Food is a subject closely connected with the health of a person. On larger scale, the food business operatives in the State have to obtain licenses and registration certificates from the Health and Medical Education Department. To be precise, the Drug and Food Control Organization functioning under the Department of Health and Medical Education is responsible for issuing both the license and the registration card. There are thousands of food business operatives in the State because the CAPD reaches even the farthest nook of the State. The task of issuing licenses and registration certificates was done through manual exercise, which besides being a lengthy procedure, also was prone to delay and corruption. Complaints were regularly received by the officials in this connection.
The Government has now taken a very progressive step in the light of its thinking that there is the need for ensuring that the check of interest of health of the consumers, registration and licensing of operators dealing with food items must be undertaken, alongside strengthening the system for better monitoring and testing. Consumers have to be made sufficiently aware about consuming healthy, safe and wholesome food. It means monitoring the quality of food supplied to the consumers. The important decision taken by the Government in this context is that the Health and Medical Education Department through the Drug and Food Control Organization launched an online system for issuing licenses and registration certificates to food business operators throughout the State. This will reduce the great hassle through which the applicant were required to go through. It will also reduce chances of corruption and mismanagement and at the same time bring about speed in food distribution. We congratulate the Government for this progressive step.
