“TU NAHI TERI ULFAT,ABHI TAK DIL MEIN HAI, BUJH CHUKI HAI SHAMMA, ROSHNI ABHI TAK MEHFIL MAIN HAI”
Duggar land has its own brilliant and unique history. It has given birth to academicians, social workers, politicians, singer, actors and leaders of Calibre. One product and prominent amongst them has been Pt. Prem Nath Dogra. This is the tale of towering personality who worked selflessly for cause of the people. He was a friend, a guide and a social worker. During his life time, he was counted amongst the great personalities of Jammu. A personality who shared weal and woes of needy. This was the main aim objective of Pt. PremNathDogra. The feeling of helping and supporting the masses, especially poor was so deepened in his heart and mind that he always loved to face all kind of odds or eventualities for the pleasure of other. He always believed that service to humanity is the service to god. This is the basic reason that the poor masses remember him as their god- father and his name is being taken with great love, respect and honour . He was born in village Smailpur on 24th of October, 1884. He after schooling in a village school, graduated from Foreman college Lahore in 1908. Besides his academics, he was prominent athlete, also won many prizes in sports field. He served the State Govt. after joining as Tehsildar in various capacities and was even given the post of Lent Officer in-charge BhadarwahJagir of Maharaja and later became the WazirWazarat( Deputy Commissioner). He was a very principled person and acted judiciously in dealing with the problems. He was at times accused of not having dealt with many agitators in Srinagar. The vested interests then manipulated for his premature retirement. His retirement was a boon to him as he got ample time to interact with the masses to know the issues and problems. On social side, he founded Hari Jan Sewa Mandal to help the upliftment of Hari-Jan. Dauntingly on march he gave birth to Brahman Mukhya Mandal to help eradicate social evils in Brahman society. Besides he emerged as leading member of Dogra Sadar Sabha, was elected member of Jammu Municipality and remained its Vice- President for a decade till 1949. All this gave him prominence and in 1945 elections, he was elected to assembly (Praja Sabha). He during 1963-64, was the Sangh-chaalak at RSS for J&K. The then Prime Minister of J&K Sheikh Mohd. Abdullah arrested him in 1949 on concocted blames but Jammuites agitation forced his release. All efforts of the then government failed to help Sheikh Mohd. Abdullah to dominate and detain Pt. Dogra.Pt. Dogra was now elected president of J&K Praja Parishad (1950-1964), then he got himself relieved from there. He was staunch believer of democracy in real sense and fought for uniformity all around the country under the slogan “EK NISHAN, EK VIDHAN, EK PRADHAN’ and to gave full unquestionable integrity to the country. The agitation to achieve above motives attracted jail for him for nine months.
Though detained in Kashmir, he was elected Member Assembly in 1957, then also in 1962 and 1967 from Jammu City North. He proved to be a great parliamentarian and earned praises of his opponents like the then Chief Minister Gulam Mohd. Bakshi and G. M.Sadiq. He even rose to level to hold the President’s post of All India Jan-Sangh for the year 1955-56. He led the Jan-Sangh group in the Legislative Assembly. To sum up, Pt. Dogra proved to be a true and faithful solider of the soil and everyone is proud of him. In his whole life, Pt. Dogra while serving State Govt. in various capacities, had not taken Government accommodation, Kothi or Quarter, not even a vehicle. This shows his love for simplicity and dedication, who stood for secular values throughout his life. He served the people of the State for a long time in various capacities and always worked for poor and down-trodden sections of society. He was a real friend of people and a man of high stature. Pt. Dogra was an institution in himself whose principles, ideology, concern for Jammu and commitment for full integration of the State with the rest of the Country coupled with his pain for the society, earned him the distinction of being recognized as Sher-e-Duggar. The role of PanditJi in “EK VIDHAN, EK NISHAN, EK PRADHAN ” agitation and similar other demonstrations was splendid which made even the Kashmiri Leaders to respect him as a great Dogra leader .
Pt. PremNathDogra Ji is a symbol of sacrifices and service to the society. He devoted his life for the cause of Mother India and he would be remembered for all times to come. No doubt, PanditJi is not with us, but due to his selfless service for mankind, his name will always live in our hearts. An epitome of humility and resilience, Pt. Dogra went on to become on of the most enduring icons of India.

A tribute to towering personality
“Kashmir would not have been part of India without Sardar Patel’s effort”
Historian-journalist Hindol Sengupta was the guest at An Author’s Afternoon session organised virtually by Prabha Khaitan Foundation. In a conversation with host Oindrilla Dutta, Sengupta spoke about his book The Man Who Saved India and its central character Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Souvik Ghosh brings excerpts
What attracted you to Sardar Patel to make him the subject of your book The Man Who Saved India?
