NEW DELHI, Nov 25:
National Human Rights Commission has asked its Director General (Investigation) to collect facts and submit a report within eight weeks on the alleged killing of two Army men in Jammu and Kashmir due to mistaken identity.
The Commission’s direction came on a complaint filed by India Media Centre, Puri in Odisha that two Army personnel were killed and another was injured as an Army team fired at another mistaking it to be militants in central Kashmir’s Budgam district on October 23.
Troops of 53 Rashtriya Rifles set up a vehicle checkpost at Chattergam chowk in Chadoora area of Budgam following an information about movement of militants there.
A team of 35 Rashtriya Rifles men travelling in a civilian vehicle did not stop at the checkpost, causing suspicion among the troops there who opened fire.
Sepoy Ghulam Rasool Sheikh, Naik Setien Tao of 25 Rashtriya Rifles and Territorial Army driver Abdul Rauf were wounded and admitted to the Base Hospital at Badamibagh Army Headquarters where Sheikh and Rauf succumbed to injuries, the complaint alleged.
Akhand of the India Media Centre filed a petition before NHRC alleging negligence on the part of 53 Rastriya Rifles higher officials and human rights violation.
He prayed before the Commission to issue notice to the Defence Ministry to submit a report and order an additional compensation of Rs 5 lakh besides regular compensation by the Army. (PTI)
