BARAMULLA, Dec 25: Residents of Baramulla town in North Kashmir have expressed concern over open manholes and uncovered drains in the main market and the colonies here.
Locals said that the uncapped manholes and uncovered drains are posing serious threat to pedestrians, which include thousands of school and college going students.
They said the authorities are not paying any heed to the matter. “The manholes in main market have been closed by placing stones around them. And dozens of manholes are covered with cardboard boxes etc,” they said.
Bashir Ahmad Quraishi, a businessman of Tehsil Road, Baramulla said that the drain is broken at many places and nobody in the Government seems bothered about it.
Ishfaq Ahmad Qazi, President Bepar Mandal Baramulla told Excelsior that despite being the second densely populated city of Kashmir, Baramulla sans proper garbage dumping site too because of which local Municipal Community dumps garbage in open in the bus stand, which also became a reason of chocking of drains.
The inhabitants of Old Town, Kanispora and Sangri said that the MLA has failed to implement proposal for decongestion of the area.
“Government has announced that congested areas would be decongested by developing a residential colony for people,” the locals said.
They said that the proposed Greater Baramulla project has not seen the light of the day. “Rs 11.5 crore are lying unused with DC Baramulla for decongestion of Old Town,” the locals said.
Meanwhile, Municipality officials of Baramulla said they were busy with elections and all developmental works were halted in view of Model Code of Conduct.
