Amid Koh-i-Noor remark, NYC Mayor Mamdani facing criticism over ‘rude’ welcome to King Charles III

NEW  YORK, May 1: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing criticism for extending a “rude” welcome to King Charles III and for failing to “set aside his obsession with colonialism” when he called for the Koh-i-Noor diamond to be returned.
Just hours before he met King Charles III and Queen Camilla on Wednesday at the 9/11 Memorial in Manhattan, Mamdani had said he would encourage the British monarch to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond.
When asked at a press conference what he would say to the king when he met him at the World Trade Center memorial, Mamdani had said that he would be attending a wreath-laying alongside a number of other elected officials, including New York State Governor Kathy Hochul and New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill.
“And the focus of that wreath-laying is to honour the more than 3,000 New Yorkers who were killed in the horrific terror attacks of September 11. And that’s what I’m really looking to do at that event.”
When pressed further on what he would say to the British monarch, Mamdani had said, “If I was to speak to the king separately from that, I would probably encourage him to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond.”
In stinging criticism, The New York Post Editorial Board called out Mamdani’s “rude” welcome extended to King Charles.
“Of course Zohran Mamdani couldn’t manage a decent welcome for the king of England: That would’ve required maturity, grace and humility that our mayor just doesn’t have,” the editorial said.
It said “Mamdani did the absolute minimum” to welcome King Charles III to New York when the monarchs visited the city Wednesday, adding that the mayor agreed “belatedly” to “just one brief meeting with the monarch, at the 9/11 Memorial – though the royal visited several sites across town.
“Showing respect for the king is showing respect for Britain, yet Mamdani couldn’t resist showing disrespect,” the editorial said as it cited previous occasions when members of the British Royal Family were warmly welcomed by NYC mayors, including a “ticker-tape parade” organised in honour of Queen Elizabeth’s arrival in the city in 1957 by then Mayor Robert Wagner.
“But Mamdani couldn’t bother with any such gestures; he couldn’t even set aside his obsession with colonialism, telling reporters he hoped to push Charles ‘to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond’, a 105-carat gem originally from India and now on display at the Tower of London,” the editorial said.
“Mamdani’s inexperience is no excuse for letting his personal passions blind him to the duties of his high office,” the editorial said, calling out his “addiction to performative displays”.
“At best, his youth means there’s a chance he’ll learn from his graceless mistakes, and do a bit better the next time he’s called to represent all the people of New York City,” the editorial added.
Another article in the New York Post said that Mamdani had acted “like a petulant teen” in front of the king and queen.
On Mamdani’s comment about the Koh-i-Noor diamond, the article said that the king’s wish to honour the victims of the 9/11 terror attack “was not an opportunity for a freshman barb on colonialism, and to imply that this crown jewel belongs to India”.
“Anyway, what is Mamdani’s standing to demand the diamond – has he appointed himself a representative of India’s government? It wasn’t just the mayor’s rudeness, but his tone and demeanour. Mamdani did his best version of a petulant teen betraying intolerable boredom,” the NY Post article added.
King Charles and Queen Camilla visited the 9/11 Memorial in the city and paid their respects to the victims of the terror attack.
They also visited Harlem Grown, a network of urban farms supporting children and families in Upper Manhattan.
Mamdani had met King Charles at the 9/11 memorial. A video of their interaction on social media showed the two men greeting each other briefly as King Charles meets other New York officials, including Kochul.
A report in the New York Post had quoted a City Hall spokesperson as saying that Mamdani and Charles “exchanged pleasantries” when they met at the 9/11 memorial. Mamdani had left the event after an hour, the report said.
The 105.6-carat Koh-i-Noor diamond was given to Queen Victoria in 1849 by Maharajah Duleep Singh. It was worn by the Queen Mother on her crown in 1937.
India has indicated previously that it will continue to explore ways to bring back the Koh-i-noor from the United Kingdom.
The Koh-i-Noor diamond is currently displayed at the Tower of London. The diamond, set within the Crown of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, has “many previous owners, including Mughal Emperors, Shahs of Iran, Emirs of Afghanistan, and Sikh Maharajas”, according to the Historic Royal Palaces charity. Noida International Airport to start commercial flights from Jun 15

