KATHUA, Nov 18: Excise sleuths at Lakhanpur Toll Post foiled yet another bid to smuggle 9210 kgs of polythene carry bags into the State today.
During their routine checking of two vehicles bearing number JK03C-3323 and JK08 C-6366 at the Toll Post which the drivers informed were carrying trade goods and potatoes, the sleuths found that the vehicles were carrying 210 kgs and 900 kgs of polythene carry bags respectively.
The driver of vehicle JK08C-6366 had also disclosed wrong registration number before the Excise sleuths which he had also displaced on number plate while on verification it was found the actual number of vehicle was JK08C-5366.
However the driver fled from the spot leaving his truck behind. Both the vehicles have been seized for compounding fine under J&K Levy of Tolls Act and will be handed over to the Commercial Taxes Department for further action at their end, an Excise Department spokesman said.
He said the operation was conducted under the supervision of Dy Excise Commissioner, Dr Mushtaq Ahmed along with Excise and Taxation officers, Naaem Mugal, Sanjay Bhat, Lekh Raj, Ravi Thakur, V S Billowria and Suresh Kumar. They were assisted Sub Inspectors, he added.
The spokesman termed it a major achievement of Excise staff at Toll Post Lakhanpur since the entry of Polythene carry bags is banned in the State.
