Election Trends: Saffron Rise In East With BJP Set To Bag Prized WB And Assam, Vijay’s TVK Smashes Through TN

KOLKATA/CHENNAI, May 4: The BJP was forging a possible victory path in West Bengal with leads in 109 seats against the ruling TMC’s 63 and surging ahead in Assam while actor-politician Vijay’s TVK was set for a stunning debut in Tamil Nadu, ahead in 103 seats, leaving the ruling DMK in number three position, according to trends on the Election Commission website.
As votes were counted for assembly elections in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry, the east seemed set to be coloured a vivid saffron. In Kerala, the fading bastion of the Left, the Congress was ahead in 61 seats, the CPM in 29 and the CPI in nine.
The cynosure of Election 2026 has been West Bengal, the state ruled by the Mamata Banerjee-led party that has long eluded the BJP and is now within its grasp. It was a volatile election campaign with issues of SIR, electoral rigging and polarisation dominating the discourse.
More than 2.5 lakh personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), along with state police, have been deployed, with the TMC and BJP engaging in a showdown outside several strongrooms, where EVMs were stored, in the runup to the counting.
If the BJP was seeking a historic breakthrough, the TMC was fighting hard to retain power for a fourth consecutive term.
“The BJP will form the government,” said a confident Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari who is is seeking a re-election from Nandigram and taking on Banerjee in Bhabanipur. Asked about his own prospects, Adhikari said, “Jeetenge. Achhe se jeetenge (I will win handsomely).” The Trinamool Congress leadership was more circumspect, preferring to wait and watch.
The writing may be on the wall, said pollsters. If the trends hold out, it could be all but over for the tough talking Mamata Banerjee and another victory for Brand Modi.
In Assam, where too the election was a hot-headed process, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led the BJP to another straight victory with leads in 74 of the 126 seats, leaving the Congress far behind in 23.
If West Bengal is one headline of Election 2026, the other is superstar Vijay, who defied the odds and the taint of a stampede during his rally in September 2025 in which more than 40 people were killed. That was clearly in the past as his party was poised to become the single largest party in Tamil Nadu with leads in 103 of the state’s 234 seats.
The AIADMK was ahead in 67 seats and the ruling DMK in 38. The choice, it appeared, was clear. Vijay could well join the pantheon of MGR and Jayalalithaa as the stars who made it big in the political firmament.
Kerala offered some consolation for the Congress, long fighting diminishing electoral returns. In the southern state, the Congress-led UDF had taken a massive lead, indicating that it could return to claim power.
Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief Sunny Joseph said it indicates a pro-UDF trend in the state and expressed confidence that the UDF will reach the 100-seat mark in the 140-strong assembly.
In Puducherry, the Congress and the BJP were tied at leads in two seats each and the All India NR Congress ahead in seven of the 30 seats for which trends were available. (Agencies)

Bengal Polls: BJP Leads In 111 Seats, TMC In 69; Mamata Ahead In Bhabanipur

Election officials during vote tabulation at a counting centre on the day of Assembly election results, in Kolkata

