Our country has 700 universities (including 48 central universities), 16 IITs, 30 NIITs and around 36,000 degree colleges. Nearly two crore students participate in informal and tertiary education. Yet despite these enormous numbers, international education rating agencies have not placed any of these institutions among the best 200 of the world. This is what the President said at a function to celebrate 100th year of the advent of the Divine Adya Mata organized by Dakshineswar Ramakrishna Sangha Adyapeath. We feel bad at this piece of information. Why even one institute in our country is not among 200 top educational and training institutes of the world? Is it that we are really far behind the top educational institutes of the world? Is it that we have deteriorated in our educational standards? Is it that rating authorities are prejudicial against us? There is something wrong somewhere and we need to find it out. The President was right in pointing out that up to 12th century A.D. India was well known in the world for her scholarship and pursuit of knowledge. Universities of Nalanda and Taxila were famous as great seats of learning and scholars from far and near flocked to these to drink from the fountain of knowledge. Where do we stand today? More painful is that our scholars, scientists, engineers and intellectuals become famous when they migrate to other countries and win laurels for them. Something is wrong with our educational system and we need to introspect and come out with remedies. President’s concerns are well founded and we hope the nation harkens his note of caution.
