Sir,
This has reference to the article ‘Of oldies and old age homes’ DE Nov 16.
It is a reality that our senior citizens have become a casuality of capitalist discourse which has no room for them. With every passing day, this section of society feels to have been placed on the margins of social circle. Even legislation has not stopped people from giving a raw deal to them.
Though Viridh Ashrams have cropped at many places and provide shelter to destitutes, these are in no way substitute for homes. The plight of oldies can to some extent be redressed by people if people pay attention to old value system.
However, There are certain other compelling factors which make one find way to an old age home. If conditions are created, old age can turn out to be substitutes. The Government, and NGOs can play an important part in it. The Social Welfare Department can allocate a substantial amount for constructing old age homes with all basic facilities throughout the State.
Yours etc….
