NH-1 bottleneck

We regret to say that the National Highway Authority of India is reportedly unable to keep the time schedule of delivering the largest tunnel in the country namely Chenani – Nashri ten kilometer long tunnel on Jammu – Srinagar Highway. This is not the first time that we are mounting attention on the bottleneck that has thwarted delivery of the tunnel in time. It is sad that the NHAI has not been able to resolve the dispute between two agencies which are entrusted with the task of boring and excavation work. It is a sad commentary in the sense that these agencies are little informed on the importance of the project in hand and its implications on the economy and security of the State. These agencies are reported to have sublet the work to a number of contractors and there is total absence of coordination among them. Why this tunneling has become a mess is not explained to the people. The NHAI must explain without loss of time why it has allowed the mess to happen because many questions arise from inordinate delay in bringing the tunneling to completion. It is a prestigious organization and we do not like that aspersions should be cast on it. Let us hope that authorities will be able to give us the final time schedule when the tunnel will be thrown open for traffic on the most crucial link between two regions of the State
