SRINAGAR, Oct 1: Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today said that Government is working on a comprehensive construction programme to shift health institutions and schools from rented buildings to State owned accommodation.
“This would help in providing conducive atmosphere in schools for imparting education to the students and upgrading sanitation and other facilities”, he added.
The Chief Minister was speaking at a meeting he had with Chairperson of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) Dr. Shanta Sinha who called on him here this afternoon.
Minister for Social Welfare, Sakina Itoo, Minister of State for Social Welfare, Ajaz Ahmad, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, B. B. Vyas, Commissioner Secretary Social Welfare, Jeet Lal and other senior officers were present in the meeting besides members and officials of NCPCR.
The Chief Minister said that State Government has put in place various measures to protect the rights of children and help their comprehensive development. He said that State Social Welfare Department is running different schemes in the State with Central assistance for the welfare of children, women, destitute and needy.
Omar Abdullah asked the Chairperson to identify areas where the National Commission and the State Government could jointly work for the welfare and upliftment of children with focused attention on physically challenged ones.
The Chairperson NCPCR presented resume of the meetings she had with district administration in Kupwara and Baramulla regarding schemes under implementation for child welfare.
The Commissioner Secretary Social Welfare Department informed the meeting that four composite regional centres are being established in Kupwara, Doda, Udhampur and Anantnag to provide necessary succor to the child development programme in these districts. He said Government has established 29 Bal Ashrams in the State besides two Swadhar Shelter Homes run by Social Welfare Board for orphans. He said Government has also established Rehabilitation Councils for militancy affected children.