Sardar Patel was a misunderstood figure in India for a long time. All historical events or personalities finally are a byproduct of a story that is told about it. If the stories about them are not told in the right way, then their importance diminishes. In my opinion, one of the problems with Sardar Patel’s legacy is that he had neglected to tell his own story after India’s Independence, unlike Mahatma Gandhi or Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. So his version of the story remained untold until some of the writers took the effort to go through the archive and materials and write about him.
For a long time in India, sovereignty was not very well understood. I feel the geographical sovereignty of India was taken for granted. Reading Sardar Patel really gives us a reality check to that feeling because we understand how hard-earned that sovereignty really is.
Why do you think Sardar Patel kept sacrificing his own interests at the altar of Mahatma Gandhi?
It was because of the Eklavya thing (adoration towards master), he had himself said that. I would argue that Patel had probably given up the seat of the Prime Minister of India as a gurudakshina (paying back) to his guru (here Mahatma Gandhi). The vulnerabilities in stoic persons like Sardar Patel are not absent but deeply hidden. His vulnerability came with Gandhi and Kasturba (Kasturba Gandhi, spouse of Mahatma Gandhi) because, in a sense, the latter two had become the paternal and maternal figures in Sardar Patel’s life.
Sardar Patel also had a very complex relationship with Nehru despite having a few moments of affection. How did that pan out as Gandhi was obviously favouring Nehru?
It was an interesting relationship. It is true that the Patel-Nehru relationship was a very complicated one, and in many cases the two had disagreed very vehemently. Also during the national movement, all three (Sardar Patel, Mahatma Gandhi, and Jawaharlal Nehru) were each other’s company in that journey. No matter how much Nehru and Patel had discomfort, it cannot be denied that because they had spent so much time in each other’s company, it was difficult to erase one from another’s life.
You spent a large part of your book on how Patel had merged the princely states with the rest of India.
Absolutely. I spent a large part of the second half of the book essentially about Kashmir, Hyderabad, China, Northeast India. Clearly Patel and Nehru differed on what to do with Kashmir. Each of the two had taken sides over Kashmir. It is to be remembered that actually Kashmir may not have been a part of India had it not been for Patel’s decision to send in the Indian Air Force at the right time to the Srinagar Airport.
It shouldn’t be forgotten that when a lot of things were happening in the country in the period between 1946-1950, Patel was a dying man but he was crisscrossing the country in very basic aircraft to make this happen. We would not have been able to save Srinagar had it not been for that decision of Sardar Patel to fly in the Air Force.
Also, do you think a lot of problems related to Pakistan and China could have been avoided had we taken the advice of Sardar Patel?
We have ignored so much legacy of Patel regarding the issue of China. I discovered a letter from Patel to Nehru where the latter had said it was not right to close eyes to Chinese people, suspecting them of being spies. Reading those letters in 2020 (when the bilateral relationship between India and China is hostile and volatile) is so eerie. Patel never wanted Article 370 which was drafted without consultation with the Sardar. (IBNS-TWF)

Of Ramleelas in Jammu
Ashok Kumar
In view of Covid_19 pandemic, Ramleela, being telecast live by Door Darshan during Navratris and also on internet on You Tube Channel and other social media sites as ‘Ayoudhya ki Ramlila’,has brought back memories of the days when Ramleela used to be organised and watched with great pomp & show.
The fact that renowned Bollywood actors such as Raza Murad, Bindu Dara Singh, Asrani, Ravi Kishan,Shahbaz Khan, Rakesh Bedi to name a few are enacting the various important characters of Ramayana in ‘Ayoudhya ki Ramlila’,make it worth watching all the more. Lord Rama is reverred as the 7th incarnation of God Vishnu and He is the central character of the Hindu scripture ‘Ramayana’ composed by Maharishi Balmiki. Thus,Ram Lilas, as the name implies, are the venerated art forms performed on the stage to depict the main events of the life of Lord Rama including his birth, marriage, exile, abduction of Ma Sita by Demon King Ravana, sorrow and grief of Lord Rama and Laxman and war with the Demon King Ravana culminating in Ravana’s death. Ramalilas which were declared as one of the ‘intangible cultural heritage for humanity ‘ by UNESCO in 2008, are believed to have started hundreds of years ago in India including the northern India. In our own Jammu region, Ramleela are said to have been performed in Reasi, Basohli, Udhampur, Ramkot, Thial, Dewan Mandir, Jammu and many other parts of Duggar since the 19th or the early twentieth century and have been much popularwith the people converging from distant places to watch Ram lilas at these places, though these were performed in every nook and corner of Jammu region. Established in 1890, Durga Natak Academy, Reasi has been staging Ramleela carrying on the legacy of its founders. Acknowledged at the National level, Ramleela at Basohli dates back to as early as 1911 and it continues to be one of the most famous Ramleela in Jammu region. Thescenes such as glowing of Laxman Rekha, descending of Hanumana carrying the mountain with him etc are meticulously planned and executed. Similarly ,in Udhampur & Garhi, Ram Kala Kendra and Mahavir Youth Kala Kendra respectively did a yeoman’s work in promoting Ramleela, which also produced many artists of eminence. Ramleela at Ramkote dates back to as early as 1931 when Raja Raghunath Singh father of the last king Raja Laxman Singh, started the tradition of performing Ramleelas. While curtains for the Ramleela were brought from Lahore, actors were invited from Jammu to stage Ram Leela. People from far and wide used to converge at Ramkote to watch Ramleela at Ramkote in the nineteen eighties. Ramleela staged by Ram Natak Club, Thial used to be so popular that people from the adjoining villages would trek for miles with torches and burning twigs to watch Ramleela at Thial. The historic Ramleela organised in the premises of Shri Sanatan Dharam Natak Samaj, Dewan Mandir, Jammu is said to have been performed for more than a century and a half and is still very popular with the people. In the same way, Ramleela performed at Jaganoo, Panthal, Bhaddu, Katra & Ramnagar used to attract a large number of people, who, in some cases, would hire buses to travel to long distances to watch Ramleelas.
