Oppn continues uproar in RS, demands PM reply on conversion row

NEW DELHI :  The Opposition continued its uproar  in the Rajya Sabha for the fourth day today, demanding reply  from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the conversions row,  forcing its adjournment till 1200 hrs.    The House saw heated exchanges between the Treasury benches and the Opposition after Anand Sharma of the Congress charged the government with being arrogant.    Drawing the attention of Deputy Chairman P J Kurien to the suspension of Congress member V Hanumantha Rao from the House yesterday by Chairman Hamid Ansari, Mr Sharma said, “The Minister for Parliamentary Affairs had made a statement that the Congress member used a highly objectionable statement against the Prime Minister.    “The fact is he did not make any remark against the PM. This is a serious issue. The Minister should check the records and apologise to the Congress member.”    He said, “The government is being arrogant. The Prime Minister is not coming to the House to participate in the debate. We want the House to run.”
Refuting the charge by Mr Sharma, Leader of the House Arun Jaitley said, “Let me assure the House that the government has not intention of being arrogant on this issue. We want the House to function. The fact that one House is functioning while the other is being disrupted shows the arrogance of numbers (Opposition).”    On this, Sitaram Yechury of the CPI-M said the other House was functioning because of the ‘tyranny of the  majority’.
On the demands by the Congress, Prof Kurien said he would go through the records to see if any unparliamentary language has been used.
