly before the intermission. The gags and funny episodes, all of a sudden, take a back seat towards the second hour and though Sajid-Farhad do make an attempt to pack hilarious occurrences, you aren’t amused really. Furthermore, a number of sequences in the post-interval portions are stretched for no reason, with a couple of jokes appearing forced in the scheme of things. Nonetheless, the pace gains momentum yet again towards the penultimate stages.
The soundtrack boasts of two popular tracks — ‘Johnny Johnny’ and ‘Veerey Di Wedding Hain’ — which are already a rage with listeners. ‘Teri Mahima Aprampaar’ is another tuneful composition that has been filmed skillfully. The DoP imparts a rich texture to the visuals and the eye-catching locales of Thailand aid him in his endeavor.
Akshay returns to the comfort zone [comedies] and expectedly, is charismatic, charming and vibrant. His faultless comic timing coupled with the enthusiasm with which he goes through his part is worthy of immense praise. Tamannaah is endearing and though she’s paired with Akshay for the first time, they compliment each other wonderfully well.
The supporting cast also adds to the madness. Mithun Chakraborty is in fine form yet again. It’s a sheer joy to watch Prakash Raj and Sonu Sood step out of villainous roles and have fun with comic characters. Johny Lever is top notch, evoking ample laughter on varied occasions. Krushna Abhishek is simply outstanding. His comic timing is impeccable and his one-liners are howlarious.
Dalip Tahil, Darshan Jariwala and Vrajesh Hirjee are okay. Riteish Deshmukh, Shreyas Talpade and Remo D’Souza appear in cameos. The pet, a Golden Retriever named Junior, is simply adorable.
On the whole, ENTERTAINMENT is a joy ride that lives up to its title. Go, laugh out loud and get entertained!

Online shopping surge

Yantragyan
Things have changed widely now. Earlier the very people who were circumspect of buying goods online are the ones who have now become the vigilantes of online shopping and are now encouraging others to do the same. Now Flipkart , Amazon, Ebay have become mundane names in every household which marks the beginning of a very new era, the era of online shopping to which you all are highly welcomed. Hence there is the need to inform you regarding online shopping.
To begin with we have Flipkart and Myntra. Recently Flipkart bought online Fashion store Myntra. Flipkart-Myntra is actively considering acquiring some online and offline private labels. It plans to spend about $100 million in the coming year. Their combined effort might also place them in a better position to take on the likes of Amazon, which has become increasingly aggressive in India’s booming e-tailing market. .. With Amazon.in going strong ,it has made Indian stores’ life difficult and myntra buyout by flipkart was also the amazon effect as some say. This deal was influenced by two large common shareholders: Tiger Global and Accel Partners.Flipkart and Myntra did not disclose the details of the deal, but analysts estimate that Myntra has been valued at about Rs 2,000 crore ($330 million)
Snapdeal, promoted by New Delhi-based Jasper Infotech Pvt. Ltd, started in 2010 as a daily deals platform, selling coupons to groups of customers (similar to the Groupon model), but converted to a marketplace in late 2011-first offering services and then adding a wide range of products including apparel, books and electronics through third-party merchants.
The Indian e-commerce market was worth $13 billion in 2013, with online travel accounting for over 70 percent of consumer e-commerce transactions. Online sales of retail goods totalled $1.6 billion in 2013, according to research firm Forrester, and are expected to reach $76 billion by 2021, according to Technopak. By comparison, China’s business and consumer e-commerce sales may surpass $180 billion this year, with industry leader Alibaba readying an initial public offering (IPO) worth more than $15 billion.
Hang on, even our Jammu is not far behind. The first online grocery store of Jammu is launching soon Karyanawala.com (don’t be deceived by the name, its’ going to be really awesome) .This is the first attempt by any Jammuite to enter online market. People of Jammu can now sit back at comforts of their homes and buy items without going anywhere. Do visit facebook page of Karyanawala to show your support, it is highly needed.

