JAMMU, Jan 16: Opposition National Conference and Congress members today lodged strong protest with the Chairman Legislative Council, stating that lodging FIR against NC member Showkat Ganai and directions issued by a judge of the court was unfair, unethical and unconstitutional.
When the Chairman Legislative Council, Haji Anayat Ali entered the Upper House and started proceedings, all the opposition members stood up and lodged strong protest and said that the said directive amounts to direct interference of the Judiciary in the working of the Legislature. They said being custodian of the House it was his responsibility to take serious note of the issue and issue appropriate directions to the concerned. It is the question of Sanctity of this House. It was very serious issue and action in issue regard must be taken.
Congress members Ghulam Nabi Monga, Naresh Gupta, Jugal Kishore, NC Members Sajjad Kichloo, Qaiser Lone and Dr Bashir Ahmed Veeri spoke on the issue and appealed the chairman to take serious note and bring privilege motion against the judge and those filling report in the court for seeking FIR against Legislator Showkat Ganai on his remarks. They said it was contemptuous, defamatory and insulting for the Legislature. They deserve appropriate action.
BJP member Vibod Gupta stood and said Member should not have raised such controversial remarks in the House. Upon this there, was heated exchanges between the members of the treasury benches including Yasir Reshi, Vibodh Gupta and Surinder Choudhary and the opposition members.
The Chairman assured that he has taken note of the issue and will take appropriate action. He said that no action will be taken against Member by police and it was within his domain to act. Leader of the House, Minister for Education Naeem Akhtar intervened and said this issue belonged to this House and court has no jurisdiction, Moreover, chairman has already taken cognizance. He suggested members to bring privilege motion in the House for an action in this regard. They disrupted Question Hour for about 13 minutes. On the assurance of Chairman then they took their seats.