In the days gone by,as Navratris commenced and time of Ram Lilas came, there used to be a lot of enthusiasm and joy in the people, especially the children. People would finish their domestic chores as early as possible so that they could go to the venueswhere Ramleela used to be performed. At a time when financial condition of most of the people was not so sound, they would carry pine twigs or torches in the dark nights to trek their long way to the venue of Ramleela. In case of venue being near, some of them, especially the children, would carry their mats too with them. Ramleela used to be performed in the open, there being generally only one or two rooms to store the costumes, bows and arrows and other paraphernalia or for the actors to get prepared for the act. The married daughters would come to their paternal homes to watch Ramleela in case there was no Ramleela being staged near their homes. During the Navratris,it was almost like a mela at the place where Ramleela was performed. Some hawkers, especially dealing in eatables and tea had a brisk business. As it took a lot of time for the actors to prepare for the next scene, generally some comic or religious act was performed or some Bhajan recited to sustain the interest of the viewers. Normally,Ramleela would start around 9 PM and end around 12 mid night. Only four or five scenes were displayed in one night after which it was time for the viewers to trek their long way back home in groups with discussion on the performance & role of various characters. A solemn and religious atmosphere would prevail at the venue of Ramleela and the viewers responded enthusiastically with a loud ‘Jai’ as someone from the stage uttered ‘Sri Ram Chander ji ki’. An office bearer of the Ramleela Club would go to each spectator with a thali containing holy jyot and all the people would bow before the jyot and pour some donation in the thali. Viewers would also donate money to the Ramleela Clubs or award money to the actors for their excellent performance.During the day children would make improvised bows and arrows in villages from sticks & twigs and ropes and enact the various characters of Ramleela . The older boys would deliver dialogues between Lord Parshurama & Lakshmana, Angada and Ravana, Ravana and Jatayu and other characters and sang Bhajans sung in Ramleela. With a lot of time at their disposal and in the absence of social media, they would amuse themselves by playing various characters and often memorising the dialogues. The pathetic scenes such as Sita Haran (kidnapping of Sita), Ram Banwaas (Rama’s exile), Bharat Milap (Reunion of Lord Rama with Bharata) etc would bring tears in the eyes of the spectators, especially girls and the women. On the last day, some special scenes would be displayed attracting a large number of audience. On the eve of Dussehra, big effigies of Demon king Ravana, Kumbhkarna and Meghnad were burnt to hive the message that good always triumphs over the evil. In those days, the role of female charcters was performed by men who did their best to convey the real feelings and emotions. The people from all communities cutting across caste, creed, religion and sect would participate in & watch Ramleela. Surprisingly, all this was funded by the local people with no outside help and the actors received no money for performing their role. Largely this performance including the recitation of Bhajans would be based on Ram Chritmanas composed in the 16th century by Tulsidas. The venue used to be overcrowded and people would try to reach earlier to reserve a seat for them. For days together,we,as children, used to be under the spell of Ramleela with delivering dialogues quite often as we played with eachother at home or in the fields while grazing cattle or doing other jobs.Though Ramleela, which used to be a religious, culture and festive event those days, they left an indelible impression on the minds of the viewers, especially the children and consciously or unconconsciouly, the values such as obedience, respect for elders, sacrifice, empathy, high sense of morality etc would be ingrained in them with the result that there were few cases of conflicts, murders, suicides in those days and people would be more tolerant ,empathetic and cooperative. Later, with the help of modern technology, Ramleela used to be performed in a better way making use of lights, sounds and other systems and role of female characters came to be performed by the women.