NOIDA, May 1 : Noida International Airport (NIA) on Friday announced that it will begin commercial flight operations from June 15, marking a key milestone in the long-awaited greenfield aviation project in Uttar Pradesh.
IndiGo will operate the first passenger flight from the airport, followed shortly by Akasa Air and Air India Express, according to a statement issued by the airport operator.
The commencement of operations comes after its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the receipt of approval for the Aerodrome Security Programme (ASP) from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security.
The approval confirms that the airport’s security framework, systems and operational procedures comply with regulatory requirements ahead of the start of commercial services.
Further details on flight schedules, destinations and passenger facilities will be announced in due course, the statement said.
Airport’s nodal officer for the UP government Shailendra Bhatia told PTI that once domestic operations begin, cargo services will also start after some time.
“Thereafter, international flights are also expected to get finalised around Diwali this year, and by that time, domestic flights and cargo services would get streamlined,” the officer told PTI.
Developed to cater to the growing demand for air travel in the National Capital Region and western Uttar Pradesh, the airport has been designed with modern terminal infrastructure, efficient operations and multimodal connectivity, the statement said.
The airport aims to ensure a seamless passenger experience while providing airlines with cost-efficient and reliable operational facilities.
The launch of commercial operations would significantly boost regional connectivity and support economic growth, trade, tourism and investment in the broader region, according to officials.
Noida International Airport (IATA code: DXN) will connect the greater Delhi region and western Uttar Pradesh to major domestic and international destinations. The facility currently includes one runway and one passenger terminal with an annual capacity of 12 million passengers.
According to its long-term master plan, the airport is likely to scale up its capacity to handle over 70 million passengers annually in phases over the concession period.
Describing it as a “world-class airport”, the statement said the facility blends Swiss efficiency with Indian hospitality and will offer a wide range of passenger services and commercial amenities.
NIA also reiterated its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions, supported by sustainable design principles and environmentally responsible operations. (PTI)

Authorities silent spectators, traffic jams all over

Nawshaba Iqbal

Srinagar, May 1: Unauthorized taxi stands galore on Srinagar Bypass at major junctions and on the entrances of two leading hospitals of Kashmir leading to traffic jams at multiple places even as the authorities claim decongesting of Srinagar city.
Around two dozen unauthorized taxi stands operate from both sides of the highway at Shalteng, Parimpora, Bemina, Mominabad, Hyderpora, Sanat Nagar, Nowgam and Pantha Chowk crossing and main entrances of SKIMS Hospital Bemina and Children’s Hospital Bemina.
These stands affect the seamless mobility on the 14.5 kilometer corridor as dozens of these vehicles line up on the bypass at each of these stands and block the traffic leading traffic jams.
Commuters told Excelsior that traffic snarls intensify during peak hours, especially around school timings and the evening and morning rush, as taxis occupy road space meant for the traffic.
“There is no official taxi stand at many of these locations, yet vehicles continue to gather,” a local resident said they park along the roadside and wait for passengers, blocking movement despite repeated interventions.”
Traffic authorities acknowledged the issue, saying enforcement drives are being carried out daily but have had limited long-term impact.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic City) Aijaz Ahmad said 10 to 20 vehicles are seized every day during such drives.
“We conduct regular enforcement at multiple points and remove these vehicles, but they return again,” he told Excelsior.
He attributed the persistence of the problem to a demand-supply gap, noting that many commuters, particularly from rural areas, prefer vehicles like Sumos and Taveras due to quicker connectivity and shorter waiting times.
“This demand leads to clustering of vehicles at certain points, affecting traffic flow and posing management challenges,” he said, adding that a structured policy with a proper permit system is needed to regulate such services.
Drivers, however, blamed the absence of designated taxi stands for the situation. Mohammad Akbar Bhat, a Sumo driver, said many operators have taken loans of up to Rs 10 lakh to purchase vehicles.
“If there is no proper stand, where should we go?” he said, adding that drivers were earlier operating from Batamaloo and Tengpora but were asked to vacate those locations.
“We are left with no option but to stand on the roadside,” he said.
Commuters said the issue requires a balanced approach that ensures smoother traffic flow while addressing the concerns of drivers dependent on the sector.