Kolkata, May 4: The BJP gained early lead in West Bengal on Monday, surging ahead in 111 Assembly seats against the TMC’s 69 as counting gathered pace, signalling a possible outcome that could reshape the state’s political landscape following a high-stakes and tightly fought electoral battle.
The early numbers suggest a geographically split mandate in the making with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) pushing ahead in border, tribal and industrial regions, while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) holds ground in parts of Kolkata and select rural strongholds.
Counting for all 293 Assembly seats began at 8 am with postal ballots, followed by EVM votes. The election is widely seen as a referendum on Banerjee’s bid for a fourth consecutive term against an aggressive BJP that has sought to convert its 2021 gains into a decisive breakthrough.
According to Election Commission data. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was leading in her Bhabanipur stronghold by 898 votes over BJP challenger Suvendu Adhikari after the first round, offering early comfort to the ruling party in a prestige seat even as the broader trend favoured the saffron party.
However, in Nandigram — the other marquee battleground — television channels showed Adhikari ahead by over 3,100 votes against TMC’s Pabitra Kar after the first round, though the Election Commission was yet to upload official figures.
“Out of the 14 booths counted in the first round, five were Muslimdominated. Even there, the TMC is struggling,” Adhikari claimed, asserting that the BJP was headed for a victory and was leading in over 135 of the 293 seats.
Aam Janata Unnayan Party chief Humayun Kabir was leading in the Nowda seat in Murshidabad district over his nearest TMC rival after the first round of counting, Election Commission figures confirmed. Kabir held a lead margin of 2890 votes over TMC’s Sahina Momtaz Khan, with 19 counting rounds remaining.
The Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM), an ally of the TMC in the Darjeeling hills, was leading in Kalimpong, underlining the regional dynamics in the hills where alliances often play a decisive role. Among other key constituencies, BJP candidate Lakshmi Kanta Sau was leading in Jhargram by 976 votes over TMC’s Mongal Saren.
In Kolkata, BJP’s Purnima Chakraborty was ahead by 283 votes over TMC minister Shashi Panja, signalling early cracks in some urban pockets for the ruling party. In Monteswar, BJP’s Saikat Panja was leading by a substantial margin of 3,486 votes over TMC’s Siddiqullah Chowdhury, while in Asansol Dakshin, BJP leader Agnimitra Paul was ahead by 6,271 votes.
The BJP was also leading in a swath of constituencies, including Dinhata, Gosaba, Baghmundi, Bankura, Durgapur Purba, Binpur, Nayagram, Rajganj and Bhagwangola, indicating early traction across Junglemahal, north Bengal and industrial belts. In contrast, the TMC retained leads in pockets such as Deganga, where Anisur Rahaman Bidesh was ahead by 2,184 votes, besides urban seats like Kasba, Ballygunge, Bhabanipur and Entally, and rural belts including Singur, Raina, Jamalpur, Khandaghosh, Sitai, Malatipur and Mothabari. Officials cautioned that trends could shift significantly as more rounds are counted, with clearer patterns expected only later in the day. (Agencies)

Pro-Pakistan Slogans Raised In Bareilly Market In U.P., Six Detained; Hunt On For Other Accused

Bareilly (UP), May 4: Six people have been detained here after overnight raids for allegedly raising pro-Pakistan slogans in a busy market here that prompted shopkeepers to partially down shutters and triggered panic in the area, officials said on Monday.
An FIR has been lodged against over four dozen people in connection with the incident that took place on Sunday and the main accused is Kashif, son of former corporator Tahseen, who is allegedly associated with Maulana Tauqeer Raza’s Ittehad-e-Millat Council (IMC).
Raza has been lodged in jail since September 27 last year, a day after violent clashes erupted in Bareilly on September 26 following controversy over an “I Love Mohammad” poster.
Police said Sunday’s incident was captured on CCTV cameras, and around 14 accused have been identified so far.
Based on the complaint, an FIR has been registered against two named accused and several unidentified persons under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Cantonment police station inspector Sanjay Dheer said six accused, including two minors, have been detained following overnight raids at multiple locations.
Police said that after registering the FIR, a raid was conducted at Kasif’s residence, but he was found absconding.
According to a complaint filed by a local resident, Vikas, he was standing near a computer shop around 12:20 pm on Sunday when a group of youths on motorcycles, carrying cricket bats, passed through the lane raising slogans.
When he objected, they allegedly abused him, assaulted him and issued death threats, police said.
Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Manush Pareek said police have been put on alert in the Cantonment area. (PTI)

PM Modi To Visit BJP Headquarters This Evening After Poll Results; Likely To Address Party Workers

