SRINAGAR, Apr 30: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Vice-President Omar Abdullah today toured the flood affected areas of Kupwara district and sought adequate compensation for those affected.
Omar was accompanied by party’s Provincial President Nasir Aslam Wani Sogami, senior leaders Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan, Mir Saifullah, Javed Dar, and local party functionaries of the District.
Speaking with the flood affected people at Cello in Sopore, Chogal & Kulangam in Handwara and other hamlets of Kupwara and Sopore Districts, Omar said the administration should learn from previous disasters like the one that happened in 2014 and make adequate arrangements for the people.
Expressing concern over the “unpreparedness” of the administration in dealing with such an eventuality, he said he was surprised that the administration had been sleeping since 2014 feeling such a situation wouldn’t arise again in the future.
Describing the gravity of the situation, Omar said, “There are reports that water has entered several residences, causing heavy loss to the people.”
Seeing the worsening situation in many regions, he said, he halted his political campaign to visit the flood affected areas to know about the grievances and pain of the people.
Omar suggested a comprehensive flood management programme to avoid recurring losses in the flood and other such disasters.
“It (flood management plan) won’t happen overnight, but it needs to be done and we will do so,” he said.
