There will be a separate Nuclear Medicine Department in Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu as the State Administrative Council has accorded its approval for it . With this move which was desired for a long time , there will be better cancer care services at the tertiary level. The patients of Jammu Division suffering from this disease are presently bearing the cost, time and botheration of travelling outside the state for undergoing various tests and subsequent treatment which hopefully will be a thing of the past. Besides both the public , usually the attendants with the patients visiting the GMC and associated hospital and the attending staff were feeling the pinch of staff shortage , a step though not a major one, is proposed to be taken in the form of creating of 13 posts of various categories including 5 posts of faculty members , 3 posts of Registrar/ Medical Officer and 5 posts of paramedical staff.
Thanks to Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, for sanctioning two State Cancer Institutes in Jammu and Kashmir , one in SKIMS Soura Srinagar and the other in GMC Jammu under centrally sponsored scheme of National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer , Diabetes, CVD and Stroke . It is pertinent to mention that while SKIMS Soura has already received the first instalment under the scheme amounting to Rs. 47.25 crore for establishment of the SCI, Jammu has yet to start the beginning in it. For that , we share with readers that establishment of a Nuclear Medicine Department was mandatory and only then the funds etc could be released by the Central Government which is now expected to be fairly addressed by establishing of this Department in the GMC of Jammu.
