NEW DELHI, Aug 30:
There is no plan to increase the retirement age of Supreme Court Judges, the Government said today.
The Supreme Court Judges retire at the age of 65.
In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Law Minister Salman Khurshid said there was no proposal to increase the retirement age of apex court Judges.
A bill which seeks to increase the retirement age of High Court Judges from 62 to 65 – to bring it at par with the retirement age of SC Judges – is pending in the Lok Sabha since Winter session last year.
The Constitution (114th Amendment) Bill, 2010 was introduced towards the fag end of the Winter Session in December last year.
For passage of a Constitution amendment bill, two-third majority of members present is needed and it should not be less than half the strength of the House.
Recently, Khurshid had said that the bill on retirement age of HC Judges will have to wait as the Government plans to pass it along with other measures related to higher judiciary.
He said while the opposition was not opposed to the measure, they had “differing opinions” on it. (PTI)