Chinese court sentences 14-year-old boy to life for rape, murder of classmate

BEIJING, May 1: A 14-year-old boy in China has been sentenced to life for the rape and murder of his female classmate.
The student surnamed Jiang, hailing from Majie town, Luoping county in Qujing confined his 15-year-old classmate for a night in July last year, and resorted to violence in an attempt to rape.
Fearing that his crime would be exposed afterwards, he strangled her to death, the Intermediate People’s Court of Qujing, Southwest China’s Yunnan Province said in its judgement pronounced earlier this week, official media reported on Friday.
The court held that the defendant’s acts constituted the crimes of rape and intentional homicide, which necessitated combined punishment for multiple offences.
Given the exceptionally heinous circumstances of the crime and severe consequences inflicted, the offender shall be severely punished in accordance with the law.
As Jiang was under the age of 18 when committing the crimes, the death penalty is not applicable to him, the court said.
According to a previous report from The Beijing News, upon legal review and verification by the Qujing Municipal People’s Procuratorate, Jiang was detained on suspicion of intentional homicide on July 8, and formally arrested by Luoping public security bureau on suspicion of rape on July 22, read the report. HORSENS (DENMARK), May 1: Lakshya Sen saved two match points to beat world No. 6 Chou Tien Chen, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty added a gritty doubles win, before Ayush Shetty delivered the final blow as India registered a commanding 3-0 victory over Chinese Taipei to storm into the semifinals of the Thomas Cup Finals on Friday.
Lakshya, who kept on trailing for the better part of the contest, showed remarkable resilience to script an 18-21, 22-20, 21-17 victory in a marathon clash lasting one hour and 28 minutes.
World No. 4 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, the Asian Games champions, then defeated Chiu Hsiang Chieh and Wang Chi-Lin 23-21 19-21 21-12 in an hour and 15 minutes to put India in a commanding position.
The onus then shifted to Ayush Shetty, and the youngster delivered.
The 20-year-old, who recently reached the final of the Badminton Asia Championships, produced a breathtaking display, blending disciplined defence with attacking flair to notch up a 21-16, 21-17 win over world No. 8 and reigning All England Open Badminton Championships champion Lin Chun-Yi in the second singles to seal the contest. “This is not just a win to celebrate-it’s a performance to remember. One that reflects belief, preparation, and the growing strength of Indian badminton,” former India coach Vimal Kumar said.
India, the 2022 champions, will face either France or Japan in the semifinals.
The victory also assured India a medal in the prestigious Thomas Cup Finals, regarded as the World Men’s Team Championships.
India had won the Thomas Cup in 2022, besides winning bronze medals in 1952, 1955, and 1979. “”The team has every reason to be proud. And perhaps more importantly, this is the kind of victory that builds belief for what lies ahead,” Vimal added.
With the head-to-head locked at 4-4 prior to this contest, the two engaged in another absorbing duel marked by long rallies, precise stroke-play and intense momentum swings.
Chou displayed his experience in the opening game, recovering from 10-15 down and overturning a late deficit to take the lead.
Lakshya, however, responded under pressure in the second game. Trailing 13-17, the Indian reeled off four straight points to draw level. Chou earned two match points, but Lakshya held his nerve, saving both before closing out the game to force a decider.
The 36-year-old Chou appeared to fade physically in the third game as Lakshya seized control with an 11-7 lead at the interval and maintained his composure to seal the contest.
Satwik and Chirag struggled early, with multiple service fault calls disrupting their rhythm as they trailed 8-13 after being level at 5-5.
The Taiwanese kept their lifts flat and fast, forcing Chirag to vary angles and take pace off the rallies, but Chiu and Wang maintained control at 18-15.
Satwik and Chirag, however, refused to concede. They clawed back to 18-19 before a sharp body smash handed the Taiwanese two game points.

Court declares mosque built on graveyard land illegal in Sambhal

SAMBHAL  (UP), May 1:  A tehsildar court has declared illegal a mosque constructed on graveyard land in a village here, officials said on Friday.
A revenue team led by Tehsildar Dhirendra Kumar Singh visited Kaserua village under Nakhasa police station area and demarcated the land following complaints by villagers.
According to officials, the tehsildar court has already passed eviction orders against the mosque committee, which has filed an appeal before the district magistrate’s court.
“The court has passed an eviction order. The committee has filed an appeal before the district magistrate, and further action will be taken after the appellate court’s decision,” Singh said.
The tehsildar said the mosque was constructed on approximately 1,100-1,200 square metres of graveyard land.
“Constructing a mosque on graveyard land is not only illegal but also inappropriate from a religious perspective,” he said.
Officials said according to revenue records, the plot where the mosque is situated is designated as graveyard land. Singh told reporters that villagers approached the district magistrate, claimed the village lacked graveyard land, and sought its protection.
“During record verification, it was found that the graveyard land had been encroached upon and a mosque constructed on it. Action under Section 67 was initiated in this regard,” he said.
Singh said the mosque committee participated in the proceedings but failed to produce evidence proving the structure was built on its own land.
He said notices have been issued to those who have built houses on village community land. “If they remove the encroachments voluntarily, it will be better; otherwise, further action will be taken and penalties imposed,” he said. (PTI)

EU-Mercosur trade deal takes provisional effect, boosting hopes and concerns for millions

