Operation Sindoor A Benchmark For Modern Warfare: Rajnath Singh

NEW DELHI, May 7:  As India marked the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday hailed the mission as a benchmark for modern warfare, citing its unmatched precision and seamless tri-services synergy
The operation stands as a powerful symbol of national resolve and preparedness to deal with national security challenges, he said in a message.
In response to the Pahalgam terror attack, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 last year carrying out airstrikes on nine terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir eliminating at least 100 terrorists.
“On the anniversary of Operation Sindoor, we salute the valour and sacrifices of our armed forces, whose courage and dedication continue to safeguard the nation,” Singh said.
“Their actions during the operation reflected unmatched precision, seamless jointness and deep synergy across services, setting a benchmark for modern military operations,” he said.
The defence minister said the operation stands as a “powerful symbol of national resolve and preparedness, showing that our armed forces are always ready to act decisively when it matters most.”
“It also stands testament to India’s steady advance towards achieving #Atmanirbharta, enhancing capability while reinforcing resilience,” he said.
Singh will carry out a comprehensive review of India’s national security challenges and the military’s combat readiness at a joint commanders’ conference in Jaipur on Thursday.
The conference will provide a pivotal forum to evaluate the challenges in emerging domains of cyber, space and cognitive warfare and chart a roadmap for capability development for resilient and future ready force with a decisive edge, the Defence Ministry said. (PTI)

Low accumulation of abdominal fat in midlife linked with slow brain atrophy, study finds

NEW DELHI, May 6: An analysis of MRI scans shows that a lower accumulation of abdominal fat in midlife is associated with a significant slowing of brain atrophy (shrinkage), preservation of key brain structures, and better cognitive performance in late midlife — independent of weight loss.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the brain and abdomen were analysed of 533 women and men in late midlife, who were followed for up to 16 years. During this period, participants underwent repeated MRI measurements of visceral fat and brain structures, along with their cognitive assessment.
The findings, published in the journal Nature Communications, suggest that the relationship between abdominal fat and brain aging is likely brought about primarily through glucose control and insulin sensitivity.
Researchers, including those from the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva in Israel and Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health in the US, said the study is the first to link repeated MRI-based measurements of cumulative visceral fat with long-term trajectories of brain aging and cognition. Lead researcher Iris Shai, from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, said, “The findings point to glucose control and reduction of visceral abdominal fat as measurable, modifiable, and achievable targets in midlife — with real potential to slow brain degeneration and reduce the risk of cognitive decline.” In a subgroup of participants, three brain MRI scans were taken over five years, analysis of which showed that persistently elevated levels of visceral fat over time were associated with a faster rate of brain volume loss, particularly in the hippocampus (brain’s memory centre), and with accelerated enlargement of the brain ventricles.
The links were not observed for subcutaneous fat, either superficial or deep, nor for body mass index (BMI), highlighting the biological specificity of visceral fat, the researchers said. The study “suggests that sustained visceral fat loss, rather than weight loss, is linked to better cognition and attenuation of brain atrophy years later, mainly via improved glycemic control”.
“Improved glycemic control parameters, rather than lipid or inflammatory markers, were mostly related to the favourable longitudinal brain outcomes,” the authors wrote.
Reductions in visceral (abdominal) fat during an 18-month dietary intervention predicted a better preservation of brain structures five and 10 years later, even after accounting for weight loss and other factors. In other words, the reduction in abdominal fat itself — rather than weight loss per se — was the factor predicting long-term brain outcomes, the researchers said.
The association between visceral fat and brain aging was found to be mediated primarily through glycaemic balance. Fasting glucose and HbA1c levels were the only markers that predicted the rate of structural brain change over time, whereas blood lipid markers or inflammatory markers did not show a similar association.
The findings support the hypothesis that insulin resistance and chronic dysregulation of glucose metabolism impair cerebral perfusion, compromise blood-brain barrier integrity and accelerate degeneration of gray matter and the hippocampus, the researchers said. (PTI)

Pakistan not isolated as it was after Mumbai attack: Cong jabs govt on Operation Sindoor anniversary

NEW DELHI, May 7: Taking a swipe at the government, the Congress on Thursday said that in spite of extensive diplomatic outreach by India following Operation Sindoor, Pakistan did not get isolated as it had been after the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, and has come in for praise from the US military establishment.
On the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, the opposition party recalled that the first announcement of the ceasefire that halted the operation unexpectedly was made at 5:37 PM IST on May 10, 2025 by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said, “As we celebrate the first anniversary of the launch of Operation Sindoor and salute the achievements of our armed forces, it would be useful to recall the following: The first announcement of the cease fire that halted Operation Sindoor unexpectedly was made at 5:37 PM IST on May 10 2025 by the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio who claimed that it was intervention by President Trump that had made this possible.”
Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan made a statement in Singapore on May 30, 2025 where he had stated that India had suffered initial losses as a result of tactical errors but that after review and correction, India was able to understand the tactical mistakes and return with precision strikes deep inside Pakistan, demonstrating resilience and adaptability, Ramesh recalled.
On June 10, 2025, in a seminar in Jakarta, the Defence Attache in the Indian embassy in Indonesia acknowledged that India had lost aircraft on May 7, 2025 because of the constraints laid down by its political leadership, he said.
“The Deputy Chief of Army Staff Lt. General Rahul Singh made a statement on July 4 2025 that had drawn pointed attention to China’s very deep role in Pakistan’s response to Operation Sindoor providing – in addition to critical equipment and ammunition – live inputs including satellite imagery and realtime targeting support, he said. “Yet, the Modi Government’s calibrated capitulation to China continues unabated, including the loss of traditional patrolling rights in Ladakh, record Chinese imports, relaxation of FDI norms, etc.,” Ramesh alleged.
“In spite of extensive diplomatic outreach by India, Pakistan did not get isolated as it had been following the Mumbai terror attack in November 2008. On the contrary, its army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir has been embraced with extraordinary warmth by President Trump from June 2025 onwards and the world’s leading sponsor of cross-border terrorism, namely Pakistan, has come in for praise from the US military establishment,” the Congress leader said.
It also bears recall that just a few days after the Kargil War ended in July 1999, the Vajpayee government had set up a four-member Kargil Review Committee chaired by the country’s strategic affairs guru K. Subrahmanyam, the father of the External Affairs Minister, to examine the sequence of events and recommendations for the future, Ramesh pointed out.
It submitted its report titled “From Surprise to Reckoning” on January 7, 2000. The report was tabled in Parliament on February 23, 2000, he said. In response to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 last year, carrying out airstrikes on nine terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
The action triggered a rapid escalation in tensions with Pakistan launching retaliatory strikes, though most of them were thwarted by the Indian military. The hostilities ended with an understanding on halting the military actions on May 10 following talks over the hotline between army officials of the two sides. (Agencies)