Then came Ramananda Sagar’s TV serial Ramayana which ushered in a revolution of some sort. The cities & towns wore a deserted look during while the serial was telecast. The young would carry the old on their backs to the houses which had a TV set. There used to be huge rush of people eager to watch Ramayana outside the TV shops. On the auspicious and important days such as birthdays, marriage anniversaries/ceremonies, Mundans etc,the celebrations would invariably end with the playing of the CDs of Ramayana on the hired VCRs/VCPs and in some cases TV sets too. A large number of people from the adjoining villages would coverge to watch Ramayana with the atmosphere turning solemn & religious.
These days, though some people are trying to keep this cultural and religious tradition alive, they are facing acute shortage of funds. People, especially the youth and the children have little time to watch Ramleela as they prefer to remained glued to their mobile phoes/other electronic gadgets rather than watching Ramleela. Generally, it is thought that Ramleela are the shows to be watched by commoners. But the scenes showing triumph of good over evil, dangers of lust, importance of loyality, respectfor elders, fraternal love, sacrifice etc have a great impact on the lives of children and parents should encourage their children to watch Ramleela and actively participate in Vijay Dashmi & Dussehra celebrations to develop in them higher values of life.
Ramleela is being telecast live daily from Laxman Qila,Ayodhya by Door Darshan from 7 PM to 9 PM during Navratris and many famous actors such as Raza Murad, Asrani, Vindu Dara Singh, Manoj Tiwari, Ravi Kishan etc are performing the role of various characters of Ramayana.

IL&FS misses debt resolution target by Rs 7,300 cr in Sep qtr
Mumbai, Oct 24: Debt-laden Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL&FS) Group, which had earlier estimated to address debt of around Rs 8,800 crore in the second quarter of FY21, on Saturday said it has been able to address debt of just around Rs 1,460 crore during the period due to COVID-19 related delays.
The group said the Rs 7,300-crore shortfall in the September target has been rolled over for achievement in subsequent quarters.
The cash-strapped group has, however, maintained its earlier estimates of addressing more than 50 per cent of the overall debt of over Rs 99,000 crore as of October 2018.
“As compared to the previous update, the Rs 7,300-crore shortfall in target for debt addressed by September 2020 is being rolled over for achievement in subsequent quarters,” the group said in a release.
“The delay has been mainly caused on account of significant impact of COVID-19, which has added time and logistical complexities in the process of completing discussions with stakeholders and in obtaining approvals from lenders, regulators and judicial authorities,” it said.
Of the Rs 7,300 crore of shortfall in the target of Q2 FY21, around Rs 4,200 crore of debt will be addressed in Q3 FY21 and Rs 3,100 crore in Q4 FY21, the group said.
In July, the group had estimated to address close to Rs 50,500 crore of its debt by March 2021 and an additional debt of Rs 6,500 crore beyond FY21.
The Uday Kotak-led board had also shared a quarterly estimates of addressing additional debt of Rs 8,800 crore by Q2 FY21; Rs 18,000 crore by Q3 FY21 and over Rs 6,000 crore by the end of Q4 FY21 — aggregating to Rs 50,500 crore by the end of FY2021.
As of June 30, 2020, it had addressed debt of Rs 17,640 crore.
The group, in the release, said by September 2020, an additional debt of around Rs 1,460 crore has been addressed — by way of sale of education business, recovery from non-IL&FS group entities, increase in cash balances and debt repayment in green entities, increasing the overall debt addressed based on cash balances to Rs 19,100 crore.
The group has revised its earlier quarterly estimates for addressing the debt.
Of the earlier debt resolution target of Rs 18,000 crore for Q3 FY21, resolution of Rs 10,000 crore is being moved to be achieved in Q4 FY21.
Besides, the group is also expecting to receive claims from concession authorities/pre-payments and recovery of loans and investment to non-IL&FS group in the third quarter.
“As per revised estimates, Rs 13,200 crore of additional debt is projected to be addressed by December 2020. This includes Rs 8,150 crore resolved through the proposed InvIT for which an ‘in-principle’ approval from SEBI has been received,” the release said.
The number of entities resolved as of September 2020 stands at 173, that is half the original number of 347 entities of the IL&FS Group, the release said.
Elsamex S.A., an IL&FS Group company with 100 step-down subsidiaries, was admitted into insolvency during the September 2020 quarter, thus contributing to the substantial reduction in the number of entities of the IL&FS Group, it said.
On Friday, Punjab and Sind Bank said it has declared IL&FS’s subsidiary IL&FS Financial Services (IFIN) as fraud and also reported it to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) as per regulatory norms.
The bank said IFIN is an NPA account with it and has an outstanding dues of Rs 561.13 crore. (PTI)