NEW DELHI, May 4: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the BJP headquarters here on Monday evening, as trends indicated a win for the party in West Bengal and Assam.
The prime minister is also expected to address party workers at the BJP headquarters as has been the case during previous election victories.
“Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji will visit BJP HQ, New Delhi today at 6 PM,” BJP chief spokesperson Anil Baluni said in a post on X.
Besides West Bengal and Assam, the NDA is also likely to retain power in Puducherry.
The BJP was forging a possible victory path in West Bengal with leads in 178 seats against the ruling TMC’s 92 and surging ahead in Assam while actorpolitician Vijay’s TVK was set for a stunning debut in Tamil Nadu, ahead in 105 seats, leaving the ruling DMK in number three position, according to trends on the Election Commission website.
As votes were counted for assembly elections in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry, the east seemed set to be coloured a vivid saffron.
In Kerala, the fading bastion of the Left, the Congress was ahead in 59 seats, the CPM in 29 and the CPI in nine. (Agencies)

Op Sindoor Showed India’s Technological Warfare Capability; Forces Must Remain Proactive: Rajnath Singh

Union Minister for Defence, Rajnath Singh, addresses the gathering during the inaugural ceremony of the North Tech Symposium in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

Prayagraj, May 4: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said Operation Sindoor was a “specimen of technological warfare,” pointing out the use of advanced systems and the armed forces’ readiness to adapt to evolving battle conditions.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the North Tech Symposium in Prayagraj, Singh said the operation showcased the integration of cutting-edge platforms such as the Akash missile system and BrahMos, along with other modern equipment.
“Operation Sindoor was itself a specimen of technological warfare. In this operation, along with advanced missile systems like AkashTeer, Akash missile system, and BrahMos, numerous latest equipment were also utilized. It proved that our armed forces are not only understanding the changes but are also employing them with confidence,” Singh said.
He stressed the need for constant preparedness in an unpredictable security environment.
“I have always told one thing to my armed forces and Defence experts, and I want to reiterate it again today that we must not only remain active, but also proactive. We must also remain prepared for every kind of situation,” he said.
Highlighting the armed forces’ capability, Singh said Operation Sindoor reflected their preparedness and adaptability. “Our forces and our industries have analyzed the changing circumstances very well. Your people’s preparation always remains up to date, up to mark, and up to standard. And as the biggest example of this, Operation Sindoor is right before us,” he said.
Recalling the operation a year later, the Defence Minister praised the forces’ response to terrorism.
“One year has passed since this Operation. Whenever Operation Sindoor is mentioned, I am reminded of the valor of my armed forces. The terrorists and their patrons received such a resounding response from our soldiers that the entire nation’s head is held high with pride. It was still good that, by showing restraint, we only neutralized the terrorists–otherwise, the world already knows what our armed forces are capable of,” Singh said.
He also underlined the changing nature of warfare, noting the rise of unconventional threats.
“If we look at the unpredictability of the war system, then in earlier times, at least we had a rough idea of what the opposing side could do. Its military capability, its platforms, its doctrine–we had an estimate of all these. But now, a surprise element keeps emerging continuously, one that could never have been imagined before. Things that we considered part of ordinary civilian life are now turning into lethal weapons,” he said.
The Defence Minister also linked infrastructure development to national security, citing projects such as the Ganga Expressway.
“The infra projects that we are starting will also prove to be assets for us in the future. Like, right now, Uttar Pradesh’s longest expressway, the Ganga Expressway, has been launched. All these infrastructure projects are equally important for our Defence sector,” he said.
He highlighted government initiatives to strengthen the defence ecosystem, including iDEX, ADITI, and Technology Development Fund.
“Under the leadership of the Prime Minister, our government has taken numerous steps to strengthen our defence ecosystem. You all are well familiar with those initiatives. Be it i-DEX, ADITI, or TDF, through all these efforts, we have sought to boost innovation in the Defence sector and increase participation from the private sector to the maximum extent possible,” Singh said.
He added that infrastructure projects such as the Defence Corridor and the BrahMos assembly facility are enhancing India’s capabilities.
Singh also noted growing global recognition of Indian defence industries.
“I feel great pleasure in saying that discussions about our industries now take place across the world. Whenever I travel anywhere abroad, I get to see a positive approach towards our industries in the world. Our industries have undertaken a long journey for this, have gained credibility, and are continuously working hard in this direction,” he said.
On defence research, he said, “25 per cent of the Defence R&D budget has been allocated for industry, academia, and start-ups; and so far, more than approximately ₹4,500 crore has also been utilized by all of them.”
He added that the Defence Research and Development Organisation has opened access to its patents and testing facilities to support industry. “DRDO has also launched a policy to provide free access even to its patents for Indian industries, which will strengthen both their technological capability and global competitiveness. DRDO’s test facilities have now also been opened to industries on a payment basis. Hundreds of industries use these every year and receive R&D support,” Singh said.
Future wars would be won in laboratories, he said, stressing the importance of research.”In today’s time, there is no alternative to Research. The way wars will be fought in the future is being decided in today’s labs. I am pleased to say that the government has placed defence research at the center of its priorities. Through DRDO, we have made efforts to take research to the next level. And importantly, DRDO is no longer walking this journey alone. With the mantra ‘If you want to go far, go together’, DRDO is now moving forward with a large number of industries alongside,” he said.
The Defence Minister inaugurated the North Tech Symposium themed “Raksha Triveni Sangam – Where Technology, Industry & Soldiering Converge”.
The three-day event, jointly organised by the Indian Army’s Northern and Central Commands and the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers, will see participation from 284 companies showcasing indigenous defence technologies. (AGENCIES)

