NEW DELHI : Prime Minister Narendra Modi was today invited by his Nepalese counterpart Sushil Koirala to visit the Himalayan Republic on June 25 to address the first Donors’ Conference being hosted by the Nepalese government in Kathmandu. Mr Koirala who spoke with Mr Modi on telephone this morning, said he had sent his Finance Minister Ram Chandra Mahat to Delhi with a personal invitation for Mr Modi.
Mr Modi, while conveying his best wishes for the Donor’s Conference, thanked Mr Koirala for the invitation and conveyed his willingness to attend if his schedule permitted and assured him that India would, in any case, be represented at a high Ministerial level.
The Donors’ conference is being organised to solicit funds for reconstruction and rehabilitation in view of a massive earthquake which battered Nepal on April 25 causing massive death and destruction.
Despite offers by many countries to host the conference outside Nepal, the Nepalese government decided to hold it in the Kathmandu on June 25.
Mr Modi reiterated India’s unwavering and sustained support to Nepal in his rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts, guided by the preference and priorities of the Nepal government.
He assured Mr Koirala that India would respect and be with Nepal in all its decisions in this regard.
Mr Modi reaffirmed that India had always been guided by humanitarian concerns in a spirit of equality and friendship.
He also congratulated Mr Koirala on the progress in the political process on drafting of the Constitution and conveyed his best wishes for the successful conclusion of the peace process and adoption of a Constitution.
He reiterated that India’s only desire was success, peace and progress for the people of Nepal.
The Nepalese Prime Minister also briefed Mr Modi on the steps his government was taking for rehabilitation and reconstruction in Nepal following the earthquakes in April and May 2015.
Mr Koirala congratulated Mr Modi on a successful visit to Bangladesh, describing it as yet another example of his (Mr Modi’s successful Neighbours First Policy and his commitment to deepen relations with India’s neighbours.
He congratulated Prime Minister Modi on the historic agreements signed in Dhaka and welcomed his support for sub-regional connectivity between Bhutan, Bangladesh, India and Nepal. (AGENCIES)
