No Smoking Day

Sir,
Every year 31st of May is celebrated as No Smoking Day through out the world. In our country nation wide rallies and functions are organised by different organisations including health and other departments to create awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and right of non-smokers to a smoke free environment and harmful effects of passive smoking. Passive smoking is as harmful as active smoking and should be avoided. About four million people including eight lakh Indians die every year of tobacco related diseases in the world.
Mere banning the advertisements  of tobacco and prohibition of smoking in public places and offices is not enough but there should be a multi-pronged strategy to counter the menace. Besides introducing a suitable legislation a vigorous campaign of health education should be launched to make the people aware about the disadvantages of consumption of tobacco.
Yours etc….
