JAMMU, Feb 25: Various OBC organisations held joint protest demonstration under the banner of OBC Adhikar Tiranga Yatra to project the issues of the Other Backward Classes in the JKUT.
The joint protest was held by All J&K OBC Mahasabha, All India Backward Classes Federation JK-Unit, All J&K OBC Welfare Forum Srinagar, Backward Classes Union Rajouri-Poonch, and the presidents of various OBC Communities /Biradaris, to bring to the notice of the Chief Minister of JKUT, the Lieutenant Governor and the Union Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment that the Dedicated Commission constituted by the Government of Jammu & Kashmir on June 11, 2024, named “The Jammu & Kashmir Local Bodies Dedicated Backward Classes Commission”, and the assignment of door-to-door OBC survey to 20 Deputy Commissioners of 20 districts of J&K-UT is merely an eyewash regarding OBC reservation in Panchayats and Municipal Corporations/ Committees for reserving seats for Panchs, Sarpanchs, BDC & DDC Members, and Corporators in Jammu & Srinagar Municipal Corporations and Municipal/ Town Area Committees as per the OBC population in every Panchayat and Urban Local Body.

They alleged that there is no representation in this Dedicated Commission-all its members are non-OBCs. The attitude of eyewash is evident from the news dated Nov 6, 2024, which states that the Commissioner of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) and the Commissioner of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) have submitted their OBC survey reports to the Chairman of the Dedicated Backward Classes Commission. No door to door survey was conducted before making such report.
A similar procedure has been followed by all the Deputy Commissioners and their staff in their respective districts regarding the counting of the OBC population in rural and urban areas of J&K-UT. OBC organizations collectively constituted a 3-Member Monitoring Committee.
This Committee participated in all the public hearings held by the Commission at Chenani in Udhampur, Billawar, Akhnoor, Srinagar, Baramulla and Anantnag.
This Committee submitted its report on Feb 20, 2025 after visiting villages, towns, and wards of Jammu & Srinagar Municipal Corporations. Their findings clearly indicate that the Govt report is total eyewash,
Senior members Kasturi Lal Basotra (Chairman, OBC Mahasabha), Faquir Chand Satia (President, All India Backward Classes Federation), Kewal Fotra (President, All J&K Sain Samaj), Raj Kumar Chalotra, ML Pawar (General secretary, OBC Mahasabha), Manohar Lal Tidyal, Bansi Lal Choudhary (Convener, OBC Adhikar Tiranga Yatra), Mohd Shabir Sambyal (President, Dhobi Welfare Central Committee) and Abdul Qadir also spoke on the occasion.