LG Sinha Pays Tribute To Armed Forces On First Anniversary Of Operation Sindoor

SRINAGAR, May 7: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday said that Operation Sindoor was a declaration that India’s brave armed forces will protect the sovereignty and integrity of the country at any cost.
The LG paid tributes to armed forces on the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, which was launched to target terror infrastructure in Pakistan following the Pahalgam attack on tourists in April last year.
“Operation Sindoor is a declaration etched in resolve that our brave armed forces are committed to protect country’s sovereignty & integrity at any cost. It is testament of India’s firm resolve and we are committed to dismantling the terror network and securing a terror-free J&K,” Sinha said in a post on X.
“As we mark the anniversary of #OperationSindoor, we bow in reverence to the men and women in uniform whose unwavering resolve and extraordinary courage, delivered a fitting response to the enemy who targeted innocent civilians at Pahalgam,” he added.

Operation Sindoor: Home Minister Salutes Unparalleled Valour Of Country’s Arm Forces

NEW DELHI, May 7: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday said that Operation Sindoor stands as an “epochal mission” of India that will always remind the country’s enemies of the infallible striking power of the armed forces.
In a message X on the first anniversary of the Operation, he said history will remember it as the day of precise striking power of the armed forces, meticulous intelligence of the country’s agencies, and resolute political will rising together as one to destroy each and every address of terror across the border that dared to cast an evil shadow on citizens at Pahalgam.
“This day will continue to bring the dreadful message to our enemies that no matter where they hide, they cannot escape. They are always within our sight and the fierce wrath of our firepower. On this day, I salute the unparalleled valour of our forces,” he said.

PM Modi Changes DP Of His Social Media Handles Marking 1 Year Of Op Sindoor; Asks All To Follow Suit

New Delhi, May 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday changed the display pictures on his social media handles to mark the one year of the Operation Sindoor, which started this day a year ago, and asked everyone to do the same as a mark of respect to the armed forces and their success.
The profile picture of Modi on his handles on X, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp channel have been changed to an image with the text ‘Operation Sindoor’ on a black background. The picture has a tricolour, with one of the ‘O’s of ‘SINDOOR’ filled with vermilion or sindoor — a symbol of married Hindu women.
In a post on X, the prime minister said a year ago, during Operation Sindoor, the Indian armed forces showcased their valour and gave a firm response to those who attacked our people and every Indian is proud of the country’s armed forces.
“As a mark of respect to our forces and their success during #OperationSindoor, let us all change our display pictures on social media, including X, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp to the picture shared below,” he said referring to the image he uploaded on his social media handles.

Bengal: Tension Grips Parts Of North 24 Parganas After Murder Of Suvendu’s Aide, Security Tightened

Kolkata, May 7: Tension prevailed in parts of West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district and the police stepped up security deployment in the region on Thursday morning, a day after BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s close aide was shot dead, a senior officer said.
Additional police forces were deployed in Madhyamgram, Doharia and adjoining localities after BJP supporters staged protests, demanding the immediate arrest of the assailants.
Senior police officers, however, appealed to the people to maintain peace.
“We are keeping strict vigil in sensitive pockets, and additional forces have been deployed. People should not pay heed to rumours,” a senior West Bengal Police officer told PTI.
Adhikari’s close aide Chandranath Rath was shot dead in North 24 Parganas district on Wednesday night in what the BJP described as a “targeted assassination”, triggering outrage, protests and fresh allegations of political violence.
According to preliminary information, Rath was intercepted near Doltala in Madhyamgram around 10.30 pm by motorcycle-borne assailants who tailed his vehicle, forced it to stop and opened fire before fleeing.
“We want the arrest of killers. Rath, travelling in a vehicle linked to the leader of the opposition, was shot dead. This is nothing but a planned murder. People are frightened,” a local BJP worker said.
Another party supporter alleged that “criminals are operating fearlessly” and demanded a probe by a central agency.
District police officials said raids were underway in multiple locations and CCTV footage from nearby areas was being examined to identify the assailants.
“No one will be spared. The investigation is progressing on priority,” the police officer said.
Two days after the declaration of the fiercely fought assembly poll results, the killing sent shockwaves through Bengal’s political circles, with the BJP accusing the TMC of unleashing retaliatory violence and the latter countering with allegations of attacks on its own workers across several districts.
