On the horns of dilemma

On the eve of his impending visit to Beijing, Pakistan Foreign Minister Khwaja Asif has pontificated on his country’s terror content and doled out spicy pieces of admonishments to his Government, civil society and maybe indirectly to the Pakistan Army. In recent months he has had to pocket two insults, one from the country to which “Pakistan is more allied than allies” meaning Uncle Sam and more recently and shockingly from the country whom it categorizes as ‘all weather friend’. Asif, after these two reprimands from close friends, donors and political mentors is feeling shaky and in all probability is heading towards exit. Naturally, he must try all out efforts to save his sinking ship. Only China can save him in his post as Pakistan’s foreign minister. Therefore, he has adopted the art of reverse sycophancy which is the reversal of Pakistan’s traditional denial culture. It means instead of refuting or repudiating President Xi’s assertions on Pakistan’s premier terrorist organizations, he has taken recourse to self indictment in the hope that China is not offended and actually vindicated.
Only the naive will take him on his face value. Nothing would be more foolhardy than to believe that Asif means to reprimand home authority for patronizing terror and providing safe havens and logistic support to them to carry out sabotaging activities in a neighbouring State.  The amusing question is this. Will Asif’s self-indictment make President Xi withdraw his remarks and give a clean chit to Pakistan which she hopes at any rate? The problem is that the statement is signed by all the five members of BRICS and not only China. It is an obligation. However, to us in India it should be clear that China will not that easy change its stance at the security council when the question of designating Jaish chief Azhar come up again at its proper time. China can change its stance within the beating of an eyelid as it did in the case of Pakistan at BRICS. We should not expect any relaxation in China’s anti-India stance notwithstanding her vicious assertions.
