Opposition disrupts LS proceedings over conversions row

NEW DELHI :  The Opposition today disrupted the Lok Sabha proceedings after Speaker Sumitra Mahajan disallowed their notice for adjournment of the Question Hour to discuss the issue of reported conversions allegedly being engineered by some Hindu  organisations.    Members of the Congress, its allies SP, RJD, NCP, the JD(U), the Left parties, All India Trinamool Congress(AITC), Anjuman Ittehadul Muslimeen staged protest in the Well of House shouting slogans against the Modi government and chanting ‘Hindu Muslim Sikh Isai Aapas mein hai bhai, bhai’ and ‘Sare Jahan se Achcha Hindostan Hamara’.    The notice for adjournment motion had been given by Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav of the RJD, K C Venugopal of the Congress and ET Mohammad Basheer of the India Union Muslim League.
Leader of the Congress in the House Malliakarjun Kharge said the matter was very serious and it should be discussed immediately as it was in the interests of the country to protect the secular charter of the polity.
Mulayam Singh Yadav of the SP said the situation was also very grave and might lead to communal disturbance.    Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu said there was no problem to the integrity of the country, and the members should not politicise the issue.    “The government is ready for discussion. What should be done to stop conversion is also the government’s concern, and the House will discuss what to do.”    The Speaker also appealed to the members to go back to their seats promising them she would allow the issue to be raised in Zero Hour.
She moved on with the Zero Hour while the Opposition members continued raising slogans in the well — Modi sarkar jawab do jawab do (Answer Modi government) and ‘Modi sarkar hosh mein aao (Modi government mend your ways).”    Finally, the Speaker announced adjournment of the House for 10 minutes till 1205 hrs.
