NIA arrests religious leader, 5 others for ISIS links

SRINAGAR, July 11: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) today conducted a series of raids in Srinagar, Anantnag and Baramulla districts and arrested six persons including the head of a religious seminary -Sirajul-Uloom, Adnan Ahmad Nadvi for having alleged links with ISIS.
The NIA team along with Jammu and Kashmir Police and paramilitary CRPF raided a Islamic seminary “Sirajul Uloom” at Dalal Mohalla Nawabazar area of Srinagar and seized some office records and a laptop besides arrested it’s chairman Adnaan Ahmad Nadvi son of Noor Din Bhat of Haka Bazar Hawal. The institution is affiliated with the Islamic seminary in Uttar Pradesh.

They also conducted raid at Achabal in Anantnag in Pushroo, Sunsooma and Achabal villages and arrested five people – Javaid Ahmad Mir, 28, son of Mohammad Shaban Mir of Sunsooma, an MBA qualified presently running a shop at Sunsooma and Umar Bhat son of Nisar Ahmad Bhat of Magray Mohalla Achabal, who runs Ready-made garment shop at Achabal.
The three others who were arrested include Ovais Ahamad Bhat son of Nisar Ahmad Bhat of Magray Mohalla Achabal, Tanveer Ahmad Bhat son of Gull Mohamad Bhat of Gorimohalla, Achabal who runs a shop and Zeeshan Ameen Malik son of Muhammad Ameen Malik of Pushru Nowgam in Achabal who runs shop at Janglatmandi Mandi, Anantnag.
The NIA teams seized electronic gadgets, bank statements and other documents during the raids.
A statement issued by the NIA said that these raids at seven locations were conducted in ISIS Voice of Hind Case.
“The case was registered by NIA on 29.06.2021 under Sections 124A, 153A, &153B of IPC and sections 17, 18, 18B, 38, 39 &40 of UA(P) Act 1967 in connection with the conspiracy of the proscribed terrorist organization ISIS to radicalize and recruit impressionable youth in India to wage violent jihad against the Indian State”, the statement said.
“In order to execute its nefarious plan, an organized campaign has been launched over the cyber space which is supplemented by on ground terror financing activities”, the statement said.
It added that the ISIS operating from various conflict zones along with ISIS cadres in India, by assuming pseudo- online identities, have created a network wherein ISIS related propaganda material is disseminated for radicalizing and recruiting members to the fold of ISIS.
“In this connection an India-Centric online propaganda magazine ‘the Voice of Hind’ (VOH) is published on monthly basis with an aim to incite and radicalize impressionable youth by projecting a skewed narrative of imagined injustices in India to arouse a feeling of alienation and communal hatred”, read the statement.
The NIA said that the searches led to recovery and seizure of a large number of incriminating documents and digital devices such as mobile phones, tablets, laptop, hard disks and T-Shirts having ISIS logo.