Turning obstacles into opportunities

Ashok Sharma
Life is a mixture of joys and sorrows.Every person, rich and poor, old and young, is confronted by troubles and obstacles at one stage or the other during the period of his life.As we face problems such as failure in examination or business, loss of job, unemployment, serious illness etc, we have a tendency to feel that it is the worst possible thing that could have happened to us and we are doomed for ever.Consequently, our stress levels go very high and we fail to find a way out.We become so tense and nervous that we forget that where there is a problem, there is a solution.Instead of focussing our attention on the problem and viewing it as a challange and blessing in disguise, our mind is riddled with thoughts such as ‘what shall I do now’or’I don’t know what to do and how to get out of this situation’.It is time that we need to change our attitude towards the problem and develop the feeling that ‘I can do it’ and I’ll do it’.It is better to think over the problem in a cool and relaxed manner and tackle the problem as a challange in the light of our existing resources, circumstances and abilities
History bears testimony to the fact that many great people have achieved greatness and eminence inspite of their physical and other disabilities.Charles Lamb, who is known as ‘king of essayists’ spent the days of his early in utter penury.Hellen Keller was blind, yet she found life beautiful and enjoyable.John Milton composed his best works when he had lost his eye sight.Albert Einstein was considered as a subnormal child in his childhood and his teacher said that being a slow learner,he could learn little.Charles Darwin, who wrote ‘Origin of the Species’, was, infact, handicapped and he admitted that had he not been handicapped, his abilities couldnot have been come to the fore.Christy Brown, who suffered from cerebral palsy and declared incurably imbecile by the doctors, learnt to write with his left hand and wrote his famous autobiography ‘My Left Foot’ which was a huge success and which has been translated into many languages of the world.Based on this book, a film was made, which won five Oscars.
The life history of Abraham Lincoln, the famous president of America, is too well known to require any mention here. These and many other legends have demonstrated that obstacles and unfavourable circumstances stand nowhere and if a person is the master of indomitable willpower, he can overcome all these impediments and achieve success.Had these persons faced no problems and obstacles, perhaps, they would never have achieved so much name and fame in their respective spheres
Obstacles and problems are an integral part of our life and we should accept them as opportunities and take them as challanges.Where there is a rose, there is always a thorn. The obstacles need to be viewed as positive motivators to help us build up our capcity and tackle them successfully so that we become stronger and quicker to encounter another obstacle if a new one comes our way.Obstacles, in fact, provide us an opportunity to make use of our latent and dormant abilities and thus enhance our capacity to face the problem bravely. In this dual world, where there is life, there is death;problems and solutions coexist.Even a story cannot be beautiful and interesting if there is only love and no conflict. If there is only protagonist and no villain in a film, few people will watch it and it certainly can’t be categrized as a great film.’Our sweetest thoughts are those which tell us of our saddest tales’, so says P.B.Shelley, the great poet.So problems and obstacles shall always come our way till we are alive but it is our attitude and response towards a problem, which determines how much impact they will have on our life.
In order to find solution to the problem and overcome the obstacles, we must ponder over the problem in a relaxed and cool manner and find out ways and means to turn this problem into a challange in the light of our inner and outer resources. We need to take this challange as an opportunity to better ourselves and enhance our capacity. If such a transformation takes place in our mind, something miraculous will happen and this newly acquired feeling will act as a catalyst to transfer our problem into a blessing.
Our confidence and energy level increases and we are in a position to pool all our mental and spiritual energy to find out the solution. It must be remembered that as long as there is life, there will be problems. We cannot change the events of our life we can certainly change our perspective and attitude in order to control our circumstances instead of being controlled by them.We should accept life as it comes and also the fact that it is made up of good times but also struggles and adversity. We must not just keep brooding over the problem and pass sleepless nights, invite medical problems and frustration but consider problems as opportunities to reinvent ourselves and face them stoically and bravely. It will help in bringing out what is best in us and enhance our capacity to face them in a better way in future.