SAO PAULO, May 1 : The long-awaited trade deal between South American bloc Mercosur and the European Union took effect Friday, at least provisionally. The initiative creates a trans-Atlantic market estimated at USD 22 trillion with 720 million potential consumers, and some nations expect to boost their exports by more than 10 per cent by 2038, once it is fully implemented.
The trade deal was signed January 17 at a meeting of the South American group. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s move to provisionally enact the deal, effectively sidestepping the EU Parliament, is being challenged by EU lawmakers at the bloc’s judiciary. The agreement will be halted if the European body rules against it.
“This is good news for EU businesses of all sizes, good news for our consumers and good news for our farmers, who will gain valuable new export opportunities, with full protection for sensitive sectors,” she said Thursday.
Von der Leyen is expected to hold a videoconference on Friday with leaders of Mercosur nations Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay to celebrate the agreement.
Earlier this week, Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, one of the key supporters of the agreement, signed a decree validating the deal in his country. He said it is a response to unilateral tariffs imposed last year by US President Donald Trump and a reaffirmation of multilateralism.
“Nothing better than believing in the exercise of democracy, in multilateralism, and in cordial relations between nations,” Lula said in a ceremony in the capital, Brasilia, to celebrate the milestone after more than 25 years of negotiations.
Last week, Brazil’s vice president and one of the negotiators of the deal, Geraldo Alckmin, said in an interview with The Associated Press and other news agencies that not striking the deal with the EU would have meant staying behind while competitor nations made other agreements.
Brazil is by far Mercosur’s largest economy, with a gross domestic product estimated at over USD 2.3 trillion in 2025.
Lia Valls, an associate researcher at the think-tank Fundacao Getulio Vargas based in Rio de Janeiro, agrees that the deal offers better perspectives against unilateralism worldwide.
“The EU and Mercosur are showing that it is possible for big blocs to reach a deal in this world where that multilateral system is being very weakened and where the US clearly operates to do that,” Valls told the AP. “It is a very positive sign.”
The agreement faced opposition from European farmers and environmental groups and was delayed in December, before being referred to the EU’s top court.
South American agribusiness industries, chiefly beef, fruit and minerals, are expecting a boost in exports to Europe. European automakers, pharmaceutical companies and technology firms also look forward to making new inroads in Mercosur markets.
While companies based in Mercosur countries have expressed fear of tough competition from European peers in high-tech industries, European farmers have shown concerns about price pressures and imports that do not follow similar environmental standards.
French President Emmanuel Macron, one of the critics of the deal, has long demanded safeguards to monitor and stop large economic disruption in the EU, increased regulations in the Mercosur nations like pesticide restrictions, and more inspections of imports at EU ports.
The agreement gradually removes trade barriers and tariffs in the two blocs, but it also keeps economic safeguard clauses for European countries to protect some sectors from excessive competition, such as poultry, beef, sugar, and fruit. (AP)

Bukhari urges Centre to initiate reciprocal CBMs

Excelsior Correspondent

SRINAGAR, May 1: Apni Party president, Altaf Bukhari has urged the Central Government to come up with reciprocal Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) to strengthen the prevailing peace and normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir.
He said people have played a vital role in ensuring and sustaining a peaceful environment in Jammu and Kashmir, and now it is the responsibility of the Government of India to come up with reciprocal CBMs to support this ongoing peace and normalcy here.
“How long will our leaders and youth remain jailed? All the detainees except those who are facing charges for heinous crimes, must be freed,” he said while addressing a workers’ convention at Gulzarpora in Rawalpora, Srinagar today.
He also called for an end to arbitrary arrests and the indiscriminate filing of FIRs.
Taking a dig at traditional political parties, Bukhari said these parties have consistently deceived people with lies, false promises, and emotional slogans. He also blamed the public for allowing these parties to exploit them repeatedly.
Bukhari said, “Despite knowing that these political parties have been deceiving you time and again, and that they return every election with false promises to seek your votes, why do you continue to let them exploit you?”
“This ruling party made numerous promises during its election campaign. What has happened to those promises? Where are the one lakh jobs they pledged to provide soon after forming the government? Why have they not fulfilled their promise to regularise daily wagers? Where is the free electricity? Where is enhanced ration quota? Where are free gas cylinders, and the other benefits they assured they would deliver?”
Reiterating his view about the unjust reservation system, Bukhari said, “This unjust system has to go, and it must go. How long will 70 percent of the population receive only a 30 percent share of jobs? This is highly unjust,” he asserted.
Senior leaders- Muntazir Mohiudin, Mohd Ashraf, Bilal Ahmad Bhat, Shiraza Malik, Dr Bilal Ahmad, Sheikh Nissar, Shoaib Dar and many others were also present on the occasion.

According to the Crime Branch, the accused allegedly duped several residents of Pulwama by collecting large sums of money on the promise of securing Government jobs for their children and relatives.
The investigation revealed that the accused were acting in criminal conspiracy and posed as influential officials to gain the trust of victims, the agency said.
They allegedly issued forged appointment orders purportedly from the Forest Department, which were later found to be fake.
Payments were reportedly taken in cash under the pretext of facilitating “backdoor entry” into Government service, the statement said.
