JAMMU, Oct 27: National Secular Forum (NSF) today staged a protest demonstration against Jammu University authorities for ignoring the resolutions of University Syndicate as well Council and taking unilateral decision to hire the service of private lawyers.
Addressing the gathering, NSF State president Dr Vikas Sharma alleged that University administration was ignoring the resolutions of competent bodies and instead taking decisions as per the dictates of Vice Chancellor. “The hiring of the service of a private lawyer as Need Based Standing Counsel is clear cut violation of the norms as the person accommodated enjoys proximity with the VC,” he said.
Dr Vikas added that the said lawyer had been hired without following any due procedure as recommended by the 109th University Syndicate vide Item No. 109.61 (e) which states “The Vice Chancellors of both, the University of Jammu and the University of Kashmir will get the name(s) of senior and reputed Advocate(s) out of list which shall be submitted to the ‘ble Chancellor to obtain his approval and thereafter the contract of service will be entered by the concerned University with such Advocate(s) who shall be empanelled from the list so submitted initially for a period of three years, further extendable by another two years.”
Dr Sharma further said that more than 400 cases of the varsity were pending in different courts. “The University has paid a sum of Rs 16.5 lakh towards fee to Standing Counsels which is worth mentioning. The highest amount been paid to one of the Standing Counsels was Rs 12.8 lakh followed by Rs 1.89 lakh, Rs 1. 26 lakh and Rs 42,375 thousand respectively. “It is surprising to know that Varsity was spending such a huge amount of money on defending legal cases; and the number of pending cases is more than 400 which is too big . Varsity authorities must tell the people as to why the institution has been kept entangled in legal issues,” he added.