‘Darbar Move’: Civil Secretariat Reopens In Srinagar

Pic: Shakeel/Excelsior

SRINAGAR, May 4: The Civil Secretariat, the seat of the Jammu and Kashmir government, reopened here on Monday as part of the bi-annual 150-year-old ‘Darbar Move’ practice, officials said.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour as offices reopened in the summer capital, a week after closing in Jammu.
“The Darbar Move, which was resumed last year at Jammu, marks a renewed continuity of governance in Jammu and Kashmir, with the full Secretariat shifting to the summer capital after several years,” the office of chief minister posted on official X handle.
Under the practice of ‘Darbar Move’, the government functions in Jammu during the six winter months and in Srinagar during the summer. The practice was started by Maharaja Gulab Singh in 1872 to escape extreme weather conditions in the two regions.
The practice continued even after Independence to provide governance benefits to both Kashmir and Jammu regions for six months.
The shifting of capitals was stopped during the Lt Governor’s rule in 2021, but was restored by Omar Abdullah in 2025, a year after he assumed office. Ahead of the Darbar Move, Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, got a facelift with sprucing up of roads and walkways.
Roads with potholes were repaired and given a fresh coat of paint ahead of the shifting of the Civil Secretariat and other government offices.

NDA Ahead In 98 Seats In Assam, Cong In 25: EC

GUWAHATI, May 4: The ruling NDA was leading in 98 seats in Assam while the Congress was ahead in 25 constituencies, according to the Election Commission.
The EC has released trends for all 126 constituencies in the state, with the BJP leading in 78 while its alliance partners, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF) were ahead in 10 seats each.
The Congress was leading in 25 seats, and its ally Raijor Dal in one seat, according to the EC.
The AIUDF was also leading in two seats, and the CPI(M) in one constituency. AJP’s Lurinjyoti Gogoi, who was earlier leading, is now trailing behind BJP’s Chakradhar Gogoi in Khowang constituency.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was leading in Jalukbari constituency while state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi was trailing behind his BJP rival Hitendranath Goswami in Jorhat.
NDA’s alliance partner AGP’s president Atul Bora and working president Keshab Mahanta, both ministers in Sarma’s cabinet, were leading in Bokakhat and Kaliabor, respectively.
Former senior Congress leaders Pradyut Bordoloi and Bhupen Borah, who joined the BJP ahead of the polls, were leading in Dispur and Bihpuria constituencies, respectively.
Ministers Ranoj Pegu, Pijush Hazarika, Ashok Singhal, Prashanta Phukan and Bimal Borah have also established leads in their respective constituencies of Dhemaji, Jagiroad, Dhekiajuli, Dibrugarh and Tingkhong.
The counting of votes began at 8 am, with postal ballots being taken up first. Counting is being held at 40 centres across all 35 districts, with most districts having a single centre covering all constituencies.
However, in Nagaon district, counting is being conducted at three separate centres, while Kokrajhar, Tinsukia and Jorhat have two centres each.
Polling in all 126 assembly constituencies in the state was held in a single phase on April 9 with a record 85.96 per cent of the 2.5 crore voters having exercised their franchise. (Agencies)

