Onion scam: ACB orders probe; constitutes 5-member team

NEW DELHI, Sept 23:  In a fresh trouble for the Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi, the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) today ordered a probe into the alleged Onion scam.
The ACB constituted a five member team to investigate the alleged irregularities in the purchase of onions.         Talking to media persons here, ACB chief M K Meena said, We have called for an investigation into the onion procurement controversy after receiving complaints in the purchase of onions.
Reacting to the development, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia expressed his readiness to cooperate with the investigation.
ACB is working directly under Modi Government, so they will investigate the supposed Onion scam. We are ready for any probe, he said.
RTI activist Vivek Garg filed a complaint with the ACB on Monday to investigate the alleged onion scam following which the ACB ordered a probe today.
Mr Garg alleged that the Delhi Government hid some information regarding the purchase of onions and did not issue any tender for buying this commodity.
Earlier, he also asked why they have bought them at a higher price from the Small Farmers? Agri-Business Consortium (SFAC) when these were available at a lower price from the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (NAFED).
According to Mr Garg, the government earlier ordered the purchase of 5,000 tonnes of onions and later at June-end it was made 2,511 tonnes which encouraged the hoarders to manipulate the situation. Only 575 tonnes of onions was available in the market whereas the city needs around 1000 to 1500 tonnes of onions daily. (UNI)
