Provincial President NC, Devender Singh Rana addressing a public meeting at Nagrota on Saturday.

NAGROTA, Mar 21: Provincial President National Conference Devender Singh Rana today said that inherent contradictions between PDP and BJP were impacting governance in a sensitive State like Jammu and Kashmir, which he observed had potential to impede development, disturb peace and retard growth.
“It is a unique dispensation which despite being in coalition is playing the role of opposition as well by taking opposite stand on issues concerning the state”, Mr Rana said while addressing several public meetings at Majeen, Dhoke Wazira and Chak in Nagrota constituency this afternoon.
He said that false promises made during electioneering and heightened pitch raised over various contentious issues were haunting both the coalition partners which force them to play to the galleries. In this context, he referred to the claims being made by PDP over Armed Forces Special Powers Act and the response being given by the BJP while taking to streets.
“What sort of a combination it is”, he asked and said the people were confused over the drama being enacted by the two parties. He said people want development, peace and a conducive atmosphere for smooth economic activities, especially during the ensuing tourism season and instead the coalition partners are feeding them with rhetoric. “Before elections and post elections, the two parties were attempting to polarize the situation, as they had no concrete agenda for steering the state to development and progress”, he maintained.
The Provincial President expressed apprehension about present dispensation vitiating the peaceful atmosphere generated by the previous Government by braving odds and warned that any such attempt will meet stiff public resistance. He said the people can’t be divided on religious or regional basis anymore, as amity and unity has been the real strength of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh.
Mr Rana said realization was fast dawning on the people about the real agenda of the two parties which played, and are in fact continuing to play, a fixed match, first to usurp the power by deceit and now to carry it on despite contradictions. He said National Conference will fight tooth and nail the negative agenda of the two parties.
He said the religion or caste based politics was fraught with the danger of fragmenting society into bits and pieces. “In such a scenario, we are duty bound as committed soldiers of National Conference to sustain and bequeath the treasure of amity and brotherhood to posterity, as they have to face the fast changing world with a sense of confidence”, he said and urged the people to get ready for meeting this challenge with fortitude.
Prominent among those present during these public meetings included Sarpanch Raman Wazir, Panchs Kuldeep Singh, Kanta Devi, Jamait Ali, Ravi Kumar, Chairman Abdul Hamid, Naib Sarpanch Shiv Dayal, Ms Suman, Ravi Baru, Raj Baru, Sham Lal, Anayat Ali, Rocky, Babu Ram, Sohan Singh, Zorawar Singh and Mohammed Sultan.

Guptill hits record 237 as New Zealand sail into semis

Wellington, Mar 21:

Martin Guptill today bludgeoned his way to the record books with the highest individual World Cup knock as New Zealand rode on the opener’s swashbuckling unbeaten 237 to crush West Indies by 143 runs and sail into the semifinals of the mega event here.
Batting first in the fourth quarterfinal game, New Zealand notched up an imposing 393 for six, then bowled out West Indies for 250 in 30.3 overs to set up a blockbuster last-four clash with an in-form South Africa at Auckland on March 24.
For the record, this was heaviest defeat suffered by any team in terms of runs in the knockout rounds of World Cup.
Guptill scored his runs off 163 balls, becoming the first New Zealander to post a double century in ODIs and the fifth in the world. He was unbeaten when the innings ended.
As he smacked Andre Russell to get to the coveted landmark, Chris Gayle, the only other double centurion in World Cup, came and congratulated Guptill at the Westpac stadium.
Reaching his 100 off 111, the last 52 balls brought Guptill a staggering 137 runs.
He smashed 24 fours and 11 sixes after New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum opted to bat.
Such was Guptill’s onslaught that the hosts reached from 300 to 350 in just 16 balls. The batsman got to his double ton off 152 balls with the help of 21 fours and eight sixes.
Earlier luck was on Guptill’s side as Marlon Samuels couldn’t hold on to a low chance at short-leg in the third ball of the innings bowled by Jerome Taylor. He was on 4 at that time.
There was, however, no looking back after that reprieve as Guptill anchored the innings with the others playing around him with a mix of caution and aggression.
While skipper Brendon McCullum, the dangerman in the Kiwi line-up, perished early, Guptill held the innings together and added 62 runs for the second wicket with Kane Williamson (33).
After getting his eye in, Williamson was lured into going for a false shot by Andre Russell’s slower delivery, bringing in Taylor to the crease.
While the West Indies captain Jason Holder tried different bowling options, the two experienced Kiwi batsmen looked at ease milking runs during a third-wicket partnership that yielded the Black Caps 143 runs in 22.3 overs.(PTI)