Bengal Polls: BJP Leading In 24 Seats, TMC In 5 As Counting Of Votes Progresses

Kolkata, May 4: The BJP was leading in 24 Assembly seats while its rival TMC was ahead in five seats in early trends shown on the Election Commission website on Monday as counting of votes progressed across West Bengal.
The Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM), an ally of the TMC in the Darjeeling hills, was leading in two constituencies — Kalimpong and Darjeeling.
Initial trends reported by regional TV networks claimed BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was leading in the Nandigram assembly constituency by a margin of 3,100 votes after the first round of counting.
Adhikari is taking on TMC’s Pabitra Kar as his primary opponent.
The Election Commission is yet to put out figures for the Nandigram seat on its website.
“Out of the 14 booths where votes were counted in Nandigram in the first round, there were five Muslim-dominated booths. Even in those booths, the TMC is struggling,” Adhikari told reporters in Kolkata.
He asserted that the BJP will form a government in West Bengal.
The leader of the opposition in the outgoing assembly said he was leading in 135 out of the 293 seats where counting of votes is being held.
Among the key seats, BJP candidate Lakshmi Kanta Sau was leading in Jhargram with 5,156 votes, ahead of TMC’s Mongal Saren, who secured 4,180 votes, trailing by 976 votes.
In Kolkata, BJP’s Purnima Chakraborty was leading by 283 votes over TMC candidate and minister Shashi Panja. In Monteswar, BJP’s Saikat Panja was ahead of the TMC’s Siddiqullah Chowdhury by a margin of 3,486 votes in early rounds.
From Asansol Dakshin, BJP leader Agnimitra Paul was leading by 6,271 votes over her TMC rival.
The saffron party was also leading in several other constituencies, including Dinhata, Gosaba, Baghmundi, Bankura, Durgapur Purba, Binpur, Nayagram, Rajganj and Bhagwangola, indicating early gains across regions.
In contrast, Deganga’s TMC candidate Anisur Rahaman Bidesh was leading by 2,184 votes over his BJP rival.
The ruling party was also ahead in Kasba and Entally constituencies in Kolkata and Singur in Hooghly.
In Kalimpong, BGPM candidate Ruden Sada Lepcha was leading by 457 votes over the BJP’s Bharat Kumar Chetri. The party was also ahead in Darjeeling, underlining its influence in the hills.
The counting of votes for the state’s 293 Assembly constituencies began at 8 am, with postal ballots taken up first in keeping with Election Commission norms, followed by the counting of EVM votes.
The high-stakes election is being seen as a crucial test for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party’s bid for a fourth consecutive term, amid a stiff challenge mounted by the BJP.
Officials said trends are likely to change as more rounds of counting are completed, with clearer patterns expected to emerge later in the day.

KOLKATA, May 4: No rallies celebrating the victory of candidates will be allowed anywhere in West Bengal on Monday, a senior official of the Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office said.
The official also said the poll panel is looking into complaints that agents of different parties were unable to reach counting centres.
“No rallies celebrating wins of candidates following the announcement of results will be allowed anywhere in the state today,” special observer Subrata Gupta told reporters.
“We are looking into the issue of agents unable to reach their centres. It will be resolved soon,” he said. (Agencies)
