JAMMU, Oct 8: In a special drive targeted to ensure availability of quality drugs to the end users, Drug and Food Control Organization inspected various retail drug stores across Jammu province and disallowed operations of 31 establishments for violation of Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
During the drive, surprise inspections of retail drug outlets were carried out by the empowered staff under the supervision of respective Assistant Drugs Controller in Jammu province under the overall authority of Lotika Khajuria, State Drugs Controller and operations of 31 retail sale establishments were disallowed on the spot under Section 22 (d) of Drugs & Cosmetics Act, 1940.
While operation of six establishments were disallowed in Jammu district, one in Samba district, six in Rajouri, 10 in Udhampur, 2 in Poonch, four in Doda, operation of one each was disallowed in Kishtwar and Poonch district. The reason for suspension ranged from non-maintenance of sales records, impersonation, unhygienic/ insanitary conditions, improper storage conditions, etc. The licensees were warned of severe action in case the deficiencies are not removed within stipulated time.
During the drive, one unlicensed shop was found in operation at Jangle, Garhi in Udhampur district and taking immediate cognizance the inspecting team confiscated the stock of drugs worth Rs 62000 lying in the shop on the spot. The custody permission for the same was obtained from court of CJM Udhampur and the defaulters were booked under law.
Statutory drug samples of more than 100 drug formulations viz antibiotics, PPI, steroid, NSAIDs, etc were also lifted for determination of strength and purity, and referred to Drug Testing Laboratories located within the UT for framing legal opinion to ascertain their quality parameters.
Moreover, stocks of drugs worth Rs 107305 that were declared ‘Not of Standard Quality’ by Government Analyst were also confiscated from the supply chain by the Regulatory Officers of the organization under Section 23 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
The Drug Controller has impressed upon the trade fraternity to improve their overall storage conditions and warned the pharmacies indulging in any unfair/unethical trade practices of initiating severe punitive actions.
