Options Before Iran

The black banners of mourning have been hoisted over the city of Tehran, but beneath the official grief, a different energy is vibrating through the streets. For the first time in nearly four decades, the Islamic Republic is without its “Supreme” guide. Following the devastating events of Saturday morning, now known as Operation Epic Fury, the world is waking up to a fundamentally reset Middle East.
A Century of Defiance: The 47-Year Cold War
The modern conflict is rooted in the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which transformed Iran from a key strategic ally of the United States into its most dedicated revolutionary opponent. For nearly half a century, this was a “Shadow War” defined by ambiguous struggles: the “Tanker War” of the 1980s, the fragile hope of the 2015 JCPOA nuclear agreement, and the 2020 assassination of Qasem Soleimani. Together, these moments told a story of gradual escalation and evolving tension that finally reached its breaking point.
The Breakout Crisis: The “Satan” Doctrine
By early 2025, the shadow war concluded as Tehran moved into a “Breakout” phase. Iran reached a significant milestone by achieving 90% uranium enrichment, bringing it to the threshold of weapons-grade material. This technical advancement was coupled with a hardened military strategy known as the “Satan” Doctrine. Tehran’s posture shifted toward the explicit goal of pushing the “Great Satan” (the USA) out of the Middle East while aiming to neutralize the “Little Satan” (Israel).
The Hammer Falls: Operation Midnight Hammer
The first major kinetic shift occurred in June 2025. In an intense 37-hour mission dubbed Operation Midnight Hammer, American B-2 Spirit stealth bombers equipped with GBU-57 “Bunker Busters” struck Iran’s most hardened nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. While the strikes caused considerable damage to the physical infrastructure, they failed to shake the regime’s ideological commitment. Instead, they fuelled a fierce pivot toward hypersonic missile development and a vow to ‘wipe’ the Satan from the world map”.
The Day the Earth Shook: Operation Epic Fury
Diplomacy in Geneva failed just 48 hours before the final strike. Citing an “imminent nuclear threat,” President Trump authorised what military analysts call the most audacious decapitation strike in modern history. At 8:10 AM local time on February 28, 2026, thirty precision bombs fell on the Pasteur Street compound. Unlike previous strikes that sought the cover of night, “Epic Fury” was a daylight execution, designed, in the words of one official, to “catch the regime while it worked”. The result was the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, ending his 37-year reign. The strike also claimed his daughter, grandchild, and key IRGC leaders.
The emotional fallout is as fractured as the country itself. In the south of the capital, hardline supporters of the IRGC have taken “blood oaths” for revenge, their cries of “Marg bar Amrika” (Death to America) echoing through smoke-filled squares.
However, in the digital shadows and the quiet corners of Isfahan and Shiraz, a different story is emerging. Underground videos show young Iranians, veterans of years of civil unrest, distributing sweets and playing music in secret. “The wall of fear hasn’t just cracked,” said one local resident via an encrypted app. “It has vanished”.
What Comes Next?
As Iran’s military responds with retaliatory strikes against U.S. bases in Bahrain, Qatar, and Kuwait, reports suggest that the “Succession Council” in Tehran is in disarray. The world now closely observes three potential paths for Iran. Firstly, the “Samson Option”: A final, devastating missile attack against Israel and the U.S. Fifth Fleet. Secondly, the Military Junta: A takeover by remaining IRGC generals to restore stability through force. Thirdly, The New Dawn: A rising popular movement that exploits the power vacuum to finally put an end to the 1979 Revolutionary era.
The “Bigger Satan” has struck, and the “Lion” has fallen. But as the smoke clears over the Pasteur District, the question remains: what rises from the rubble? Though for some time, till the arsenal lasts, there will be emotional military attacks on USA bases on land and sea, Israeli cities, GCC countries hosting USA bases, etc.
Possible Option Before Iran now
Iran, as an ancient civilisation, continues to possess intellectually sound voices that have consistently refrained from endorsing radical viewpoints, even if such perspectives led to liberation from detrimental American influence in 1979. The most prudent course of action for Iran is to engage diplomatically and persuade the international community that its ‘Nuclear Program’ will be subject to verifiable oversight by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a United Nations body, and will be exclusively dedicated to peaceful civilian applications. Additionally, Iran should seek the lifting of all sanctions imposed upon it. Furthermore, consideration should be given to Iran’s participation in the ‘Abraham Accord’ in the Middle East. Lastly, Iran ought to pursue greater integration within the global geo-economic framework. Iran can learn from India’s policy of ‘Vasudeva Kutumbakam,’ emphasising global unity and interconnectedness.
